Hi guys, I’m looking to do a Supercross roadtrip with my dad (flying in from Europe). It’s been a long time dream of mine to do this trip together, and this year it looks like we can finally get to accomplish this.
I’m considering two options:
1) Rounds 4 and 5 - Houston, Glendale
2) Rounds 8 and 9 - Daytona, Indy
We’d like to drive in between the two locations and see cool places (car museums, nature, maybe se an NHL or NBA game).
Daytona has an obvious draw with the Bike Week after the race, but I’m not sure it’s as good venue to watch the race as a traditional stadium Supercross.
I’m open to any suggestions, advice or tips what option to choose and would you recommend to visit along the way. Cheers guys!
Can't tell you anything about west option.
If you're moto obsessed and do the Daytona- indy route, there's a couple potential things you could do to make it interesting. Lot of practice facilities you could at least drive by and try to sneak a peak at. Bakers and sandbox and some others in central Florida, star Yamaha and triumph in Georgia, club mx in South Carolina.
Or you could swing through Birmingham Alabama and go to Barber Motorcycle museum. Can hit Nashville for a night or two If you want to experience some American debauchery or country music. And even if open wheel racing isn't your thing, Indianapolis motor speedway and the museum there are also worth a visit.
Atlanta Nashville and indy all have pro sports options. If Nashville predators have home game that week the stadium is right on Broadway and a good time.
There is almost nothing between Phoenix and Houston. If these are your only two choices, Daytona bike week and Indy are a far better option. In the future, the West Coast races (Anaheim and San Diego) would be far better than either of those choices, and I’ve been to all of the races you’ve mentioned. You just can’t beat SoCal in the winter for moto tourism.
Of those two, I’d choose Daytona/Indy. Definitely go to Barber Motorsport Museum mentioned earlier.
Well that your opinion but Indy , Daytona is the way to go. So much to do other than sit in traffic half the time. Get to see a SX in a dome and than at a Speedway as well as all the things to do in between.

Daytona, Indy. Hear me now, on your way to Indy, you MUST stop at the Air Force museum near Dayton, Ohio. Wright-Patterson AFB. It’s free. You’ll need 3-4 hours. Also, if you are coming up 75 from Florida, stop at Old Car City in Cartersville, Georgia, also Savoy Car Museum close by. Best of luck, enjoy.

Without a doubt Daytona to Indy
My vote would be Daytona / Indy also. Bring a jacket for the Indy trip that time of year though.
That’s going to be one expensive rental car but Daytona and Indy for sure.
Indy/Daytona is the way to go! Hit up St. Elmo's in Indy, and the Red Garter, wink wink. Bike week in Daytona is a must see. The race is cool and the people watching during bike week is hilarious. Lot's of stuff to do in between, as mentioned above. Sounds like a great trip, I want to come along!
If you do Daytona to Indy, don't forget to swing by the AMA Hall of Fame in Pickerington, OH. It's on the way if you're coming up I-77 and head west on I-70
This is a really good point. If you pick up a rental car at one airport and drop it off at another, you will be charged mileage. I rented one in Ohio one time and drove it to Tennessee for Loretta’s. When I dropped it off at the airport, I was greeted by a bill that included $1000 charge for mileage!
Your better bet would be to rent a car in Florida, explore Florida, then turn it back in. You can fly from Sanford/Orlando airport to Indy on a cheapo airline like Allegiant or Frontier for probably $100 a person or less, then rent a car (or just Uber to your hotel) when you get to Indy. Assuming you’re staying somewhere downtown, Indy is very walkable and has museums, monuments, etc to explore.
Yeah it’s about a 16 drive with gas stops and 1000 miles. Add the possibility of snow.
Would be an awesome adventure for a father son.
Interesting fact, Indianapolis has more monuments dedicated to veterans than any US city outside DC.
As a sheltered west coast guy, I suggest Daytona and Indy. Houston and phoenix aren’t the nicest places
You would have fun with either... although I would suggest Denver and Salt Lake City for the scenic drive between the 2 locations.
Thanks guys, love the pointers! Definitely sounds like Daytona and Indy is the way to go. Plenty of places to visit along the way too. Regarding Daytona, anyone who’s been would have a recommendation for the best place in the stands to watch the race?
Enterprise rental the last couple times I got one was unlimited mileage
They are all unlimited mileage as long as you drop the car off where you picked it up. If you drop it off at a different airport than you picked it up at is where they get you. Picking the car up in FL and dropping it off in Indy would be really expensive. If Enterprise’s policy is different in this regard, I wasn’t aware.
Edit: Even Enterprise charges if you pick it up at one airport and drop it off at another. Book it ahead and get the fee up front if this is your plan.

Pit Row
Somewhere in the middle of the stands i Also, if you have strong ankles and don't mind standing most of the time - the trackside access puts you right next to the SX track on the banked pavement of the tri-oval track. It gets a little crowded down there though, and people get a little rowdy. You are allowed to bring in your own canned beer, so empty beer cans just slide down the banked pavement next to your feet. The track is pretty long lengthwise, so if you are at either end of the stands, you won't be able to see much on the other end. Even in the middle, you miss some of the action in the far sections - but there are big screens that capture the action as well.
Honestly I would do Dallas (Arlington) -Daytona. AT&T stadium is probably the best venue to watch SX, massive building, massive viewing screen, very easy to see whats going on. Lots to do in Dallas (good BBQ), then head south east through Cajun country (lots to do and good eats) on your way to Florida. Been to Daytona SX and bike week a couple times, its more of a party, it gets a little wild.
there’s a chance you will need one in Florida too with the way the weather has been
That's bad ass!
Yeah, it's a total crap shoot in FL during March-April. It could get as low as the high 30s/low 40s if a cold front is passing through (I know, not cold compared to up north). But at the same time, there's an equally likely chance that it's already warm again, with long, sunny afternoons getting into the 80s.
8 and 9,but check the weather. The last time I drove to Houston was " the last time!"
Lots of desert and mountains to explore if you did Houston and Glendale. The drive between Houston and Glendale would be completely unlike anything you could experience in Europe in terms of scenery (desert and red rock type scenery). You could drive through the mountains of New Mexico/southern Colorado into Northern Arizona, visit the Grand Canyon and Sedona, do some hiking down the Sonora desert around Phoenix, etc. The mountains in Colorado near the 4 corners are spectacular, though in the winter the travel can be dicey for sure. Cool restaurant scene in Scottsdale (Phoenix area), etc.
Agree that Houston is not the greatest. Its just a huge sprawling American city. Not a ton of character IMO. I would not spend any time there if it was me. Fly in, see the race, then head west.....
The East Coast is going to generally look like much of Europe from a scenery perspective. But, if you do the Daytona/Indy route spend some time in the Smoky mountains in Tennessee/North Carolina on the way, some nice spots in there for sure.
Either way, have an awesome trip!
THIS^^^^
Is that just an airport thing?
Seeing Eli shred Daytona on that orange rocket ship should be enough to make up your mind for you.
That’s a solid point.
Not sure. That’s the only place I ever rent cars. I’d ask first. I learned the hard way.
