post this in another thread

In all my years of racing and injuries I now know what level 9 and 10 pain is.

It has been posted in the non moto section before but for about 9 months I have been in excruciating pain and it was finally tracked down to being a L4 and L5 spinal cord pinch.

On Wednesday March 12th I will be having major back surgery. They are saying recovery time will be 4-8 weeks but with limited 5 lb weight lifting I expect be able to get back to shipping orders in roughly 1 or 2 weeks.

Due to this Moto Hose will be shut down after shipping out orders on Monday March 10th. For a short period of time.

Just tell them to slap a section of motohose around L4/L5. Should be sweet.

Hopefully they get it all figured out and your surgery is a success and you are pain free afterwards.

Is the problem with your back spinal stenosis? I had surgery about a year ago for spinal stenosis of L3, L4, and L5.

Long but here goes.

With my knee I have been dealing with pain for over 35 years till I did the total knee replacement almost 3 years ago. I have always had an extremely high resistance to pain so for me pain is more of a dull ake. With my knee Advil and Aleve were my friends for all those years. Over the years even with broken bones when ever a Doctor would ask me what level of pain I was in in a 1 to 10 scale I could never give a good answer but more of a answer of I dont know maybe a 1 or 2? Till they see the X-ray .

This pain was odd and moving from starting in my groin to right leg muscle not relaxing to shooting pain down my leg and changing muscles. Occasional it hit my left leg too. Getting up and moving processing orders helped some. Standing in one place for long really killed me too.

This has been mostly hurry up and wait going from Dr to Dr to Dr. We have an amazing massage therapist that has extensive training for working on pain and while Dr and meds didn’t get things going in the right direction with 1 massage and she could get me relief for 3 days. I was seeing her at least 1 or 2 times a week.

Might screw up the order or timing a little but It started slow with kind of an ake in my right groin like I had another kidney stone started. I have had 2 kidney stones removed in the previous 18 months. 1st one almost killed me with collapsing from sepsis. After taking a long 3 week trip out to Pueblo Colorado it had started before then and after getting back from that trip we Went to Budds Creek for the national and with all the walking around the track I had done it started getting worse. Couple weeks later With the playoff here in Charlotte 45 minutes from my house the pain had gotten so bad I literally could not get out of bed to go to the race. Getting out of bed was triggering it BAD !!!! Sleeping in bed was fine until getting up to about the 45 degree angle to sitting and boom and the day is triggered. Other than massage therapist the next Best thing I have done is stoped sleeping in a bed and sleeping in an electric recliner so I have help getting straight out of bed.

It kept getting a LOT worse and a week later I ended up barely able to walk into the emergency room doubled over in #9 pain. Was in a chair for the rest of the hospital emergency room visit. About 4 T hours getting X-rays and they couldn’t see anything wrong including all of the kidneys and other organs were fine. Because I thought it was my kidney They didn't look at my spine for anything. They sent me home with Here are some pain meds and muscle relaxers go home and see your Dr. Even a shot of morphine just took the bike out of the pain but it was still hurting bad.

Took a month before I could get into see a back Dr. at a practice that I had seen 7 years before about back pain that ended up being caused by a frozen big toe throwing everything out of alignment but thats another story that the massage therapist had fixed….. then 2 weeks to get into PT and every week in PT get a new exercise every time and PT made pain worse. 6 weeks PT was required by the dam insurance company. Another 2 weeks to get back into the back Dr only to find out he does not do surgery. He was a holistic Dr and a total wast of time and money. Another 2 weeks to get a MRI and another 2 weeks to see a back surgeon after Jan 1st and we had to change insurance since my wife had retired so checking in even though the Dr office told us beforehand we were in network we weren’t. This Dr was going to rip me open in the back and cut through all the muscles to cut out the canal and put a big cage and 2 screws in. Now out of network We had to pay the entire bill at a 20% discount right then or wait for insurance and pay more. $550 paid for that visit.

We Left there and my wife started searching for a in network back surgeon and with my wife on the phone she was able to get me straight in to see the surgeon. Even with the MRI this new back Dr did 2 more X-rays but these were done differently. One was Standing sideways looking up at the ceiling and another looking down at the floor. Those 2 simple X-rays clearly told the whole story! This Dr is going in from the front moving all the squishy stuff around then going in from the back to put in 2 screws to stabilize it. Mind you this appointment was on the day we were supposed to leave for our long 3 days drive to vegas for the MC trade show so we left that evening pushing to get past Atlanta.

Fast forward to now. And I can’t wait to be waking up from the anesthesia after surgery.

Hope the surgery goes well and You are back up and running quickly after!   I have had some run-ins with some pretty bad pain . Back pain has been the worst of all .  Happy for you that here is a way to fix it and  You found it.

Sucks that insurance often ends up in making stuff take forever and be a pain in the but.  I've seen it too with my own injuries and now with helping my mother .

