Good question. Is there a contact for someone who works the data for the Vault?
I thought maybe a BSA bantam? But it would say BSA in the vault, not Ban. Anybody even know who Nelson Whitehall is or was? Curious, a lot of strange bikes raced at one time or another in AMA motocross.
I'm guessing this is a typo as it's the only time it appears anywhere in the vault.

I don’t see anything that could fit. Something very obscure or typo.

1974 ? Likely a Bultaco. Or maybe an Ossa. Or a Greeves. Perhaps a Montesa ! Or, a Monark ? *Im intrigued as well…..
Ban is listed even in the brands of the vault as well as results. Two exact same typos?
Could that be from the program compiling from the results manually entered? Cuz I got no idea...
It doesn't look like 2 seperate lists, looks like 1 list populates the other
Could be a shop built bike like the BBR (Brown Brothers Racing) bikes of today. It was legal to run different frames back then as there wasn't a production rule.
AMA results list it as a Ban as well. Nobody knows this Nelson Whitehall?
How about a Bultaco Bandido?
Also Bob Bolenbaugh from Brighton, Michigan? Misspelled in that program. And no further results, because of the spelling.
Bandido, or bandito whichever it may be was my first thought, meaning Bultaco as well. But other than that, I have no clue....... I was only 1 then, still had 3 years before my first gate drop.
The Bultaco Bandido was a 360, and not offered as a 125 machine.
It could be a mistake on top of a mistake, perhaps a mislabeled Pursang maybe?
But if you look at the two guys below Whitehill in mxnick's image, both of their bikes are listed as BUL.
From google:
By 1976, Whitehall had switched to a Yamaha, following the industry-wide shift toward the major factory brands.
Sure
Pit Row
Anyone have pictures of a Bandi motocrosser?
I wonder how accurate google is if the bandi wasn’t offered as a 125. Might’ve been a mislabeled Pursang as a Bultaco Bandido (since the Bandido wasn’t offered as a 125?)
This was what I was saying in my post above. Several shops built one off bikes and used engines from other companies.
They used a Bultaco engine that was 125cc. It wasn't the Bultaco Bandido engine which was 360cc. It really had no ties to the Bandido other than a similar name if the above post is correct above is correct about it being called a Bandi.
After further investigating there was a Yamaha shop in New Mexico called Bandi around that time, maybe that helps?
I think that they just spelled Husqvarna wrong......!
Might have been some sort of autocorrect.
😉
Maybe the manufacturer didn't stroke the AMA and they got Banned?
Pretty amazing catch on this whole thing. Very interesting piece of motorcycle history.
Funny thing about the early 70's. I think there was over 30 different brands racing.
I have always thought when Honda was selling 100,000 Elsinores a year in this country with Steve McQueen on TV ads and there were so many manufacturers, and 100,000 people would show up for a GranPrix in Europe this sport would eventually be huge. Motocross courses scattered around like ski resorts or golf courses, with rental bikes, club houses, locker rooms, etc. was what I envisioned. Good lord has the AMA screwed it up. We are now pretty much not even seen as athletes but "daredevils" and "thrill seekers", most times when somebody finds out I ride a dirt bike they ask if I can backflip. It is sad what could have been, now a lot of us have a nearest track not even within an hour or more, with more closing by the day.
