"Heads up parents.  It’s about to get real This case is exploding—and people are taking sides. An Orange County mother is now facing MANSLAUGHT*R charges after prosecutors say her 14-year-old son—riding a high-powered electric motorcycle and allegedly popping wheelies—plowed into and killed an 81-year-old Vietnam veteran walking home from school. The victim, Ed Ashman, wasn’t just anyone. He was a retired U.S. Marine Corps captain who flew combat missions in Vietnam… and was working as a substitute teacher when his life was cut short. Investigators say the teen was riding a Surron Ultra Bee—basically a dirt bike disguised as an e-bike—IN THE STREET… UNLICENSED… and doing tricks… when he slammed into Ashman. And here’s where it gets even more shocking: 💥 Prosecutors say the teen RAN from the scene💥 The mother is accused of letting him ride illegally💥 She’s also accused of covering things up afterward Now the charges have been upgraded to felony involuntary manslaughter. She could be looking at over 7 YEARS in prison. So let’s talk about it— 👉 Is this a tragic accident… or criminal parenting?👉 Should a parent go to prison for what their kid did?👉 Or is this exactly the kind of accountability we need with these powerful “e-bikes” on our streets? A war hero is dead. A teenager’s future is on the line. And now a mother could lose her freedom. What is Justice in this Case?"

What say you all? I personally don't like the sheer #s of kids on these things (disclaimer: doing what I probably would have been doing) with total non situational awareness or consequences of what their group causes. Every day I'll see several groups consuming several lanes of a major road having fun blocking traffic.

We have a bigger problem with those electric scooters around me . The damn things will do 29 mph. I see kids all day long fly by with no helmet on ,blow through stop signs and just weave backend forth depending on where traffic is. I've seen kids riding 2 and even 3 up before . Im really suprised we dont see ore accidents .

It's become the normal around here. Where I see the difference is, when we were kids, we did not walk out in front of cars thinking WE had the right of way. The cars would kill us. We looked for cars before crossing the street, that carried over to a lot of other activities. I see so many kids with their nose in their phone and just walk out into the street expecting the CARS to stop for them. Many times they have ear buds in also and never even know/knew that a car stopped for them. The attitude has changed that whoever is in a car is responsible for everything. So no matter what you do, it's not your fault. How will this change?

News report I watched this morning said she had been told numerous times what her kid was doing and that it was dangerous and she did nothing about it. News report also said the bike could go 60mph.

I'm not a fan in holding parents criminally liable for their kids actions as my step son was a handful to raise and did lots of stupid shit despite his mother and i disciplining consistently and doing our damndest to anticipate his next bad decision. But in this case if she provided him the bike and was told he was breaking the law on it....I dont know man... because I could see where this would go with school shootings. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yaBKm_cTRYE

The ones I don't like is the little lawnmower engine bikes. They are so low to the ground that they get hidden behind cars. I always worry about running one of these sucker's over when they come out of nowhere

I say you should just take one for the team and run them over so they're not in my way next week.

That's sarcasm folks for those that can't tell!

I'm not "generally" a fan of holding parents responsible but to me it's the same thing as a person who lets their dog run free and it hurts someone or kills somebody elses dog. They are to blame. If she was warned about this then she deserves some kind of punishment. DA's love to overcharge though. It's one thing to ride these electric bikes in the street but these little fuckers ride em on the sidewalk around here. Same with the motorized scooters.

I think some of these parents get lost on what's considered an E-bike and what's considered an E-motorcycle.  California does have a name for them which is OCEV's Out of Class Electric Vehicles if they meet certain requirements.  California also has a signed bill (California Bill No. 1271 (SEC.2312.5(d)), that specifically excludes OCEV's from being considered E-bikes.

So actually, this kid is no different from the wheelie boys riding on the streets with that Surron Ultra Bee.  Might as well been riding 450 mx bike on the streets.

Edit:  And if you modify your E-bike so it can go faster than 28mph it's no longer considered an E-Bike it's now an OCEV.

I started a thread about this very thing a month ago. ( Losing Control) It’s out of control and the police are not doing much about it. These kids have no business on any public roadway.

There’s a guy that rides my bus all the time and gets on with his scooter, he told me it  weighs about 75 pounds. It has a huge battery. It’s actually really nice. I asked him how fast will it go. He told me it does 55 mph top speed and that they make some that do 85mph.

I'm not either, but reportedly she was warned by the police (with bodycam footage) that the e-bile the kid was on is considered a motorcycle and it was illegal for the kid to be riding it on the street. She then apparently proceeded to do nothing whatsoever about it. She deserves the charges.

What's in Utah's new e-bike law? – Deseret News

Looks like Utah just implemented a new law to address this.

This is a start, but imo it doesn’t go nearly far enough. Imo if you do not have a driver license you should not be on a public roadway period. No matter how fast a vehicle goes, if it’s powered by a battery or a 50cc or under motor, no one without a drivers license should be on the road. And no one should be on the roads without a helmet no matter your age. Jm2c

There are no helmet laws over 18 where I’m at.

Arizona.  Only mandated equipment is eye protection.

it won't help unless it's enforced.  Utah also has a law against dipshits hanging out in the left lane, i don't know the stats for how much it is enforced but it's probably incredibly low.

all i can say is it doesn't matter where i'm at, there is a kid hauling ass down the side-walk on an e-bike or e-scooter.

At least this gives the cops the right tools and procedures to deal with violations.  The impoundment and fines being structured is a good way to penalize the parents if nothing else.  It's up to the cops now if they want to do the work.

The back one is a Qronge X1 with a top speed of 50mph, yea definitely not an E-bike.

Late to the party but I'll say this, my friends mom growing up tried all kinds of things to keep us from doing crazy things. Chain up the go-cart, lock up the guns, hide keys to the car, ect. None of it stopped us, we picked locks, cut chains, hid ammo. We rode our old dirt bikes down the local walking trail, carried guns on our bikes to the farm. We even broke into a neighbors house because it was vacant for months while for sale when they moved out of state. We've done donuts in people's yards, and paintballed random houses. We've also both been arrested, he spent time in juvenile detention and I was on probation for a year.

I'm also an eagle scout and lead controls service tech at the company I work for. Competing companies hire me to assist them with their building automation issues.

He worked his way up to a Sargent in the Marines, even made Recon before he was killed in a non live fire training accident. Before he died he had given a chunk of his life savings, like $30,000 as a 22 year old, to his church because he wanted to help people. To this day his funeral was the most packed I've ever been to. There were over 1,000 people at it, everyone knew Seth and he was friends with anyone he met. Didn't matter who you were, where you came from, he was a friend.

Don't judge bored kids by the stupid things they do, and I would never want our parents being held accountable for our actions. They tried extremely hard to keep us from doing things, but we are smart monkeys and had lots of time to counter. Some of these punks will grow up and be great people.

I've also posted in MTB threads, cities need to respond by making riding areas and trails for kids to ride these bikes. Ditches, alleyways, under flyovers, it doesn't take much.

Good post. Thanks for a different perspective. I certainly was no angel myself. 🤦‍♂️ That said something really does need to be done with this issue of riding these electric bikes and scooters on public roads and even on side walks. It’s dangerous for kids riding, pedestrians and traffic on public roadways.