Experience talking here. Try to do as much “pre-hab” as you can tolerate. It will really help get going post surgery.

I’m with you. I was hit by a falling tree while mounting biking in September. Spent a week inpatient and none of the meds touched the pain. Sent home with a walker, went to pt, was improving and then last week back in ER with more pain. L4 L5 tears. Being sent back to pt but worry this is just going to keep happening until it’s addressed surgically. Will be following your progress. Fast recovery.

Thank you everyone for your support I greatly appreciate it !

This has been extremely painful and difficult to get through. As a life time mechanic there have been some simple things like putting a trailer hitch on my Colorado that I have not been able to attempt and I am even taking it to have the oiled changed and tires rotated.

The motorcycle trade show a month ago I was so close to pulling the plug and bailing on it but getting the shot in my back breathed a little life back in me but I still had to have my wife carry the display in and out for me I honestly could not do it. Huge thank you to Engine Ice’s Scott for helping carry some in for me too.

Recovery time numbers are all over the place. Hospital stay is in the 1-4 day range depending on pain afterwards and others that have had this type of surgery are saying its going to be really bad for a couple days.

Good luck with surgery …. I have MRI scheduled for the 5th for what the ER PA thinks are probable L4 - 5 bulging disk. Symptoms  for past week, sudden onset with out a fall or crash or over doing it in the gym are:

From outer left hip socket, around to groin and down to knee though center of quad the most excruciating pain I have ever felt that made standing up or even taking a step bring a tear to my eye. That’s along with numbness in my inner left thigh from the knee back up through my “saddle area.” The overall pain has gone down and I can sort of shuffle walk almost upright now… but every once and while WHAM it hits and i go down. I have ZERO pain in my back lumbar area… none! I have Ortho Spine on thursday so I am hopeful since mine is trending in the right direction on its own … so far… fingers crossed!

Trying to standing up straight not bent over was definitely a huge problem for me too but once I would get moving and walking it helped. Working from home helps.

Sleeping in a recliner and getting the shot and taking meds for pain and muscle relaxer has helped me so much in get through this.

I haven’t seen our massage therapist since finally getting diagnosed but she helped relief that the DR and PT couldn’t. There was 1 muscle down the inside of my leg that was contracted and wouldn’t release and her working on that helped a lot in getting my back the straighten out. That HURT a LOT but it helped turn the corner. She is not an average massage therapist and has extensive training on this type of pain work.

By Sleeping in the recliner and not a bed was a game changer! 3 weeks in the RV sleeping in the bed was difficult and flared it up but getting back home and sleeping in the chair turned it around.

Well, didn’t get the news I was hoping for, The MRI Revealed degenerated discs (like a 65 to 70 year old and i’m 51) with herniation in L3-L4, L4-L5, and mild herniating L5-S1… they want to refer me to pain management already but insurance requires 6 -12 weeks of PT first. I was told pain management should help but after 1-2 years i should expect surgery to remove herniated portions and relieve pressure on the nerve roots at a minimum … but I am heading for spinal fusion within 5 years if I don’t go to gym, no mountain biking, or aggressive exercise to aggravate it… I said well I guess that’s what’s going to happen because I am not giving up cycling and riding … no way… my PTSD will become unbearable if I can’t ride!

Odd since they now know what is wrong but it is the same path

I went to see a back Dr and little did I know he was pain doctor (not surgeon ) that could do nothing and therapy made it worse. PT kept saying Strengthen your core is all they kept saying and that was obviously pulling it in the wrong direction for me. It was 6 weeks and pain was so bad I couldn’t even go in for the final 6th PT appointment.

My latest saga ….. last minute you have to go see a heart Dr so I went yesterday and even though the EKG that was done 2 weeks ago at the anesthesia pre operation exam (with all my surgeries over the years I have never had to do this before not even the total knee replacement 3 years ago) EKG showed everything was normal they wanted to do a 2nd EKG I asked them why  because it had just been done 2 weeks ago and was normal. The nurse said insurance would not pay for it if it had already been done so I said no do not do it again you already have it.

The heart Dr claimed they didn't have it and I asked her to check in my records and they did have it was right there on the screen and she did not even bother to open it.

Call this morning from the synesthesia office telling me that they were resending it a 2nd time.

Heat Dr then insisted that I do a stress test and took me out the checkout and they said were no available appointments until the 21st so they would have to cancel the surgery. I BLEW UP and said are you fucking kidding me??? I have been in excruciating pain for 9 months and you want to cancel the surgery??? 15 minutes later they found another location for the injection stress test. Not on the treadmill some kind of an injection stress test. That office visit was enough of a stress test!!!

So the morning before surgery they are doing a stress test . You think the report makes it to the heart Dr in time to to sign off?

My gut feeling if they will be canceling the surgery.

Did I ever mention that I HATE Doctors???

It always seems like a huge money grab with all the BS tests done where everything is always fine.
