I did hear Mathes say his spinal cord is intact on the Racer X post race review podcast he just dropped
I dont have the words. I want to say that reading this has, "ruined my day"...but that is a bit of an understatement when compared to Jerry.
Then there is “hope” as always it’s the hope that can kill you. But I am hopeful for Jerry and is his journey ahead. I was always a fan of his, and somehow it seems fitting for the guy who is our moto form an old as CR250 showing everyone up to now. I believe Keefer said it, but the boys who have been through the shit like this (Button, Fonseca, Mearaux, Nelson, Robbin) I know I am missing some but these boys are the ones with the real resilience
Every time someone gets paralyzed it’s all I think about for weeks and months. It just tears me up. When my dad started racing in the 70’s he had a few friends that got paralyzed, one of them ended up rolling himself out into traffic. Really messed my dad up for awhile. He didn’t race for a bit after that. Eventually he got back into it. When I had my first big crash at 10 he pulled me from MX and made me race BMX for a few years. Eventually he bought me another bike when I was 14. This stuff stays with you.

This was me when DB got hurt. Completely triggered because I knew DB. Sold everything, completely out of the sport for 15 years after living the sport for the previous 15. Didn't pick up a magazine or watch any races on TV. Cold turkey DONE.
Then I got a serious cancer scare at age 40. Did a year of chemo. Decided that if I was gonna go out, I was gonna do it on my terms. Got back into vintage racing...which led to buying a modern bike. Been racing again for 25 years. Found out the part I missed wasn't on the track. It was in the pits and in the garage.
Hoping for the best for Jerry. He's an everyman's hero with his story.
Just now catching up to this. My heart sinks every time this happens. Prayers to Jerry and his family! 🙏
This sport really sucks at times
Couldn't find the words and still cant, just hoping for the best possible outcome for Jerry and all involved.
I really don't know enough about these injuries, but if that's the case... recovery is technically possible?
Miracles do happen. Paul Burnett (national #220 in the 70s) broke his neck C6/C7 in 95 at a vintage race. He woke up a quad and figured that was it. A few weeks later his surgeon said he'd like to try one more thing. They went in through his throat and did something and restored motor control to the extremities. There are lingering issues, for sure. But you'd probably not notice it just seeing him around.
I also hit the ground hard in 2016. My legs didn't work right after the crash. Fortunately, they came back in a few minutes. T6 & T10 compression fractures, L2 burst fracture, 12 hour surgery. I know first hand that the body continues to heal years after an injury. It took almost two years before I could pee on my own. And then, one day, boom, it was working again! I'm just about 100% functional. Some numbness here and there. But every step is a blessing.
Prayers for Jerry Robin and his family. I can't imagine what he must be going through right now.
Praying for you Jerry, praying for you mind 🙏🙏🙏🙏

