I know it sounds strange posting this on a moto forum but here we are. I’ve been riding for most of my life and did some low level racing here and there, nothing to serious but the last few years I’ve been wondering if I should be done riding. The thought of injuries and all the money spent doesn’t sit well with me anymore. I’ve switched over to a dual sport but I rarely ride that to. So the question is, when did you guys know you were done ?

I still ride 2 or 3 times a month, figure Ill quit when i dont enjoy it anymore. Regardless im gonna spend money on a hobby, and figure im more likely to be hurt in a car accident.

Sounds like your done, great thing is you can always come back if you want.

I’ve walked away twice. First time in my mid 20”s , had been at it hard for 15 years and got bit by the jet ski bug. Raced them  for 10 years then came back. Most recently 2 years ago, I was 55. My boy is really in to it racing schoolboy 1 and 2 stroke and is simply sucking up the budget. I’ve had my time in the sun , now it’s his turn. I still ride now and then and enjoy it, but I know the love affair is over , and I’m ok with it. If you have been at it your hole life it can be difficult to deal with, but if your feeling the way you are, it’s time to step back. The sport will always be there if wanna come back , so you always have options.
Good luck

I don't like to think about this, but it may be sooner than later. As I get older and become more aware of my mortality, I realize I'm super lucky for racing as long as I have with minimal injuries. However, going to ride / race feels almost like a chore now for me. Over the years, I have lost all my riding buddies to life and general shifts in interests, so I really don't have anybody to ride with and that truly takes some of the joy out of it for me. I also finally got my class M license later in life and feel like I almost enjoy street riding more because it's just a matter of going into the garage and off I go. I will lament and rue the day I sell my 250f though... but that's life I suppose.

When the kids got old enough to notice I was gone half a day and old enough to have their own hobbies that matter to them.

I miss riding. But I enjoy watching my girl cheer and my son play baseball more than I miss riding. I’ve just focused the energy into their hobbies. It’s just as rewarding to watch them and help them get better at what they enjoy, anyway.

I’m almost 50, and have taken several breaks due to injury. Each time I come back I’m slower and my satisfaction isn’t as high. But I still find some enjoyment in riding. I’d say if you don’t enjoy it, it’s time to reconsider. Most of my lack of enjoyment is from lack of seat time not from riding itself.

I got an EMTB, and before I knew it I wasn't even riding the dirtbike anymore. Easier to maintain and clean, takes 2 minutes to get it ready. Really social in pack rides and still gets the adrenaline going doing big gap jumps and super steep tech trails.

Happened to me in 2013.  Was an on  - off section of a track and I tried to clear the entire thing.  When I woke up I did not know where me, my bike or my helment was.  I couldn't see when I opened my eyes and broke my scapula.  Drove myself to an er and later sold my bike.

3 years later I bought a yz250 because it was a good deal and why not.  That was 8 years ago and the only thing I changed was I moved to the woods.

Motorcycles is in my blood.  I can't quit.

When I hit a sqared edged g-out while sitting down and felt my spine tingle from my tailbone to my mid shouders. Scared the shit out of me. That was after years of lower back problems

I more worry about the day I am too old or not physically capable of riding…No reason to quit. The money part- who cares it’s really not that expensive, it’ll get pissed away somewhere else..no?

This is largely my story too. Tomorrow I’m going out on a short street ride on country roads with a friend to a vintage motorcycle meet. When I get home, my ass might be sore, but I won’t have clean 20 pounds of mud off a dirt bike. At 64, I’m fine with being a spectator of MX, but I also reserve the right to pick up a dirtbike again in the future.

When it was a perfect day and I just couldn’t be bothered to go, after 17 years I was burnt out.

I was talking to one of my riding buddies who is 83 and he told me about his ride this week with a 73 year old and meeting an 88 year old riding by himself on the trails (we don't Moto anymore even though I am early 60s). If you keep riding, always be aware of safety first and knowing your limitations.

I've given up riding 3 times in the last 50 years.  Each time I eventually come back when I get too bored with other hobbies!

