I'm on the fence about selling my '22 KTM 350SXF. Between seeing what local bikes that are like mine are going for, I'll just hold onto it. Dealing with FB marketplace shitheads is hard enough. lol

I legit stopped selling anything because I've had it with the assholes who respond to ads. I'd honestly rather haul stuff to the scrap yard than talk to one more of them.

How many hours?

Edit: I see you answered. I just broke 100hrs on my '23 and figured I wouldn't be able to give it away.

Not a screaming deal but a fair price that should get attention. Hours may scare some away

The "Mecum Effect" is having serious fallout when used bikes are getting priced.  Same as the "Kaplan Effect".  It's all smoke and mirrors.  Almost nothing over $3500 is selling regardless of condition and basket cases that are priced over a grand don't even deserve a call.  All the sellers "know what they got"🙄

20-30 year old two strokes I just figure I'm going to have to do a complete engine rebuild on day one and figure that into the price.  Then throw in all the chassis bearings, tires, and a suspension rebuild.  I've been racing vintage bikes for 30 years, actually since they weren't vintage, and the horrors I've seen in the way people "maintain" their bikes could be made into a Halloween movie.

Well said. Absolute piles of shit for $1800, sellers think they are sitting on gold mines. Or seller powder coats the frame and swingarm black with new...

Well said. Absolute piles of shit for $1800, sellers think they are sitting on gold mines.

Or seller powder coats the frame and swingarm black with new black plastic with new graphics that has their individual number and torn seat but it only needs new reeds to run good and don't tell you about the JB welded center cases that are almost impossible to source now.

I've been scouring marketplace for weeks now.. it's like this over and over.

Lots of interesting bikes in the 3500+ range, but as others have said nobody has disposable income right now and nothing is moving. If I'm dumping that much in a bike it's going to be a brand new one, and not something that I have to pull apart and discover red RTV sealant for gaskets and cheap, improperly installed crank bearings, with worn out shfit forks and transmission gears that are missing teeth. But daang it looks like it rolled off the showroom floor on the outside. I'm 100% going with new at this stage.. can't trust anyone's work now.

I sold my '89 KX125 restoration for 2800 and I scoped out all of the engine components and replaced things that were out of spec per Kawasaki manual. New OEM con rod and bearings.. it looked showroom fresh. I spent about 5000 getting it that way and lost my ass just because I wanted to be fair and give someone a good deal. I was a fool. There's a thrashed 89 KX125 not far from me selling for 2000 right now, and it is a rolling basketcase from the pics.

Can't wait for the 327 to come out. That's all I can think about right now.

I did the same thing with 1989 YZ 250, had well over 5 grand and sold it 2,800. It took about a month to sell.

I put about 6000 in my last project bike an 07 KX250 smoker.

Got a set of probably one of the last available OEM centercases from Kawasaki, new OEM crank assembly too. Same thing, all internal bearings were replaced including the small ones that are a pain to remove with normal pullers. Everything was OEM Kawasaki, except for the Phathead racing cylinder head. Had the forks and shock rebuild by A1 in Atlanta and went a cheaper route on Warp9 wheel sets with the silver rims & blue hubs. I did change from silver to green powdercoat on the frame, and kept oem silver for swingarm.  New blue anodized triple clamps and bearings/races.  Not to mention all of my human labor hours.

I was lowballed into selling it for $3200. I was at the time frustrated with getting the steering/handling dialed. Couldn't find the better offset triples that fixed the problem. Lowering the rear didnt' help and imo made the bike handle worse. I was frustrated and let it go for a much lower value becuase I'd picked up a newer 250SX.

I regret it so much.. it was only 4 years ago. I hate to think what happened to that bike.. if it's being stored outside with a cracked case or wheels spray painted black.. shudders

The dollar is extremely weak buying anything right now.  Literally everything is propped up, overpriced and nobody has extra money for anything.

I find myself window shopping for steaks at the grocery store. Ain't no way I'm paying $25 for a steak, but it's nice to dream.

Yes, I get that the hrs will scare some away, but were talking 59 year old, well maintained hrs…not 20 year old on the rev limiter hrs😂….realistically, a new piston as preventative and good for another 100hrs….would let it go cheaper if someone showed up with $ and made reasonable offer….

Is that what was wrong with those things? I borrowed a new 06 at Bithlo about 20 years ago and that thing tried to kill me on the back straight, I gave it back!

Hard to say…timing is important …its not just my bike not selling, I scan every morning….same bikes for sale for months….maybe the KTM”s have lost some shine after their financial crisis? The bikes are still high quality from what I have experienced…

Big buzz on that bike when it came out.  Strong mid range only bike to hang with Hondas mid  , the cr had great top too.  I remember my 1st lap cruising to check the track.  2 A riders on 90 KX 125,s went past me pinned on the ovr rev.  I always shifted on the fat part of the mid. But tried pinned on ovr rev next lap . MC got his 1st sx win on the 90 KX.

