Most offroad friendly japan 450 today?

Edited Date/Time 11/2/2025 10:28am

So the season for me is over now when winter is knocking on the door here, and my mind starts to think that i maby should change up the bike for next year.

Im currently on an husqvarna fe350 2023, it is good but im looking for something new to spice it up a little. I have been on austrian bikes for a lot of years now and want to get away from them. Im 220 pounds and like to ride bike in very low in the rev range. So a 450 should suit me but i it has been some years since i rode a mx 450.

So to the bike, on my mind right now is the 26 yz450 or the honda 450. Does anyone of you guys have any experience with one of those bike off road?  My biggest concern is if the bike stalls easy i dont like that.

Really depends on your style of offroad riding. I’d be worried about a 4fatty overheating in extended tight stuff. Otherwise, I have a couple of buddies who ride the yz450fx in the woods and enjoy them.

The trails around my area are tight, rocky, and technical. My 450 mx bike just didn’t turn as well; was difficult to control, and overheated. If I had faster wide open trails, I’d take a 450 all day. Since I’m 200 lbs, I  went with a 300 two stroke for trails. It really is the perfect bike (not biased at all 🙂)

I second the YZ450FX, very popular in my neck of the woods.

Being you are on an FE350 currently and not the FX or FC 350. The jump you are talking about making to a Japanese MX version or even and cross country version 450 is huge. I wouldn’t suggest doing that but to each their own. You’d be better off going to a yz250fx or stay on Austrian and try out a FX350 if you want to try some more power.

I have a KX450 I ride on everything.  MX Track, trails/single track.  Although my choices for trails and single track are limited.  I have one loop where I ride thats kinda a combination of both and it does fine and never over heated.   On a hot day I would not do any long slow technical trail riding on my KX.  I’m sure there is possibility of over heating.  With that said I mainly stay on the track as that is what I’m most familiar with.  That and we have 4 good MX tracks in the Houston area.

To tame my KX450 down and make it easier to ride, track, offroad  I added a 10oz Stealhly flywheel to my KX.  Run non aggressive mode with traction control.  You crank the throttle and it’s still a 450, 10oz flywheel or not it will let you know it’s a 450.  Just kinda slowed things down a bit.  Took a tick off engine braking too which I like.  Made for a fairly easy to ride 450, but my arms still get tired my quicker than my 250 Honda R.

I’m of the opinion If a guy is mainly riding off-road and practice day at the track every now and then, get a kickstand bike.  YZX or similar.  A kickstand bike will still get you around an MX track just fine unless you are really fast.  There is a guy that races off-road I see at Ultimate MX in Alvin, Tx.  He blows by most everybody on a kickstand Gas Gas 350.

If I had room in the garage and my wife wouldn’t kill me.  I’d buy 2 stroke YZ250.  Throw a large tank, heavy flywheel, maybe even aftermarket electric start and make a cool woods bike or whatever.

Yz450fx for transmission.

Kawi for contingency

100% agree with you. And knowing that Finnish enduro is very slow paced and technical would make the switch to a YZ450F or CRF450 even worse.

To OP. I did some enduro riding at my local slow paced trails (Pohjanmaa area) back in the day when i had a 2020 YZ450F and i hated it. So bulky, so heavy and stiff feeling.

But if you really want a 450, then i would get a KX450 or KX450X.

What kind of offroad riding do you do? Both are fantastic bikes, but as others have pointed out in really tight single track can overheat and feel heavy. If you're going to end up with 18 inch wheel, a headlight, oversized tank, and a flywheel weight you should see what's available, but I suspect the Yamaha wins here. Personally I'm a Honda guy but the latest YZ is really good.

A 450 mx bike is just tough in the woods man.  Alot of power, over heats, rotating mass makes hard to turn.  In fast western stuff maybe but I tried one out here in nc , sc, wv, tenn, ga, va and its just too much.  The 2 best bikes I have rode in the woods and i was fastest on was a 250xcf and the 250xc.  The yz250x was great too I just want a button.  For you id say 350xcf/fx or a 300 2 stroke for your size.

There’s a long thread on the KX450 and KX450X. All positive.

If you end up in the woods on a 450, a radiator fan is a must. Mine runs quite a bit, pulls the temperature down quickly whenever we get into tight stuff.

My buddy is your size and has a ‘25 yz250f and a ‘25 yz450f set up for enduro/harescrambles in NJ. He added a dual injector to the 250 and rides that way more. I would argue that most stock 250s are going to have more grunt than your FE350, unless you have it mapped. 450s are a pain in the ass in the woods. Kailub Russell raced a 250 in the XC1 class for most of the season for a reason.

Like others are saying, 450's in the woods just sucks.  I'd be waiting to see if the new green 300 ever makes the light of day..

YZ450FX I think is best in 450 category for Japan brands.

Husky 450 XC model is fantastic for handling and smooth power but obviously not Japanese.

350XC's are amazing with spring forks and a 300 two stroke is phenomenal in trails.

WR450F. Haven't ridden one, but I've been really eyeing one.

My buddy has a WR400F, and that isn't really comparable at all to today's WR450, but I hear good things.

Think it's a pretty sensible move from a FE350. The adjustability of the newer yahmahas w/ the power tuner app is really interesting to me as well.

If you want something well developed that will lug well and not pull your arms off, fe450. If you want to take a shot on something new try the triumph enduro bike. A beta 390 or 430 might also work well. The only Japanese 450 designed for trail riding is the Honda 450x not the RX. The Honda RX, Yamaha fx, and kawi x all use the mx engine which are all relatively high strung and don’t like being lugged at trail speeds.

Was told a crf450 bored down to a 400cylinder is an absolute weapon. I really like my 25yz250f in the woods though. Get the gearing setup right and any bike should be good to go

You realize your fe350 makes about 20hp less than a 450 mx engine right? You are going to go from one of the weakest off-road engines to one of the strongest.

Yeah there were some teething issues on some 23's but mine has been bulletproof. I think you'd be shocked how much better it works than your 350 as well.  Before you plunk down the cash I highly recommend spending a little time on one, I would bet you will be very surprised how easy it is to ride but also fast as hell.

I had a '24 YZ450FX and struggled getting it setup. It was great on the MX track and faster, wide open courses, but I could not get the thing sorted in tighter stuff. It was just too much off the initial crack of the throttle even with a Vortex ECU, hydro clutch, and taller gearing. I moved on to a '25 Beta 300RR Race and haven't looked back. It does everything pretty damn well. I did have a TBI 300 prior to the 450 and really enjoyed that bike too.
