The old AXO chest/ protectors were awesome. Didn't even know you had one on.
The ones with the full arm protectors were awesome.
I think those were made by Hallmans, Flak Jaks were good too

I really liked the Fox. The old plastic, you could use it playing football or hockey chest protector. Had a few actually save me a couple times.
V2000. Rock fight certified! Had the 2000, the 1000. and the V500. The 500 was the most comfy by far..... Anyone know who produced them for JT back in the day?
Just got the Alpinestars A4 Max and its the same way. First chest protector I've had in a long time that isn't noticeable while you're out on the track.
As for the rule, I wouldn't be surprised to see them mandate the air bags within the next 10 years.
Anything that covers the noted body parts apparently. That's all it says in the rule book.
"Chest & Back Protection:
Approved chest and back protection are mandatory. The protector may be worn under or over the jersey, and it should cover the sternum anterior ribs, posterior ribs, and spine from T1 toT12."
I still have my old purple Fox cp from...a while ago. I don't even know how old it is. But, the thing is sweetness.
That's rather vague, it says nothing about materials. I guess a wife beater would pass those specs.
The rule says "approved chest and back protection . . . ."
So I guess the question is what is "approved." Will the AMA publicize a list of what is approved? Will it make a determination of what is approved?
So much uncertainty.
Wonder if they will soon follow up with a banning of action camera's attached on or around the chest/back protector, similar to the helmet rules for ama races.
in The EU the requirement for most federations and MXGP is a chest and back protection that is CE certified. All the ones Ive seen have a tag that says "CE" on it. As far as I know all A Stars and Leatt protectors are certified.
I few products like the Thor Sentinel and a couple of fox products.are not approved. Who knows if the AMA will put out a certification of their own.
The question is, what CE certification?
CE-Stoneshield, Level 1 Impact, or Level 2 Impact.
I asked someone who would know, and they checked their gear.
CE level 1 or level 2 is allowed in MXGP, EN 1621-3 and EN 621-2
Minimum requirement is Level 1 according to the rule book, but some riders opt for level 2 for better protection, Im told it depends on the track and the weather.

That's good. I never knew there was a difference until I broke 7 ribs eating the crossbar with my chest. After my ER stay, I got to looking at my protector and wouldn't you know it... CE Stoneshield only. My boy and I only wear Level 2 front and back now.

Those chest protectors were all produced in house. My sister worked there in the 70's and I worked there in the late 80's. The plastic pieces were cut and formed at a local plastic company in San Diego and then an employee would glue each pad to the plastic pieces and attached all the straps and arm guards with rivets and place the logos by hand. I assembled lots of those and I remember I hated every minute of it. The area that had glued on pads had to be roughed up a little and the smell of the burning plastic is stuck in my mind forever.