When I was 14 I overjumped and landed on my head neck area and broke T3-T5 with the pieces pressing into my spinal cord and had total movement and feeling before surgery. During surgery I had an infarction which is basically a stroke in your spinal cord. I woke up from surgery and couldn't move from the waist down and couldn't feel anything on my left side. They fused all three vertebrae and since T4 was shattered they replaced it with a cadaver femur they formed into a vertebrae.
I was told I would be like this forever or a very small chance I could get a small amount of feeling back, I had pretty much came to terms with this which was weird as a 14 year old and probably easier to accept since you don't really know what that means in the big picture. I started rehab and somehow a month later I was sent home walking with a walker.
I still have some nerve issues and my left leg is a bit smaller and struggle a bit with fine motor stuff but id say 95% normal, I am 31 now and started riding and racing off-road a few years ago again and its not something I take for granted anymore. My dad always talks about how I cried when we had the talk that I'm not going to be racing motocross again but not that I may not walk again.
When I hear about guys getting paralyzed it always has an effect on me and it reminds me how lucky I was, I listened to Jerrys Gypsy tales episode last week too so it was like I had just learned all about this guy. I really hope he gets healthy and happy whatever that may look like for him in the future.
When something bad like this happens to a moto guy do any of the former moto guys that have been through this reach out (Button, Fonseca, Nelson, Bailey for example)? It seems like it would be something mentally helpful to have someone that's had the same experience of racer to chair for some support and how they've gotten through as not everyone can really understand what they're going through.
Yeah, very similar to Jimmy Button who was on a sight lap when his injury occurred. Some injuries are as bad as the crash was and others hardly look like anything happened. Scariest part about the sport
Pit Row
I believe a lot of them do. However, I remember watching a video on one of the guys who had recently been paralyzed, and at first he said he kept thinking how “he’s not like them” and “he won’t be like them.” Mostly because he didn’t want to accept what had happened.
I would say they know the best way to reach out and when to reach out after experiencing it first hand, but I wouldn’t be surprised to hear they wait a little bit.
I can’t imagine mentally processing something like this happening to me. All we can do as a moto community is send them love, pray, and donate as much as we can because we all now it can happen to any of us, pro or amateur.
I don’t think it really will effect how successful Jerry will be in the long term. The guy has grit, and weather he walks again or not, he will accomplish what he wants his life.
Look at Mitch Payton and what he has accomplished.
I was working on putting together an auction for Jerry all day yesterday, I 100% took the day off from the website to focus on that. Working on getting stuff up now.
Mike Young has primarily been dealing with Jerry and his wife on this and walking them through his experience and what comes next. I was at PC yesterday and Mitch Payton volunteered to talk to him as well.
It depends. For instance you can use me as an example because I am right in the middle of them boys. I bursted my T10 which is belly button level and basically dick/ball/bladder function area. Anything above T10 the higher the injury line. In this case, I kinked my cord and it was straightened with bone fragment removal much like jerry. This happened in 2020. Since then I have a ton of pressure and feeling (not like normal, but much more than paralysis) feel chills, heat, vibrations, but I have no motor function.
Imagine the spinal cord as a highway going both ways. On one side is motor function nerves, and on the other is sensory. Pending on the nerves that were damaged via injury and swelling you can recover something. Rehab, stem cell, rehab, rehab rehab. It is not an easy road by any stretch. Some of the boys are older, mine is more recent so I am fortunate in that regard. RIP Scottie. It can happen but it is very different from person to person

Keep it up, fund is at $70k!
That's awesome that Mike is helping them. He's a great guy and was a gnarly rider. I remember him back in 89 showing up at San Diego on a Cagiva 125 He beat Lamson and a very young MC that night -he got 7th.
fuck man, this is heartbreaking for Jerry and his family. i can not imagine what they are going through, i sincerely hope the absolute best for him.
PB crushed his T5 and it's amazing to me that his outcome was not worse. really makes you stop and think. i've had a lot of bad crashes that i shouldn't have walked away from and i thank my lucky stars that i'm still able to live my life the way i always have.
best wishes to Jerry
Man PB last one scared me a bit until the movement. Same with RC STL 06, to this day I have zero idea how that man didn’t get paralyzed that night. Pretty wild how little ones can get you like Nelson and big ones you escape.
Let's be honest, this sport isn't worth it unless you're one of the handful of guys making life changing money and setting your family up for a nice future. I came to this conclusion in 2017 and haven't thrown my leg over a dirt bike since. I respect everyone's individual decision and would never try to argue that my opinion is the right one, it's just how I feel and it was right for me.
All the best to Jerry and his family. Holding out for a full recovery.
I don't think that's fair to say, if you aren't making a living doing it you should ride more within your means and only push yourself when you are comfortable and the consequences aren't very high. 90% percent of people I see riding on the weekends will benefit much more by perfecting their shitty corner technique which is the safest thing to practice, than they will be just pushing themselves to go faster over the jumps and straights.
That's why SX is so gnarly obviously Jerry wasn't riding over his head and the smallest of mistakes have the biggest consequences. I mean I've went to put my foot back on the peg and hit the back brake or accidentally shifted down tons of times.
Prayers for Jerry for sure. Unfortunately life itself is dangerous, yeah we make choices like riding dirtbikes increase some risk, but for the folks who stop riding due to the risk, what else do you stop doing to reduce risk, do we stop MTB, driving cars, eating pizza, drinking beer? Were focused on MX/SX, but look around, people get hurt in a ton of differen ways.
Regardless, prayers to Jerry and the thousands of others who suffered life chamging injuries last week.