This is one of the best looking dirt bikes of all time. Kept hoping I'd run across a 89-92 RM125/250 worth getting.  Almost got a '99 RM125 but it was further away. I'd have stripped it down and painted frame and engine blue, like the 86-87 models. Someone here did a last gen RM that way and it looked killer

What were the trick hop-ups back then, for the '90 KX125?

Was reading some guys liked to use the 89 conventional 46mm instead of the new 41mm USD units.

What was the best pipe to use? Did they take boyesen reeds well? Did people mostly keep the Mikuni carb?

Such a cool looking bike.  You should buy some more RM 125,s.  There’s shit ton on fb , 86-05.  You,d make money on this 97 250. Throw a #2 on it & MC graphics & flip it.  Not sure if you,d want to keep it.  A pal had 1 & everything on including an ignition. That’s a slow bike but fun as hell. 1st lap at Denmark I ripped the whoops & jumped everything, wo on the ovr Rev. Lol IMG 5899

Good question I bet McGrath knows he has 2 of them. I,m sure it’s like cr,s using different pv flaps , goveners for pv, cylinders ,forks,  etc.   psi made great pipes back then, 125 A riders installed it & that’s all in 90. Or pc or fmf .  Full gates too.

Bought my 21 RX with mold marks still on the tires for $6500 in Dec 20.

Sold it Monday for $4250

Market seems fine. Stop paying 12k for bikes when you don’t plan on keeping them.

Not aimed at you personally, but this is part of why the used market is so shittified right now.

image 3525

The mindset seems to be that the only reason to buy something is to immediately turn around and sell it for more, with little or no effort to improve it or even ride and enjoy it for a while. This is another reason we have so many $3,000 machines sitting unsold. Everyone knows the used market is overpriced, and when a few thousand more gets you a brand-new machine without the hassle of dealing with Marketplace, why would anyone pull the trigger?

This non-running basketcase is selling for $1300 right now

Our 26 hour, 24.5 MC250F FE has been sitting for months at $7k. WP6500 kit in the forks and perfectly maintained. Just trades and low ballers but I'm not giving it away. I'll just let it sit outside my office. Market is flooded with used bikes.

I restore old 2 stroke RD Yamahas too. That market is dying off as us old guys get too old to ride. Different reason than dirt scooters but same effect - a flooded market. A nice restoration now costs more than the bike will be worth, so why bother? I've one more in the shop to finish then I'm done.

He might hv to show he can make a little money, he’s married. I was joking but I bought a bike that I knew he was flipping it. 20 hr bikes r a rare find, it didn’t bother me.

its definitely in a weird spot right now. ppl cant pay as much and ppl with a bike feel there is more value than what the market is asking

I can remember paying 800 for a running 1996 rm125 in 2002 (6yrs difference) and a new rm125 was like 5k?

accounting for inflatin that 800 is more like 1500, which is what guys with a 20yr old 2006  250/450 grenaded motor are asking

I think there is a powerful effect re “old guys…”

Most “vintage/historic” bikes appeal to those that rode/lusted after one in their youth.
The guys that rode 1973 CR250s at 18, are 71yo’ s now! Even if they were a 12yo, dreaming of riding one - they are 65.
They might like one for the Mancave, but realistically, not many people will be interested enough to pay top dollar for one in a few years.

We have seen the same thing with “Classic” cars in Australia - the Hero cars of the youth who are 50-60yo now - rocket in value as some 50-60yo’s find they have some, in a few cases a lot, of spare cash, and think “If I don’t buy one now - I’ll never own one!”

As those guys die off in their 70’s and 80’s, the market is almost non existent.
The new cashed up 50-60yo’s want the Hero car of their youth!

I’m guessing there will be a few people disappointed when they inherit the car their Dad payed mega bucks for, and they try and sell it.
In Australia 1971 Ford Falcons the limited edition “GTHO” version cost less than A$5500 new. Have sold for $A1.3M

A few years ago I found and restored a 1979 RM125N because that was my first real motocross bike when I was 17. But I then found at 60, even tho I was still racing and fit, that I couldn't ride it! Something about no power valve and a powerband that only exists from 8500-11500 RPM. Smile I ended up selling it to a collector who put it on his wall.

I still ride my 2 stroke street bikes regularly, and I have a couple old BMWs that are so much fun. I don't know who will want them, or know how to maintain them, when I am gone. Most of the RDs I restore go to older guys in their 60s. Wait - that's ME!!!!

Man! Were they really this hard to ride? Probably not when you were 17, coming off a YZ80!

Seeing tons of well used Starks past warranty with bald knobbies and super tight chains for $1-3k less than I just bought a brand new one for. Gonna sit on my '22 KX 450 for a while, its at the point it won't get much more than a 15 year old bike right now.

I get the bug to buy a vintage bike every year around AMA vintages days time. They look and sound so cool, but then I remember a 1982 bike didn't appeal to me in 1985, so why would I want one now. And the asking prices are unreal.
