Just wanted to show off my first custom painted helmet. I’m an auto body tech by trade that just so happens to kinda be able to use a spray gun…
I have always wanted a custom lid but could never afford one nor knew anyone that did it. I finally said screw it let me give it a go…. Zero plan in mind just winging it the whole way. Had to do a lot of trial and error as I was using water base color just because I had acess to it at work. Made a bunch of custom one off colors that were mixed from left over jobs and set sail…. There’s a ton of flake in the top that the camera just doesn’t pick up but it makes a bass boat look weak 😂. Overall a lot of time went into this thing between masking and sanding and re clearing. Had to do each color then clear and rinse repeat process x4. Total of 10 coats of clear on it so it’s deeeeeeeep. I learned a lot during this process and I know what I will do differently next go around.
Enjoy and don’t roast me too hard.

I bet that looks even better in person. I like the bass boat look.
Looks great. Good job
That looks killer! Even better that you did it yourself!
Very cool!

Exactly what I was thinking. Cool in pics, probably pops really well in person
Nice job
Not bad for your first one. Keep it up...fun stuff
Looks 10x better in person of course lol pictures don’t do it justice. Thanks everyone.
How did you get the effect in the black/bronze part of the helmet?
Way nicer than I could ever do.
Did it ad much weight?
That is straight black with a ton of gold pearl (not flake)…. It’s supposed to be a marbled look. Silver base, let it flash dry, hammer on the black super wet then dab with plastic to pull some black off…. Then I “misted” a light coat overtop to make the Pearl lay correctly.
Not sure honestly. I’m not fast enough to be able to tell and rarely get to ride anymore. I wore it on my snowmobile twice after I finished it and now it sits on the shelf until I get another bike 😂. I’m sure it is a bit heavier but it’s an older ATR-1 so not the lightest to begin with.
Are the pinstripes painted? Its a nice touch.
Pinstripe was added after because I thought it looked plain. It’s good ole 3m vinyl pinstripe. Stuff is so good I wish they still made it. Glad I have a nice stash of it. I could very easily re scuff the whole helmet and clear over the pin stripes but ehhh it’s good enough.
Very nice work!
Ok, I was actually going to ask if you used plastic film or something over wet paint. I could see it wasn't from regular spraying.
Great job. I know this takes time with all the colors, but it's something special to do it yourself. You probably saved a lot of money too😅
Looks awesome. I think you may have found a fun side gig.
Awesome Job!! Very clean looking design and I love the use and combos of marbled look and speckled paint effects.
I've attempted a few helmets on my own over the years as and its definitely a learning process and a nice job takes skill, time and patience.
If this is only your first helmet I think you hit a home run at your first at-bat! Nice looking job!
Pit Row
Ok, Troy Lee. Good job!
Looks sick, nice work! clean and simple
Looks damn good. Very clean, but the stripes and design give it style. That shade of blue is great.
Start painting some red bull helmets and selling them on the moto black market 🤓
Looks awesome! I think the talent of people that can paint helmets, cars, gas tanks is severely underrated.
