The guy turns his swingarm into Swiss cheese, cuts 6lbs and apparently hasn't broken it yet even with big drop and hrs in the Dez

Turning parts into Swiss cheese isn’t new and no professional rider would dare run something as stupid as that.

There’s a pretty good drama thread about drilling holes in the frame on here, maybe go check that out.

A weight reduction exercise ? .. or an IQ test ?
You decide.

I guess it does illustrate just how hilariously overbuilt modern bikes are for the kind of forces the average amateur puts on 'em.

Here's another one for you:

Remove every third spoke in both wheels, and you can lose significant unsprung and rotating weight.  😉

It would explode when he dropped the clutch

And those formed holes with the lips are significantly stronger than if it were a piece of flat plate with holes drilled in it.

It feels like we're back in the '70s with people breaking out their drill bits and going to town (please don't bring back the lapels and leisure suits, too). Heck, why not just make the frame out of window screening or expanded metal to save the time of removing the material if you want mostly holes? If they want to save some real weight they can remove that big old head filled with a cam spinning at 2 mil RPM, a chain, sprocket and valvetrain and replace them with a single piece of aluminum with a dome formed in it. 😉

Was that the Swap Moto and Ride Engineering test bike drama? That shit was gold on pulp.

It may seem like little holes are a good idea, but they are actually worse for causing stress concentrations and eventually fatigue cracking than big windows or holes.

That said, the bottom and top face should be under the most stress and bending moments, so i would be keeping an eye on the ones close or on those sides and not the middle.  It does look kind of cool with the lights inside at night too

Anyone remember that Iranian guy on the old ZX10R forum who made square holes in his frame to aid in airflow to the throttle bodies? That whole thread was gold.

I've seen a swingarm break without the help. I'm good.

On another note, swingarms arent that thick, maybe do more uniformed holes and gusset them with some tubing.

I knew a dude who thought he was smart. He drilled holes in his 2008 KX 250's frame to try give it more flex  Well, he got real smart one day and put some holes "strategically placed" in his bottom triple clamp seeking even more flex.

A bunch of us warned him that it was madness and that he shouldn't be riding that clamp. By the time we saw what he had done he had put around 4 hrs on his back yard modification.

We warned him and we were scoffed at. He had ridden the bike a bunch and claimed the flex was awesome and it ain't gonna break.

I got a call one Sunday from a mate to tell me that Freddy go hurt rather badly when the clamp broke. The dude is a idiot and learnt the hard way.

There are some pictures floating around which I'll search for.

The dude drilling his swingarm pretty much falls in the same category. Why waste a perfectly good swing arm whilst seriously compromising safety??

Don’t be stupid. Going on a diet is the most effective weight reduction in any motor sport.

I learned the other day RC had magnesium carburetors. Just wild.

I'm not a fan of 3d printing but the "AI generated" organic looking structural shapes are pretty cool. Something to it there.

Sometimes it take a village. 👍

It could be worse - you could be like me: I keep trying to come down with Alzheimer's... but I keep forgetting I have it.

Talk about stupid! 😁

There is peak load capacity and then there is fatigue life.
