250F Reliability 2021-2023 KX vs KTM

Looking to buy a second bike for a few of my friends and brother to ride when they are around. I want a KTM but all im finding are KXs. All of the KTMs I do find for a decent price have 60+ hours on them on the stock piston.

Have heard the 22 KX250s have valve and crank issues. Here is my question, for anyone who has had these year KX250s, how have they held up? How pervasive were these issues?

On the flip side, it seems you can ride these KTM 250s to 100 hours on a stock piston?...I dont feel safe putting myself or someone on a bike with that many hours on the top end but they do seem incredibly reliable.

My question: Would it be safer to go with a 2022 KX250 with less hours or a KTM of the same year with 60+ hours? thx

Also I guess - Did Kawasaki fix these problems from the 2022 on the 2023? Would it be safe to get a 23 KX250 with around 30 hours?

That’s a tough one because it depends so much on how the bike was ridden and maintained. I’d say that matters more than brand. I got 100 hours on a stock KTM piston but I’m old and slow and I kept the oil fresh and air filter clean. The person who bought my KTM got an excellent bike with lots of life in it. I have no experience with Kawasakis. But if you can find a vet ridden KTM that’s well maintained it’s probably going to be a pretty solid bike. If, on the other hand, it’s been constantly bounced off the rev limiter by a fast kid I’d stay away unless it’s been recently (and verifiably) rebuilt, regardless of brand.

Yeah thats sort of the exact predicament I am in lol. I was messaging back and forth on a 23 250sxf last night that has 109 hours on it but its an older guy who clearly knows what he is doing. But then I am looking at the same year KX250 with 20 hours for the same price thinking am I insane? lol

You’d think that the KX should be pretty safe with only 20 hours (assuming the hour meter is accurate) unless it’s been badly abused or service has been neglected completely or done wrong. That’s a difference of 90 hours. That’s a lot.

If I was looking at a 250f with over 100 hours on it, I’d be pricing an engine rebuild into the deal.  On top of that, unless things have changed, parts will be more expensive for the Austrian bike.

Get an rmz250. Those bikes are tanks. Plus you don’t have to worry about a battery dying if it’s not being ridden a lot.

We've had 18, 20, 22, and now a 24.5 Austrian bikes. 125s - 350s. As a Vet rider, I do a piston/timing chain at 100 hours on the 4T. For my fast son, 50 hours. We've put over 150 hours on a couple of them w/o any significant issues. After that, I worry about frame integrity. I've heard good and bad about the KXs but have no direct experience there. I'd not hesitate to buy a used KTM under 75 hours unless it's been flogged.

You're also looking at overhauling all of the linkages, bearings and all of that kind of stuff at that point.

Leftover 24 kx250s are 6k and new 25s are 7k

At those numbers new vs 30-130hrs used I know my answer.

Yeah for sure I 100% agree. In my head I value these bikes around $4k which is kind of where I want to spend on a used bike with this many hours. Seems like alot of these bikes have been posted for weeks if not months too the guys just dont want to let them go for cheaper.

This is my 2022 KTM 250 SXF. It has 109  hours.

It has been raced in 6 AMA pro nationals,  10- 20 amateur local races, and thousands of practice laps.

It has had 3 new pistons installed its entire life and cylinder has been cleaned up by a race shop. The motor  has never broken or even ran poorly.

It still gets ridden a couple times a month, and out of all the bikes I own this is probably my favorite because of the awesome 2019 - 2022 frame and handling.

I will never sell this bike, it has been incredibly reliable.

Kawasaki for the spring fork, you could find an older model kx250 I'm thinking 23 or 22 they came with kyb suspension. Bulletproof!

just buy a new KX250, buying a used bikes 9 out of 10 times you can add a G for maintenance items that have been neglected. Ive seen 20 hour bikes with seized steering stem and linkage bearings already. Buying used is almost never worth it

Local dealer was at about $6500 otd for a new 2025 KX250 this weekend. They are cheaper than an RMZ right now.

Yea but on the 25 kx you need to factor in a slip on at minimum

Drill some holes in the airbox and add 2 teeth to the rear sprocket. You’ll be fine. The airbox helps a ton!

yes.   We have two 2023 KX250's.....one is my son's and the other is my buddies.  My buddy has around 100 hours on his and hasn't touched anything.  Those KX's have underrated reliability.  The bike is very neutral handling as well.

23/24’ KX250’s were an improvement over the 21/22’s, and I still prefer those years to the 2025 redesign. If your riding friends are on the heavier side for 250F’s, stock Kawi and RMZ 250’s have the best ‘big-guy’ suspension packages (stock).

KTM side, still hard to beat a clean 2019-2022 with low hours. Find your favorite fork air pressure, set every ride, enjoy…

I have an obscene amount of hours (more than anyone has mentioned in this thread so far) on my KTM 250 and have never touched the motor. I'm not going to claim to be the fastest rider at the track, but it's definitely not been babied.

Modern day motors are way more durable than most people give them credit for.

He is buying a bike to loan out to people. I am sure the people getting to ride a bike for free are going to complain about the exhaust. The stock exhaust will be fine.

You’re right. What was I thinking?

Kx250’s go 100-150hrs on stock internals routinely and don’t have crank issues EVER….

Kawasaki can’t even figure out how to make a 450 crank last. Much less 250.

And I have 2) 350 sxf with 150 hours, 1)fc450 with 150 hrs, 1) sxf450 with 65 hrs so does that negate your experience? Of course not.

But I know what I've seen and heard locally and Kawis are not durable. And they sound like they're gonna blow up off the showroom floor. Granted, you won't find a cheaper new dirt bike than a Kawi. But they're affordable for a reason..... PS, I'm not a KTM fanboy. I love all dirtbikes. But I am a realist.

I just talked to my engine builder today to schedule a refresh on one of my 350s and he told me he probably wouldn't even have to replace valves because they just go forever. And he knows my goal is a refresh with another 150hr service interval in mind. You just don't see or hear of KTMs blowing up very often.

But to each their own.

Have not owned a kawi but had an 18 250xcf.  85 hours on that machine.  Only issue was the hose coming out of the fuel tank sprung a leak and the air fork at that time wasn't the greatest.  Rock solid other than that.  Ran strong when I sold it.

3/4/2025 8:26pm

I have owned multiple KTM350's and a couple KX250's now as well

Last year I put 100 hours on my 2024 KX250x, AA off-road type stuff. Motor didn't skip a beat. Have a 2025 now that I should have the same hours on it by end of the season. Did the same on a 2022 KX250 and 2023 KX450x.

I've also had over 200 hours on a 350 without opening the motor.

Maintenance and luck over everything else 😄
