When I first heard this penalty, I assumed he went inside to inside when trying to move up from his 10th place start. The one video clip i saw it looked like He ran over one course marker while choosing a lane. He probably actually lost time. This seems like a bad call.
I think the AMA saw it as a chance to appear disciplinarian. They took a lot of body shots after the flashing light fiasco, and they want to do something to justify their existence.
Makes sense. Riders aren't used to a split lane and in the heat of the race it has the potential to trip you up a little. Like Ryan Dungey messing up the joker lane during a Monster Cup race.

Honest question- in this case, or others like it, I get it that there is a rule in the rule book, but is there also a written penalty for the infraction? Or is that a judgement call?
Can’t stand him or his clown show family, but you are 100% correct. The guy is a man among boys and is making the rest of the field look like they’re still racing B class. Credit where credit is due.

A rider can go off of track in a turn, ride down the side of the whole 70 yard lane missing every obstacle, get back on in the next corner and not lose a position or any time and it's okay, but going outside a single white marker while not gaining a single position and losing time is somehow a full place penalty?
The AMA has lost it. That and the Ferry penalty is nuts. Ferry didn't even run him all the way to the edge of the track. There are passes like that every race. Hell Tomac's pass on JC was almost the same. 🤦
They penalized Ferry because that attempt was so bad he took them both out. If Ferry rode away from that I doubt he'd have been penalized.

Who all exactly makes these calls? The ongoing inconsistency in rule enforcement is reaching epidemic levels. I know Mike P is involved and I think Lusk, but the application (and lack of) of penalties is approaching truly unreasonable territory, leading to absurd outcomes. I’d argue this inconsistent enforcement violates the spirit of the sport and is compromising its integrity.
Broke the rules and got popped. Cool guy move is to act like you don’t care but still talk about it

Deegan played the AMA to benefit his team:
1. Deliberately switch lanes while coming through the field to invoke a penalty - check
2. Proceed to blow past the field and gap them all the way to the checkers to prove you are the fastest rider - check
3. AMA proceeds with a penalty which helps your teammate and hurts HRC and PC - check

I am no deegan fan but god damn they really do pick and choose which rules they want to enforce don’t they? Crossed split lane effecting nobody, penalized. Vince repeatedly holding up the leaders as a lapped rider, zero action taken
We’ve had split lanes for 20 years. Riders are used to it
When Deegan made the decision to use the other lane and change direction his front Tire missed the first white marker by inches not feet.
I hope he challenges it just like RC did.

He took that inside to outside lane the whole race…I think he just missed the line he was taking which caused him to wash a little as he was cutting over and hit the marker.
Pretty wild that all of the controversial penalties seem to benefit Star racing. Is it just because they have 30 riders or is there something I'm missing? like a sponsor that has influence over the AMA or something like that.
