I got that. And agree. But that doesn’t seem to be what people want anymore. This kind of discourse went out with Obama and John Boehner. Didn’t mean to conflate, apologies.
I agree, that would be great, but I don't place the blame on the politicians. If enough people wanted respectful discourse and policy debates that's what we would get. Instead we get rage filled division and views on policy are all validated by emotion and not an actual understanding of the issues. Talking policy is for losers and my emotion is more important than your knowledge on the issue.
We did this, not politicians. We're the ones that decided you can't talk about politics in polite company or congregate with people who don't agree with each other. I mostly blame social media for this. 30 years ago communities hung out together and even if you had strong feelings about certain issues nobody would regularly voice them to the entire community. People were physically present with each other all of the time and that's really the only way people interacted, so our interactions were nearly always civil. So much of that has been replaced by online community where that natural pressure to be civil doesn't exist. Now we see all of our neighbors political rants online and find it very easy to dislike them over this view or that. We see a side of them that we never did in the past. Politicians are just responding to that, giving us what we want. We'll get better politicians when we're better. It won't happen as long as people are living on algorithm driven social media.

Yea I think you hit the nail on the head. The only distinction I’d make is that I think we know this is bad for us as a whole but we’ve conflated politics with entertainment. They used to be separate. Now we treat politics like a reality show even though we know it’s bad for us. Up until trump (at least in my lifetime) politicians largely stayed away from this type of discourse.
I’d be interested to see if there are any studies out there that deal with inmates who unalived themselves while waiting to go on trial for cases that the prosecution has zero evidence for. I mean, there’s got to be some kind of trend, right?
