Deegan still has zero hole shots on the outdoor season .. not like it’s some extreme advantage . Things change , progress , go back to original ways , is what it is .

What if without them, he had zero hole shots, zero top 10 starts, hell zero top 20 starts

It’s impossible to say it isn’t an advantage just because he’s not getting the holeshot

Would be like saying the dudes running big bores in the 125 class back in the 90s didn’t have an advantage because they weren’t winning

C'mon, there is 0% chance they are "pushing" off of the blocks. they might move what 2 inches doing that and get the bike all squirrely.

Its purely to get the feet on the pegs as soon as possible, no matter how tall you are that's the goal.

my wife brought up a good point when listening to steves rant and his suggestion for limiting them based on the height of riders.

If you limit them based on the overall height of a rider, you are potentially putting people at a disadvantage who have a longer torso and short legs. Just because someone is 5 foot 7, they can have longer legs than someone who is 5 foot 10. This happens all the time and its why when you go to buy a suit they tailor the inseam for you.

This was my first thought when they were ranting. I'm 6'2 and wear 36" inseam jeans. Could go longer but its hard enough getting a 36. I have a friend who is 6'3" and he's a 32" inseam. Get rid of the blocks all together. Its not like other sports let the athletes use things to help aid them in the height department. Thats part of it having the right build.

Look at me with my long torso and stubby legs. I'm 6'1" with 32" inseam jeans

Then why do they need the angled pieces on there?

I'm for banning all this shit... start blocks, starting devices, start maps, grates.... I mean what's next? Will they put sensors on the front wheel that see the gate drop and launch the bike for the riders?

Because if they didn't have that back piece his toes would be the only thing touching the block because that's the angle his feet are at. If he was pushing off in anyway his feet would be dangling behind the pegs which is not good.

You can see in this video there is not one ounce of pushing off the blocks.

So there is no chance of them falling over, just think about the physics of it for a second if they are pushing off the blocks their feet would be behind the pegs and dangling behind them like ronnie mac.

Wow, that’s a great idea. I wonder how the clutch would actuate though?

Pull the clutch lever in and it locks in place. Sensors detect the gate dropping and release the “pin” in the clutch perch itself.

The sport would be way less predictable if they just started on dirt, no holeshot devices, no blocks, no rev lights. No start maps.  Seems like the easiest fix to both series to instantly make it less monotonous and more entertaining.

Most of you have probably not started on concrete or expanded metal. Ive started on both and could barely tip toe to touch the ground at 5'8, which is about the average of most riders on a pro starting line. On dirt I can get close to flat footed because of the rut behind the gate.

That being said, I think AMA pro racing should implement a similar rule that AMA has at the National Amateur Championship. Riders can only use the blocks supplied by the facility, or make it a standard size.

Levi was the first one I saw with blocks up to his footpegs during the 21 Amateur Major events

While we’re trying to make it “Fair” for everyone based on body type…. Maybe the light guys should have to strap weights on so they weigh as much as the heaviest guy in the class ? I mean it’s not fair that one guys weighs 30 pounds more than another guy is it ?

😁

That's how it's done in a lot of car racing classes.

Instead of just standing around looking pretty , maybe we could enlist the Monster girls to measure inseams for proper start block compatability?

Fuck that, that ruined world superbike. The Alvaro Bautista rule/penalty.

Never had an issue at any of the amateur days at nationals at 5'6 with a 29 inseam. With my front holeshot locked I'm on my tip toes. If I use my rear hotshot as well I'm flat footed. If just the front a my 2x4 starting blocks get me more than comfortable on my 250 or 450.

Honestly don't see anything more than 4 inches being necessary overkill or just trying to get ur feet as close to the pegs.

As far as the push or not. A good part of it is to get your feet to the peg as quick as possible. But Ive heard from enough that know its not a huge push but its enough that they do take it into account.

Hard to believe that's legal. Maybe that's at the practice track.

These fuckin starting blocks are just beyond ridiculous now. There needs to be a revision to the rule for them. No more than 4 inches of height no tilts or angles to push yourself forward. I'm all for them to make things a bit more even for us vertically challenged but with front and rear holeshot devices its not like back in the day when we started with full travel in our suspension.

Haha, Deegan's 'heightening'.

I vote for introducing bikini clad starting assistants.

That picture's actually pretty realistic when you think of the number of people of short stature on the line: Deegan, JCoop, Webb, Beaumer, Masterpool...

Did the broadcast on Saturday show a closeup of Deegz starting blocks or something? Funny the timing of this thread. This was a topic of conversation down at the gate on Sunday, how ridiculous the starting blocks have gotten

I remember starting with only my right foot on the ground and keeping my left foot on the peg so I was quicker at shifting into 2nd or 3rd gear on tracks that had cement pads (late 90's, early 2000's).  The only time I ever used blocks was when I first jumped to the 80 class at like age 8 or 9 because I could barely touch the ground on my tip toes. Once I grew tall enough I didn't use or want them. Didn't feel like it was any advantage and certainly never "pushed" off using them.

I don't really give a shit about guys using blocks, but what I am in favor of is getting rid of all the other shit. The starting grates, holeshot devices, rev lights on the fender to tell you what RPM to hold it at. Even having special ECU maps just for the start is stupid to me. IMO it takes a lot of the skill out of it. The starts are half the race and practicing them was just as important as time on the track.

I've never understood starting blocks/hole shot devices. If you simply ban all this tech and just make everyone start the same....isn't that the "fairest"? Everybody wants an advantage with these little tools (which I get) but then you have Deegs pushing the limit (which is fine). But wouldn't just banning all this shit actually make the racing more "equal"?

IMO
