That's going to make the trip to the mailbox a lot less exciting. With all the other publications being monthly's my chance of just finding bills just went up dramatically.

I also wrote some local race reports for CN

For some of you youngin's, there was a time before this interweb thingy, where we had to wait a week to get the race results from CN for the Nationals or SX, and when CN arrived in the mailbox, it was exciting, like we do today listening or watching it live....because that's as close to live as we could get...a week later

Wow, that's what kept me going back in the day. I remember the following the Bast boys too and the Friday night 1/2 Mile from Ascot. Back in college I waited every week to see if Ake would keep the TransAMA string going. End of an era.

Anyone else remember the Red and White Cycle News painter's hats in the early 70's? I think they were a buck. This was before the moto industry discovered the "casual wear" market. It was the one thing you could wear that identified you as a motohead.

Cycle News was like a ritual for serious fans pre-web. It took months for the mags to report on major races, if they reported at all, and the coverage was usually poor. If you wanted GP coverage it was even longer. Plus the weekly format allowed them to drill down deeper and give content you could not get, more interviews, less popular race series, niche motorcycles. I used to have a bunch customers come in to the shop I worked at end of week just to get it. It is hard to describe how important it was, how respected, and how woven through everything motorcycling it was.

I remember hearing stories about the long-time editor, a hardcore old school reporter type (name?) that ran the thing. Supposedly he was quite gruff, but also ended up teaching much of the current motojournos how to do things. Jonnum, Maeda, Carruthers, DC I think, many others. Crazy stories about some pre fax machine device they used to transmit copy over the phone. Wish I could remember.

It was such an institution, so much more than a magazine. Like a connection to the sport and a badge of being a serious rider. This is a sad day for motorcycling.

I remember sending my World Enduro stories from the local village, usually on some old fax machine that didn't really work that well and then shooting the film off in the post.

Times have changed a lot and as sad as it is Cycle News is history due to progress.

I loved Cycle News for the amount of different motorsports it ran, from Speedway, Enduro, MotoGP, Superbike, Motocross, Supercross, you name it they ran it.

Some great people also passed through their doors.

I don't really keep any of the magazines that I wrote stories in but you know what? The half dozen times that I wrote the back page article was super cool and I have all those issues. Because I remember, as a kid, I would go back there and read Henry Ray Abrams eviscerate someone or some organization.

Although my stuff was never as good, it's a source of pride that I got printed in there. Kit Palmer was, and always is, the man. Great dude right there.

I gave up on Cycle News when they stopped printing the local races and finishes.Everybody wanted to see who finished what race and where that for me was the #1 reason for buying it.
When that stopped I knew they were done.

As much as this sucks for motocross fans, think how bad this will be for sports like flattrack, desert racing, speedway, and even GNCC. This is really the only magazine that covers these sports.

I used to hassle my mom in 1970 to head over to Karls Motors on Fridays to get CN. I had every issue from then through the mid 80's, and still have many stashed in a trunk. It remained one of the few places to consistently get true critical journalism. Sorry to hear this.

one of the best things in my childhood was cycle news. living in canada, it was my only source for up to the week sx, mx, flat track, roadace and those cool regional reports.

Sad What a shame......That ever shop I worked at come Tuesday......used to be waiting for the post man to deliver the latest issues.......then snagged one and off to the library!

Landed a wrenching job for Hammerin Hank Moree from CN. While visiting my son at Christmas in Ilinois I drove 30 miles to pick up the latest issue.......the shop offered me a job.

Wow it is sad that Cycle News has folded. It was my connection also, up to date info in the day.
We used to go to CM, Irwindale in the week whenever possible. Your dad and uncle were fast, never out of contention. We used to sit on the corners and would take plexiglass shields to block the roost. Mine was an old boat windshield.

When I first got into moto, even before I raced myself, I can remember going to my buddy"s place (he subscribed) every tuesday to find out who won the races. If Cycle News was late arriving it crushed me. And the first time I ever had my picture published in a magazine was alongside some local race results in the back. Still have that issue, along with every single CN I ever got, but sadly I haven't subscribed in a very long time. I guess it's guys like me who are to blame....

i can still remember reading the article about when i beat a lot of big Cali names at a Lorettas Qualifier here in utah in the cycle news.

back when they were still large format and all black and white newsprint I used to lay out 2 or 3 on top of my washer and dryer to soak up oil when rebuilding forks. worked great!
