First off, I didn’t know Cairoli was just south of 40. I know he’s been around a long time but the light didn’t go off…..I’m old and from Oklahoma! JS referred to him as a test rider. Dang fast Test rider ya might say.
I thought he did pretty good on a stock Desmo or near stock…..who knows. I guess he had a mechanical, forgot how many laps down last moto. Not the start Ducati wanted but he ran 9th first moto and had decent start second before things went south. I’d say the new bright red bike is competitive.
Be interesting to know what happened, anybody got the scoop.
Electrical problem:
I guess they were using Redbud as a "shakedown" of the Desmo 450, and the bike seemed to do very well...other than the electrics. Tony proved why he's a multi-time World MXGP Champion. Even at nearly 40, he beat a whole slew of hotshot American factory riders.
Very impressive to me.
Well, he gives me, a 40 year old, a lot of hope to be faster on a dirtbike...

I think it was more of a marketing move, since they’ve been “shaking down” the bike all year in MXGP. I think they wanted to promote the production bike by putting it on display at arguably the biggest US MX race of the year. If it makes some racers think twice about visiting their local Ducati dealer, then mission accomplished.
Ducatis are hand made for VET riders over 40. They will definitely make you faster. And look cool in the garage. If I can scrounge up an extra $19k (add ons from the Ducati website) I’m getting one. Haha.
That dude is amazing…
And, how did he finish the video?
RED BUD!
Sort of puts the x pros racing LL in perspective.
I hope my wife doesn’t hear me but my interest in Ducati……is a 250. With that said I think Ducati was smart throwing a seasoned rider on a stock or near stock bike with a lot of visibility. Ducati may have delivered a decent racing scooter to the market. At least I hope so.
Shocks me that anything Italian could possibly have electrical issues.
Pretty impressive starts for a stock bike with a pipe. Impressive finish for a 40 year old that’s been retired a few years now.
Very impressive ride by an almost 40 year old! He did well in his one GP as well!
I thought that was a pretty damn good showing. Unfortunate about the tech glitch in the second moto but stoked for AC and Ducati and having them over here.
Won’t be long, Ducati Desmos will hit showroom floors in the USA!
Did you add the titanium stand and Ducati trousers?!
Stock bike getting 3rd off the gate against a field of factory bikes is DAMN IMPRESSIVE..
I’m not a Ducati guy but I thought the same thing. That bright red bike come off the gate pretty dang stout!
No, but I did add the factory brakes. I’m not sure how they’ll help me the the 40+C class, but I want them.
Pit Row
Ummmmm That was an impressive ride for a 20 year old, forget the fact he is 40! You could tell the suspension wasn't as high end as the guys he was racing against and he was still running the pace. Damn impressive debut, Bravo Tony!
Such a bad dude. He's older than Stew right? If so how crazy is THAT?
Coming from a master electrician, that comment made my day! Well said buddy
It looked way better than Hampshire's bike, to me. RJ's forks looked incredibly stiff for an outdoor setup.
Qualifying session 1 : Antonio has the 11th fastest lap, with a 2.08.941, which is 4.409 seconds slower than Jett. His lap put him in the same second than Aaron Plessinger, Joey Savatgy, Cooper Webb, Cornelius Toendel, RJ Hampshire and Benoit Paturel
Qualifying session 2 : Antonio gets the 10th fastest lap with a 2.07.870, which is 3.850 seconds slower than Jett. He runs in the same second a lap than Cooper Webb
Moto 1 : Antonio starts in the top 5 but is point 8th at the end of the first full lap. He gets passed by Jason Anderson, Chase Sexton, Justin Barcia and Coty Schock and he is pushed back to 12th. He then got by Schock and Anderson, take the benefit of Eli Tomac's bike problems to finish 9th, with a gap of 1.19.346 with race winner Jett Lawrence. Antonio's fastest lap is a 2.11.430 compare to Jett's 2.06.637 (4.793 seconds différence), and his lap is in the same second as Cooper Webn
Moto 2 :
Antonio is running in 4th position for 2 full laps before stopping in the pits and calling it a day. His fastest lap is a 2.11.705 compare to Jett's 2.07.263 (4.442 seconds gap), which is a second slower than Tomac, Webb and Anderson, and a second faster than Barcia and Schock.

It was a really impressive performance and I love that he can put his ego aside and just line up for fun.
It’s easy to get behind a rider that loves his sport so much. Valentino Rossi comes to mind as a good comparison for Cairoli.
As much as he impresses me, it also put a light on some of the factory riders lack of performance. A retired soon to be 40 year old rider that has not raced full time for many years should NOT be able to beat a current factory rider that train every day, is younger and has a fresh racing memory in his body. But that is on them..
If he finished last it still would have been impressive. How can ya not like/appreciate the guy?
Good point, I do remember seeing 250s holeshot mxdn races though, we all have. How much power do you really need…
It’s super strange to see Tony in a Monster hat
IMO… the fact that a Manufacturer can bring a brand new unproven motorcycle to a MX national and run up towards the front of the pack says a lot about the bike. Very impressive. But Cairoli , what a frigg’n Stud he is! Amazing rider. I wish he’d come and run our series full time.
Not sure which is the story of the day-Jett putting a beat down on the field, Prado leading 1/2 the moto, or Tony and Ducati. Tony is so impressive as is the bike. If he stays in the 2nd moto he easily stays in the top 8. Unreal for 40 years old on basically a stock bike.
Post a reply to: Ducati/Cairoli………what ya think, comments please
