Might want to find a form where people actually ride.
Depends the quality of the track but 1 hour isn’t very far. 2-4 hours is where the real decision making comes in
This. My limit is being able to make it there and back within the day comfortably. This is about 2 hours for me
I have a sleep setup in the car so I can travel 3-5 hours the evening before, wake up, ride, and the drive home is less miserable because it wasn’t preceded by the drive there. Also it is nice to go get alone and read and relax and unplug the night before. This would be tough if you had a family though.
The answer to the question is that my driving is proportional to the quality of the track combined with the way it’s run. These places that run a tight riding “class schedule” all day get none of my dollars.

2 hours and i've got several selections. 1 hour....2 tracks that are open to the public.
For decades I drove 2 1/2 hours one way to Dania twice a week, 2 hours to Thundercross and just over an hour to Seminole 2 days while it was around. Then raced every Florida series and drove up to 6 hours away on the weekends. Didn't miss many weeks during that time. Yes I rode a lot. Raced 72 motos in 12 weeks regularly. I'll drive anywhere. Would drive 3 hours at 3 am on Friday to surf Sebastian when ever there was no race. I drive an hour plus to my farm now most days.
Not track, but I typically drive about 120 miles each way to ride some killer single track twice a month. The drive sucks, but its the best riding spot I currently have.
The local track for me is luckily only 30 minutes away. But, it’s becoming open less & less each year. Most of the time we have to drive a minimum 1.5hrs to the next place or sometimes 3hrs. Seems like any direction we go 3hrs we have a pretty good selection of tracks to ride at. Northwest OH by the way
Probably 2 hours, anything above that would become a once every couple months kinda thing, but the best days are when I drive a couple hours to a track I haven’t been to yet. Extremely thankful Washington has a decent amount of tracks
If it's more than an hour it's definitely not local.
Next to my back yard I only have one other that's not an hour + away
2hrs to track in morning, 3+ (traffic) back in afternoon. Listen to RDL or MXGP broadcast to pass the time. Marysville Estreet / MMX slightly more, Hangtown Sacramento slightly less.
Where I live is great for road/mountain biking during the week, so I'm OK with it.
1-11/2 then it’s a hard decision. It depends on what part of the country too.
2 hours, but I do the 3 hour trek to southwick and budds every now and then.
I have always been fortunate to have places to ride within 30-45 minutes….but when I get tired of riding the same spots I have no problem driving 2-3 hrs for quality tracks….
I drove 4 hours south last Saturday to be able to ride. Left at 6. Got home just after 7. Would have made the first 250 heat race if not for dropping my riding buddy off.
I found when I lived over an hour and a half from my nearest tracks that I’d only go once every 1-2 months. When I lived a rock throw from 3 diff tracks I was going every week, sometimes twice a week
Western Washington folks drive 4 hours to Horn Rapids in order to ride all winter. I did it every weekend.
Pit Row
This also depends on what you call "local". To me local isn't more than an hour. But I will drive past a crappy track to get to a good track every single time.
In the South West US 4 hour plus drives are normal for a race weekend.
Being in northern AZ I have no choice but to drive 2-3 hours to the few tracks that we have left.
1 track within 30 minutes here, 2 others within 90 minutes and another 2 within 2 hours. Anything past 90 minutes and I’m starting to lose interest in making that trip more than about once a month. Probably doesn’t help that the closest track is the best out of the 5 to choose from
My closest public track is 2.5 hours but it’s pretty bad, Hangtown and all the good NorCal tracks are 4-5 hours and I do that twice a month at least in the winter when my house is too wet to ride. I’m golden from April-Oct with a 2:40 second lap track at home but I do still make that drive for races then too. Pretty much do like 40,000 miles a year for moto.
I'm fortunate enough to have plenty of tracks within an hour, closest local track is a 20 minute drive. I'm based near Milan, in Italy. However, I happily drive 2/2.5 hours to get to more technical and hilly tracks and for races.
My closest track is 1 hour and 15 minutes away. Most of the tracks I ride are just over 2 hours away. Hard to believe that the racing capital of the country (Indy) is such a desert for motocross.
Utah/Wyoming/Idaho folks drive 5+ hours, one-way, to ride Mesquite in the winter.
For weeknight after work practice I am willing to drive around 45minutes. I can go into work early, leave around 3, be to a track and ready to ride around 4, which still gives me 4 hours at the track until they close around 8. Its a busy day with work but worth it to get in a Tuesday or Wednesday evening practice.
For a weekend practice day I'm willing to drive around 2 or 3 hours, its not to bad to head out early, get in a great day of riding and still be home to have an evening for whatever else might be going on.
For a full race weekend around 4hrs is my limit most of the time. Anything more and I end up being home Sunday night after 9pm. Then when you add in any unloading or cleaning it just gets to late for my old ass. I do make a couple exceptions to this each year for a couple tracks I really enjoy.
I have 7 MX tracks to choose from all ranging from exactly 2 hours away to 2 hours and 30 minutes.
Kind of good because that gives me lots of choices, but also shitty because I don’t have any “local” tracks.
I live in a rural area on the east coast too so you’d think there would be one or two local tracks around here. My plan is to just build my own in a couple years for when I don’t feel like driving really far.
The closest track to me by mileage is Cal City MX, which is still 2'ish hours one way. Finally went out there this past Sunday and it was awesome, great dirt, great prep, safe jumps, and they kept the moisture in it pretty well for a seasonably warm day. Everything else is closer to 3 hours other than Glen Helen, but week day trips are hard to pull off.
This has been my experience. I’ve drove many times 2-3 hours one way to a track for racing or practice. It would be 2 times a month maybe. When a track opened up on the outside of town I was riding weekends and weekdays.
Post a reply to: How far would you drive for your local track?
