Tomac had a lot of time in that race to get hunter and didn't. Kinda surprised.

Hunter was riding pretty damn good though

That's all valid but Guillod is faster than him right now. He's on a stock Yamaha with zero prep in the US and just comes back from a broken collarbone. But Prado has been known to take it easy when he doesn't feel it. Hopefully Moto 2 is better

Prado also switched to an aluminum frame for the first time in his career.

So did Tortelli when he went 1-1 at Glen Helen as the reigning world champ Wink

Jett holeshots & runs away with it. 12 seconds ahead of 2nd.

Sexton already 25 points down, 2nd moto likely won't be very good after that tough wreck & eyes have to be pretty fked up.

Tomac - 4th, looked good, not great. 16 seconds off first.

Webb - DNF

Prado - 7th not bad all things considered but damn, 57 seconds behind first.

J Coop probably the biggest surprise coming in 2nd.

Tomac stayed in the 2:20 for a few laps, his hammer down style isn't the best for this track I don't believe

I try not to read into Pala results too much as it's so different to the rest of the tracks on the circuit and first race of the season is always weird anyway, but it already looks like it's gonna be hard for anyone to beat Jett this season

Wild. The Nationals are that much of a culture shock from MXGP?!

There's adapting and there's getting 40 seconds put on your head by 4 riders, none of whom have rode 'exceptionally'. Jett is Jett but this is an ordinary Jett ride not some 15 hangtown Tomac shit

He's coming off a significant shoulder injury and was quoted as saying he's not coming in 100%. Add that to the other factors already mentioned above, I don't think it's much of a surprise.

He's on a new bike, new team, new country, new series and race format, and coming back from injury.

Add to that, Pala is a weird track.

A lot to learn in a short amount of time. Year two will be more telling.

Agreed. I think 7th is a great result for Prado.

Jett still seems a little bummed/rocked by the whole Mirtl video thing. Hope he gets back to his chirpy self

Hunter Lawrence had a shoulder injury and surgery and hasn't been back riding as long. His was ligament damage too. Hunter Lawrence is an elite rider  of course but Prado is someone I've watched since he was a teenager, a prodigal talent out of the gate held in much higher regard. This performance is unacceptable

I like Jett but I really hope we're not in for a holeshot and 10 second win summer from him.  It's just so boring.

However, this is easily Jett's best track and probably Eli's worst so we'll see what happens in a week or two.

Chase...yeesh, that was not the way to start the series.  Can't really imagine what could have happened in one lap to make him toss his goggles.

Cooper was impressive.

Hunter, meh.  Not great but not remotely bad.

I think it's pretty clear who are the lead group; Jett, Hunter, Tomac, Cooper, Sexton (if he's okay).  We'll see if Prado can turn it up throughout the season.  Clearly no one else is going to have anything for the lead guys unless something really silly happens.

Oh well, one moto down, 21 to go.

When I read "fresh off wrist injury" I didn't think he would race the first round and beat Prado, that's pretty good

Possibly a hot take but while Prado's great and a 2X MXGP champ, I never felt like he had the raw speed of a young Cairoli or Herlings tbh. An incredible talent but not generational on their level imo

He wins by getting great starts, putting in consistently strong laps, and not riding over his head. When he isn't feeling it, he rarely pushes and risks a wreck, and he's never been massively comfortable pushing outside of his comfort zone. Personally I don't think I'll make my mind up on how he's doing until about the midway point of the season when he begins to find his comfort zone. I imagine he'll do better on tracks like Unadilla, Washougal, Southwick, Ironman

Chase crash seems like he got on throttle and bike just revs and he lunged forward expecting acceleration. Would think they'd be in high enough gear to not be flirting with neutral there but I have no idea?

Pretty much my thoughts exactly. I will say that I see Eli and Chase getting better. But they have a hole to dig out of after just one moto.

I think fair enough to say he's a little off those 2. They probably make up the top 3 all time euros with Everts. But I do think he is the talent of his generation in MXGP. An elite professional at the front of the field basically right out the gate

I think his doc told him there was some loose screws and an unattached piece of bone.  Option was to reattach the plate and bone or remove both and see how it goes.  It goes pretty good.😉
