Should be good, KTM 300’s still flying off the shelves at dealers. It’s their number 1 power plant.

The Bajaj 390 engine is their #1 power plant by an order of magnitude over any off road platform.

A 2T doesn't have the same deficiencies, just a market that has shifted away from prioritizing simplicity, light-weight, reliability and lower cost for conveniences. 🙄

Disagree. If you ride remotely technical style riding on a 2-stroke, it’s a nightmare without e-start, and it’s really not that great without a wide ratio transmission. Electronic power valve and EFI have made the 2-strokes run so clean at all times now as well.

But in MX world all those things certainly aren’t as nice, still nice but not as nice haha.

Yep, I realize it makes it easier, that's why I used the term "conveniences". But the market seems more interested in those these days than it does in the philosophy that ruled the off-road world for decades - lighter, simpler, cheaper. But a lack of it doesn't spoil my ride if I have to kick my 2T on the side of a steep, slick hill after dumping it like trying to kick a 4T does in the same situation (I almost left a '98 YZ400F in the woods one day because of that exact scenario! 😄).

Like Andy7 was saying - he "wouldn't even think about getting a carbed 450", meaning it's a deal-breaker for him. I don't see that being the case where 2Ts are concerned.

But I probably have different priorities than a lot of the target market nowadays.

👍

Oh man you just me laugh talking about that 400. A friend of mine rode a yz426 for years. Honestly it was a great machine that was enjoyable to ride, but sometimes in a bad situation like you described, going through the 72 steps to kickstart it didn’t make you very happy 😂

Yup, have a MC350F and it's a hammer; the MC250 is just more fun to rip IMO. The TBI 2T bikes are a different vibe from the carb'd 2T. Delivery is smoother and less violent for lack of a better term. All that said, my previous YZs (have owned countless YZs) were amazing bikes, simple, and just a great all around machine. I don't think the carb'd YZ platform is going anywhere anytime soon; but agree the 4T FI bikes are damn near bombproof with proper maintenance for the most part. People just like having something to complain and place blame on.

Yamaha doesn't have a choice. They will have to do something. My guess is a traditional YZ300X based on the current bike with no counter balancer (sell it as lighter!) and an add on flywheel starter like the Panthera kits or first gen e-start Austrians.

If Honda does anything, and it won't be any two stroke, of any displacement, it would be an updated CRF150R to a 125R so it is legal in regular minibike classes (I think the four stroke limit is still 125?).

Suzy isn't doing jack squat. See the Grammar w/ Falcon thread in non-moto if this confuses you.

They would sell a few but it would be short lived.  The counter balancer makes a huge difference when it gets really low traction offroad as in hard enduro.  When I got my first counter balanced 250, the engine felt like a 125 vibration wise.  Tracking up really loose stuff or riding side hill with no rut, the bike doesn't want to walk out from under you.  There is a reason why their best guy isn't riding that 2T anymore.  Mellowing power isn't the only thing involved.   E start is also a must.  If you are just riding track, neither really matter.  If you want to ride challenging offroad both are pretty much a must.

Hype?   2 Strokes are WAY more fun to ride and own than the complicated overweight valve-munching tractors.   99.99% of riders own a dirt bike to have FUN.   Are you really gonna change the world with a local-yocal plastic trophy for the garage wall,  or do you wanna meet your homies at the track and have a blast on the weekend?    You get way more smiles per lap on a smoker than any 4stroke ever made.    Carmichael, Fro,  McGrath, Bubba, TP199 they will all tell you nothing beats wringing out a two-smoke.

Got a YZ250. I just hope the market doesn't lose it as an option for a carbed bike if they decide to go the TBI route if/when they do an update/model replacement.

