Why is it difficult to find a Specialized Turbo Levo Alloy S2 (entry level e mtb)

Cannot buy from website, only found in Pennsylvania and Alabama? Store apparently cannot / willnot transfer.

I know they make a lot of models/options.  Seems there should be more than two in stock on the east coast, though, or at least a way to order one online.

Is there some issue within this industry?  Or is it just Specialized?

Weird. You can get a great deal on a bike here in California right now.

You can probably get an Aventon Current EXP or ADV pretty easily.

I just went through this with Specialized 6 weeks ago with the exact same bike. The only S2 (in a nice Slate grey) was showing in a shop in Washington 600+ miles away. I have a local Specialized dealer in town here in CO. Went in and talked with the owner and he said production of that model has discontinued and new model on the way. I showed him printout of what I found on Specialized website (they had a $1200.00 discount on them running then too.) Owner said he could match the price I showed him from Specialized site too.

Asked him if he could do a dealer trade for that grey 1 or check inventory across USA. He said unlikely they could do a dealer trade, but if so shipping would be like $300.00+ He DID have 1 Turbo Levo SL Alloy on his sales floor but it was an S3 and had me test ride it. My 1st EVER ride on any EMTB but it felt pretty good and I could probably grow into it. So we talked a bit and he said he would call his district manager and ask is that grey 1 was available and also any other inventory in USA warehouses or shops. I told him if nothing else available I would buy his S3 and we shook on it.

Next day he calls and says there's NONE in any inventory- including that grey 1 as the serial number didn't pop up for sale anywhere in USA. So I pivoted back to the S3 and bought it. It seems I got the last in the country, and yes I have adapted to the S3 by adding a different seat and handlebars. My buddy in CA was actually looking and buying a Turbo Levo at same time and neither of us knew. He ended up with the Levo 4 Alloy in S2 and likes it. It does have a bigger motor and battery than mine but is 16lbs heavier but it rides good too.

Thx for that. If you read the whole thing there is some caution out there about DJI.  I am a big fan of the new SRAM system personally.

can't go wrong with Specialized. Lifetime guarantee on the bike and most components. Tons of tunability of the motor and battery use, etc. using supplied MasterMind app. I haven't even scratched the surface yet on that- set up direct from factory is really good. Fox Genie suspension is tunable with lots of settings for compression, rebound, etc. I did swap seat for comfort and added 80mm riser handlebars with new fatter soft/tacky grips like I use on all my moto bikes from VMX to Beta.

I like the reference in the article analogizing Shimano's system to a '92 Accord.  It's always going to work and Shimano is always going to be around to offer support.  Hard to know if any of that is true with these new (at least to us), emerging entities.

They’re one of the few companies where I feel like the lifetime warranty actually works the way you think it would.

Great! Another Chinse manufacturer with inflated specs and no proven track record of quality, reliability, customer service? This says it all...

One of the biggest stories of last month’s Sea Otter Classic trade show was X-Lab, but another was Avinox, the e-bike division of Chinese drone mega-manufacturer DJI – and as it turns out, the two topics are sort of related.

Avinox practically took over the bicycle internet a few weeks ago with the introduction of its M2S eMTB drive system. Most of the hype has revolved around its incredibly high claimed output figures, and at least five dozen bike brands rolled out their own new Avinox-equipped models all at once.

Srams trying to lock up the entire ecosystem. Not a fan of their model. They tend to treat customers as beta testers and are more into planned obsolescence than Shimano is. I try to not support them wherever I can.

It pains me to say, but DJI isn't just another Chinese manufacturer. Btw most of specialized's stuff is made there.

you are mistaken. MOST of Specialized parts including frame are manufactured in Taiwan. Other parts and components manufactured multiple locations around the world. A small % of low-end components and frames made in China. My FOX suspension not manufactured in China, nor seat posts, handlebars, SRAM, wheels, etc.

China has many large companies manufacturing multiple products including CFmoto and others. Most of them have multiple product lines and I think Kove now too? dji is referred to as an "Umbrella" company with about 20 units under the umbrella. They are not any threat to destroy the MTB, or SXS, or moto markets. Check in again in maybe 20 years and let's see how their reputation for quality, reliability, and competitiveness of products stacks up against Japan and longtime Euro off road brands.

I will admit their military has come a long way to advanced planes, subs, space, and cars, but none of the military stuff is battle tested.  Almost none of their technological advances have been home grown from Chinese brain power.

If you are a mountain biker you know Specialized does it right, good products, great warranty and great customer service. Then if you purchase from a good dealer its event better. You can read online about people waiting for part for AmFfo's for 6 months and no bike to ride. Yes the avinox motor is more powerful but to the point you do not need it.  Plus you can only use the boost button randomly or the motor over heats. Still a great motor and good new attempts to the market.

It's murky. High end stuff is Taiwan (or so they say) rest is China. Even some of the Taiwan labeled stuff is not necessarily actually laid up there; there's some fraud happening because of the obvious trade wars.  Taiwan is becoming more and more exclusive. Merida has plants in both places, as does Giant.

Many mfgs like Ibis are moving production elsewhere to places like Vietnam.

Most emtb motors are made outside of the US. Having a lot of torque is not a bad thing, like the article insinuated since Avinox’s flagship bike M2S has 130nm and a boost of 150nm (for 60 secs). That is a pretty good dose, but 130nm is ample. Heck, 110nm is ample. The biggest thing on emtbs is good brakes.

I can’t imagine spending $10k on an emtb. That’s crazy to me, especially when an Aventon Current ADV goes for $3999, with all the good components and a 110nm motor.

I love my Specialized Turbo Levo. I got it used with about 5 miles on it about 3 years ago for $5k. The dude was a Roadie and thought he would try it out, turned out he did not like it.

I call it my Magic Bike as it got me back out on some AWESOME mountain bike trails. Going uphill at my age of 68 on an analog bike is not what I would call a good time.

I am fully aware of Specialized's global operations and use of subcontractors and vendors. I did the deep dive. I'm comfortable the Chinese manufacturing component is limited to producing some bike related products which are produced for sale to the retail industry at large vs making high end parts or complete bikes for Specialized to sell under their own branding. I'm confident any Chinese DNA in these bikes is negligible at best or wholly nonexistent. I totally love my bike as do my friends and many thousands of other happy customers globally. I'll do me and you do you 😁