I've just come to that realization this fall, that I'm done, at least for now. I always rode trails, but lived in the country. Now in the city suburbs for years, it's a royal pain to get out to ride, and haven't met anyone who rides the way I do (have a friend who has a group, but they ride 30 mins, stop and shoot the shit for 30 mins, play in mudholes, all with 4 wheelers), and the bike hasn't moved in 3 years. Add young kids and there's not much time either.

Main thing for me was herniating a disc before Xmas. I'm still recovering, and it's got me worried about my next get off and injuring it again. So putting the bike/gear for sale soon.

Riding was always my escape, so not saying never again, but a break for a while. I am thinking of using the money from the sale for an eMTB though 😁

2 years ago at 66 years old I crashed on a jump and ended up in the er with a compound fracture of my tib/fib and a broken bone in my foot. After surgery it was 8 weeks non weight bearing.

After about a month and much thought, I deicded I was done with riding and sticking to mountain biking. I put my 21 Kawi 250, 23 Husky 125 and enclosed trailer up for sale. Well, the trailer and KX sold quickly, but then I started having thoughts I might want to ride again. Ughh

So I kept the 125 and started back slow, riding trails with some retired buddies. I really enjoyed the trails but still wasn't over my love for mx. Now we all ride both mx and trails but none of us do the big jumps anymore, and just enjoy riding and hanging out together.

I just sold the 125 and bought a new 25 KX 250X from my brothers dealership and I'm looking forward to riding it. At this point I'll keep riding until I can't.

Sorry for the long post, but I guess my point is, even when you think you're done you might not be. lol

I’ll quit when I die.  I now live in a place where the riding season is only 8 months out of the year.  I’ve tried everything, but I spend all 4 months just waiting to get back on the gate in the spring.  In the summer when my wife makes me take the boat out on weekends, I just sit there wishing I was racing instead.

I haven’t been on the dirt in probably 7 years or more , honestly lost count. I have a couple of street bikes and ride them when the weather permits, last year was just to work and back. I used to ride a lot more , but once covid hit obviously didn’t ride much during that mess. Funny thing is ,even though its been years since I’ve been on the dirt, in my mind I still consider myself a rider…. ( Goofy I know!) Honestly my knees aren’t great and that ,more than anything keeps me from riding on dirt . I’ll be 65 in September….😳 I guess I didn’t really answer your question……lol

i'll have to get back to you on that, 59 and been riding my entire life. I ride at least once a week and just bought another bike, No plans to sit around and watch paint dry. Riding keeps me healthy and sharp. Balance and fit. Not stopping! Good luck whatever your decision!

No plans of stopping for me.  I'm 54 now and fully plan to ride into my 80s with a goal of riding at +90 years old.  It's an addiction to me.  But I train/work out throughout the week just for the purpose of being able to ride on the weekends.

Couple years behind you but yeah, this ^^^^ although I didn’t get my own bike until I was 21.  34 years in and still very much look forward to every weekend ride.

Same. I plan on racing 50+ at Loretta’s and 60+ at World Vets one day. I saw Mr Boyesen racing 60+ one year and decided that’s gonna be me one day. I’ll ride as long as I physically can, till I’m gone.

I was racing Pro back in England- British 250/500 nationals - and got to a point where if I was going to continue to improve I’d need a lot more money ( extra bikes, spares, mechanic, bigger race truck, training in Belgium & holland etc etc ) there was no way I could find the money I figured I’d need and I wasn’t interested in just continuing racing without seeing consistent progress in my riding so I quit at the end of 1992 and didn’t look at another moto related anything for about 10 years.

Got in to road cycling in ‘93 spent a few seasons racing in France. Way cheaper but goddamn that shit was brutally hard.

I realized I didn't have it in me to stay in shape for riding anymore and I was really scared of getting hurt. I kept riding a little but once that feeling really crept in I decided that was it. Getting old sucks!

Did you have some special hip replacement.  I know several guys that had their hips replaced and have been released by their Dr. to ride, same with knees.

Everyone is done when their wife decides she has had enough of spending all that time in the hospital with you, but the getting bathed by her is kinda nice 😂