I dont think that would happen anytime soon because they can grab everyone who does not want efi.  I see yzs all over the place and little to no betas where I mostly ride.

has it ever occurred to you that there are in fact people that don not enjoy a two stroke more than a four stroke? I could have any two stroke dirt bike that my heart desired, in my opinion they all suck to ride compared to the four strokes. Thats just my preference, but the fact is I am not alone. Some of the best days of my life were when i was watching my son ride 65-125's to countless race wins and multiple championships, that kid can make a 125 roll..... but the day he got on a four stroke, it was history and i dont blame him one bit. As far as valve munching, clearly you are stuck in 2002 because that hasnt been an issue in about 20 years as long as hellen keller isnt doing your filter maintenance.

Yes you can, but it still lacks. The Fantic is only a 5 speed and no counter balancer.

If Kawasaki sells a ton of the new KX models, it will be an easier argument. Yamaha will have to see if the KX models steal customers away from their own 2-strokes; if so, they will probably do something. At the moment, Suzuki doesn't seem to have a game plan. I hope they will come out with something new, whatever it is.

they are gonna sell the shit out of them i think, a whole new catergoty of: (spoke with my wallet)

This made me check out the other sized bikes from the mfg’s and I noticed all of the 85’s have a twin cradle frame so they can fit the center port exhaust except the kx85. I even had a kx85 when I was a kid and never noticed this. What is that about? It kind of looks like the pipe comes out straight then curves around the case, that or the exhaust port is offset. Hard to tell. Either way pretty weird and not normal for a 2 stroke with steel frame. What is that about?

Absolutely valid point, and totally OK to like thumpers better.

There is also the small group of riders like myself who, unlike the "fun" guys in JAFO's post, are actually faster in competition on a 2-stroke. You cannot argue anymore that a 2-stroke motorcycle is faster itself, but I am far more comfortable on one. The power characteristics lend themselves to my riding style much better and I can ride like myself. On a thumper, I can't make the thing move around, can't stop it without stalling, and can't get a start.

I’m an avid two stroke lover, for its simplicity and its nostalgia. I give four strokes a lot of shit, but I’m a Ford guy and do the same about Chevy’s.

Not going to lie to you, the night Doug Henry decimated Vega$ on the YZM400, knew I had to have one. And to be honest the YZ400F was probably one of the most versatile motorcycles I’ve ever owned.

Once I learned to not to chop the throttle like a two stroke off the face of jumps.

Anyhoo, we all need to take ourselves a little less seriously.

Yea so apparently its not a centerport exhaust because the powervalve is in the way. The powervalve is at the front and the pipe comes out the side. Id have to imagine that means theyre leaving a little bit of hp on the table seeing as every other bike has gone centerport (except the rmz450, the rmz250 has). Weird.

Yes, you can. But that bike has a Fanric/Minarelli engine not a Yamaha. That's why it's sold here and the 125/250 Fantics are not. Fantic 250/125s are no more different from a YZ than a Husky or GG is from a KTM.

No way in you-know-what is Yamaha going to sell a YZ300X with something other than a Yamaha engine in it.

I’ve been riding KTM 250 WC-Ws since 2015 (with a break to recover from illness in 2019 to early 2022 stuck in there).  In 2022 I really wanted a WR250F, but couldn’t find one, so went XC-W.   However, a few weeks back I was able to get one, so I’m back in the 4T world.

The major reasons why are because I wanted to ride something different from what I had and I wanted to experience the off-road version of the current gen YZ250F.  Oh, and KYB suspension.

I love big bore 2Ts, but we have no idea how this bike handles. A lighter 2T engine shoved into a 4T frame might not have the weight bias right, which is what I hated about the first 4T bikes. I applaud Kawasaki for doing this, but until we know what the whole package is like it's hard for me to get too excited.

As for EFI vs carb, a PWK A/S with the STIC kit is incredible for performance but they use a lot of fuel. They seem to be affected less by temperature and elevation too. I'm not saying were violating the laws of physics or rewriting Bernoulli's equation but with how the STIC passes some air to through the emulsion tube it must provide some compensation whether intended or not. A STIC equipped carburetor is impressive.
