Probably a dumb question that I should know the answer to, but why do we not have a USGP anymore?
Probably a dumb question that I should know the answer to, but why do we not have a USGP anymore?
I don't know the reasons, nor do I even follow the GPs, but my guess is that Luongo makes more money by not having one.
That would be my guess, I don't think too many of them were very well attended.
Of course that doesn't stop them from holding races in random ass countries around the world but I don't think the US Governement is willing to cut a check like those places are.
At least we have MXDN, thats probably all we can hope for
Because the last few ones we had there were no fans and no US based riders....the only one that made money was the godfather....

because bugger all people showed up to watch at Glen Helen when they had it,
and the costs involved does not make it worth it for the promotor,
there were talks of a combine mxgp/ US Nationals round. I bet that's a hard sell to the teams though.
Do GP's ever do that in other countries?
No, but no other countries nationals are comparable to the us ones either ,
Why would that be a hard sell to the teams? Do you mean the GP teams or US teams? If they did at a place on the East Coast of the US the travel would not be too bad for all of the Europe based teams compared to getting to China, Indonesia, Argentina, Australia, etc. Although I guess for the privateer US teams many of them would show up and then not make it into the motos which would be a bummer. I am probably missing something.
Red Bud comes to mind (though it has had its fair share of big events the last few years). A lot of non-stop flights into Chicago from anywhere in Europe and the facility is huge
A GP/AMA combo race would be massively attended. A bit like a mini MXdN…. But the promotion would have to split the $$ and it feels like both sides are too greedy to do that.
I’d be there.
The USGP's at Unadilla were great back in the '80s and early '90's.
there would be a heap to work out, with broadcast deals, steaming deals, team travel, MXGP teams having guaranteed starting spots etc, all having conflicts between a huge amount of organisations,
it would be epic to see happen,
MXGP Teams have a "deal" with the series that they automatically get into every round right?
How many riders would that be?
While I agree it’s not comparable to US nationals I’m pretty sure the Argentina round is incorporated into the national series to boost gate numbers and crowd. Not exactly apples to apples but it has been done.
Yes, the Argentinian round was just combined with a Latin championship which is why it had full gates.
US Riders are hired to ride 31 events, SX, MX, SMX. They are hired to ride any other events and it would add cost to the teams who hire the riders to attend more events. The American crowd does not show up for GP events as our top riders are not there as explained above. Plus, the rider already race too many races and value their time off and do not want other events unless paid very well to do so, such as Paris SX, etc. MXGP would not pay anything.
Pit Row
Didn't TLD race the last one? I seem to remember Jessie Nelson winning a moto or maybe even the overall.
Yeah but what has been discussed is MXGP/National that would be held as one of the 11 races not an additional race.
Actually more talent than an MXDN. would be epic.
I remember the Carlsbad USGP was ginormous. …in the 70s and 80s. Used to go every year.
...casual American fans don't know or care about MXGP - No Americans in the series.
I've even spoken to team managers who don't know who races in MXGP and MX2.
Last GP's they held in California and Florida were sparsely attended, and there were Americans racing in those events.
Yes . Ben Townley won a moto too I think, but was torpedo by alessi in the other
2011 I believe
I went to one of the Glen Helen GPs and was lowkey ashamed that so many of my fellow Californian dirt bike fans decided they had better things to do that day.
As long as the GPs keep getting high six figures for the rights to host a GP by government travel bureaus, the US will be a struggle to financially make sense.
Even the Des Nation with the biggest crowd possible barely pencils out for most promoters.
I have been to quite a few USGP’s over the years and fan attendance is not great. Since the 90’s Tracks take a huge financial hit when holding a USGP.
Tracked used to have to suck it up and hold a GP before they could get a MXoN.
I would suspect that was why Charlotte speedway built the USGP track after tearing down the dirt track fences to build the larger GP track all over it. They wanted a MXoN.
I went and felt the opposite, didn't miss the giant crowd of partyers one bit.
When was there ever a requirement for a track to hold a USGP in order to get des Nations? Red Bud, Lakewood and Iron Man have never held a GP.
Edit: @scott_nz, decided to look it up on Racer X. Turns out it was 2015 when Jessie Nelson won, but that wasn't the last USGP. I totally forgot about Charlotte in 2016.
That would be absolutely awesome!
