What could possibly give you the idea that my aversion to psychopathic sadism means that I think we should do absolutely nothing and let thieves get away without any consequences? I’m not saying that punishment - even harsh punishment - isn’t appropriate. I’m saying that there’s something profoundly wrong with expressing that you would take pleasure in seeing someone publicly tortured and mutilated. The choice isn’t between public torture for entertainment or doing nothing at all and to suggest otherwise is both cruel and stupid.
I’m also objecting to the racism being either implied or expressed overtly. Some of that has been deleted but here’s an example that I just screenshotted. Do you think this is okay? White collar criminals steal at orders of magnitude above what these thieves do but you don’t see the same vitriol aimed at them.

Perhaps I should explain the point of the above statement. Australia 182 stated that he can’t stand “these n*****”. He goes on to say something about the South Sudanese, but the context is a discussion about the people who stole Kailub Russell’s bikes, so he seems to be making a statement linking these two separate things (the bike thieves and the South Sudanese). It’s pretty obvious what that is. His derogatory term appears to apply to both - and can sensibly be read as a broad racial generalization. If that’s the sort of thing that the Vital community is ok with, then I find that to be surprising, disappointing, and a shame. I’ve thought most people here to be pretty decent but perhaps I’ve misjudged.
I get the anger that causes people to advocate for cruel punishments. I don’t like it, but I get it. Overt racial slurs eliciting anything other than universal condemnation, on the other hand, is something I don’t understand.

I don't use, or care for racial slurs either, but I can fully understand the frustration with both the perpetrators and the enablers in local and state gov'ts that allow for them to run roughshod over local populations. Your lack of proportionality is puzzling...it's fine to condemn slurs (we should - absolutely), but that stuff pales in comparison to these scumbag thieves, murderers, rapists, etc. that should not be walking free - ever.
When did I say that thieves, rapists, or murderers should be walking free? I absolutely don’t think that. Is it either public castration or nothing?
Of course rape and murder is worse than using a racial slur. Doesn’t mean we should tolerate racial slurs.

And what do you think it just punishment for these two in this case, who have been arrested before for similar crimes? Clearly the punishment for the earlier crimes did nothing to scare them from doing it again.. and again.. and again. Keep in mind what they did in this case.. went into a mans home, took a bunch of stuff...etc. So what should be done for punishment to prevent this behavior.
Interesting debate technique in creating, binary false choices (and quite disingenuous). Not a fan of this at all...it's simply not the path to an honest exchange of ideas.
Having dealt with theft of two newer 450s, then watching them daily for years now on Instagram and the police refusing to do anything about it, ive lost hope. Those morons will be back to it in no time and will absolutely never learn. All ive learned is to protect my stuff better and be prepared to handle it on my own. My bikes get wheels pulled and a GPS tracker installed (not a cheesy air tag).

We once had about $20K of canola stolen from a bin on our land once when my dad and I were still farming. I’ll admit that in my anger I’d have liked to have seen the thieves strung up by the balls. But that’s not the best time to judge. Upon sober reflection, that’s not the kind of person I want to be. I’d just like the value of our stuff back and put the thieves away so they don’t do it again and so other would be thieves know that if they get caught they will lose their freedom for a long time. I don’t need them to suffer for the sake of my loss - their pain wouldn’t help me. If it did, I’d be concerned. And that’s my point - not so much about punishment and more about our own moral psychology. Do you really want to be the kind of person who wants to see and enjoy things like torture and mutilation? That’s what I’m reacting to: Some of what’s posted here is sadism dressed up as justice. I don’t have to know precisely how justice should look to know that sadism isn’t justice, and that if you find yourself enjoying thoughts of sadistic punishment, that’s probably not something to be proud of.
It's not about me taking joy in it, it's a recognition that some people are animals who can only be deterred by the threat of pain. It takes some small level of intelligence than many of the people committing these crimes do not have for the threat of confinement to be a deterrent. Everyone understands pain. If I calmly put one of my dogs in it's crate the other one doesn't care. If I smack one of my dogs they both run away scared.
