I think never being satisfied and always pushing/striving to be better is a good quality in most people, racers included.

As Metz once said “5th gear tapped wide, can’t lose”

I'm a Sexton fan but that sounds like an excuse because he couldnt beat jett this weekend. Because for weeks now hes been saying how good his bike is and how ccomfortable he has been. But now he blames the bike once jett comes back and beats him again

It could be a reason as they do struggle to get a bike for that specific series, but, even if he did it's not the problem, it because jet is faster, and Tomac is too, especially at that sort of track.

You are wrong. Reading this thread proves a lot of you guys don’t realise how close these guys are…. Skill, fitness etc etc. Bike set up is huge at this level, ktm hasn’t been dialled in for SX since the last gen frame, while his moto setup worked great for him they still have work to do getting him comfortable with Sx, (for those that don’t know a hugely different bike set up) it shouldn’t be that hard to comprehend. Now wether he can beat jett or eli once he’s comfortable is another story, but no need to discredit chase as if he’s just making excuses. I’d say hes pretty hard on himself and realistic, and expects the same from the team.

Great story, I fell asleep reading it, wait and see, chase will not beat Jet.........

True but sooner or later you might need to accept that you are chasing unicorns.

For a couple of years now Chase has been on two top brands factory teams that have ALL the resources in the world and if they can’t get him happy with the bike, who can?.

At some point Sexton might need to adapt and try to work his way in on a more neutral setting on the bike and adapt to that.

Sexton, KTM and Sextons future team (if he wants to jump ship after his current deal) will be chasing setup and Jett the rest of their careers.

JT & Weege was spot on in the Race X podcast and i think it was the first time i heard media people saying it, it might be just that Sexton is not as good as Jett Lawrence. No shame in that, considering that Lawrence is on track to become one of the best ever in the history of the sport.
We will hear a lot of bike setup talk because Sexton will almost always search for more the days when Jett is on the same track as him.

So Chase should just throw his hands up and say “oh well never be as good as jett might as well stop trying”? Jetts a freak no doubt but everyone can be beaten & chase ain’t so bad himself…. These guys are fuckin racers, let ‘em race, the mentality in here is crazy. I applaud chase for chasing settings and wanting more from the bike. It all trickles down to what we ride at the end of the day.

No one is really suggesting Chase should just give up.  Here is the question though - how long does he continue to pursue setup and bike improvements before realising that it doesn't really make any difference?  It's been over a year and three full seasons, with basically no change in the result.  DV said last year that Chase should forget about setup (within reason) and maybe try to see if he can improve his technique & speed to try and catch Jett.

No, he should not give up but after chasing settings for YEARS, (until Jett went out and Chase started winning) it might be something else he need to chase?.

Like not pushing the front so hard while wanting to ride super soft forks etc,

It could be that easy that the odd settings he demand out of a bike causes to much problem on other parts of the track.

A bike will always be a compromise no matter what and it might be upp to him at one time to change something with his riding to get the bike(S) to work better.

Hymas were asked this summer about his riding style that had changed a bit and he responded that the bike works better when he ride like he does now.

I can agree to an extent… if he can get the ktm to a sweet spot in sx as he has done in mx then I’m sure he can tweak his technique to suit.

Chase just needs to keep pressuring Jett and Jett will scatter himself all over the track again. Then we will listen to how “if Jett was there he Chase wouldnt have won blah blah blah”.

A healthy Eli and Chase with a little better bike setup will cause the crash and injury again. And we will hear it all again.

Maybe he’s working on technique as well? Do you know that he’s not? The more you test with a bike the more you learn about how they work.

Once again, trying to improve and leaving no stone unturned is a good quality. We are lucky he’s not just throwing his hands up and giving up.

Weird that people want him to. Guess that’s what separates the winners from the losers.

Chase has pressured Jett a fair bit and has ended up in the dirt himself far more times than Jett.  That’s a flawed strategy.

I guess I will take the troll bait.

Jett went 24-0 against Chase in 2023. Many of those races Chase was right there with him. Did he falter once? No

Jett won 2024 Supercross championship.

Jett made a mistake in an outdoor race once this year, which did lead to him being out of the series, but it was no pressure from Chase with those mistakes.

During that time, how many times has Chase been on the ground compared to Jett? I'm not a huge Jett fan, but stop acting as if Jett is crash prone. Jett has pressured Chase into more mistakes.

Jett crashed a lot in SX, more than Chase did

If you watch them both ride, and look at segment times, they are really comparable in speed and technique.

I know that they are chasing that bike when it’s setup for supercross, it doesn’t do a few things well, and turning is one of them.

With that said, I think the separation between them is between the ears, Jett is ridiculously confident, and Chase is a bit of a head case.

Chases own trainer told him to get out of his head and just learn to ride the damn bike that you have.

Well that doesn't align with SMX last year where Jett said they missed the mark on settings.

There isn't one rider in recent 10-15 years that could ride around a setup not being pretty much spot on. Not Dungey, not Stew, not even RC. Specially not last 10 years. That time went when 4-strokes entered.

Jett as also off in outdoors and he spoke about it. Specially forks, that they later went back to last years setup.

If there is one that maybe could be competitive, it's Jett. But he is also doing, statistic, that has never from what I know been seen in this sport. So can't really use him as benchmark. And again, he wasn't up to pair with the new fork or last years first SMX race.

Not one rider could ride around a less than perfect bike? Are you serious? What do you call THREE perfect MX seasons on these evil four-strokes?What...

Not one rider could ride around a less than perfect bike? Are you serious? What do you call THREE perfect MX seasons on these evil four-strokes?

What is your metric? If a guy wins motos on a bike that isn't perfect, what would you call that?

I'm a HUGE Sexton fan, but I think it's overwhelmingly mental with him. Jett has shown he can beat him, period. So Jett being on the gate changes things for Chase. There is no way it doesn't.

Is the bike perfect? No way. Is the bike good enough to beat Jett if Chase leaves the gate with the same confidence he has at the end of MX? I think so.

Bike setup, especially going from MX to SX suspension, is deeper than it seems. The chassis reacts dramatically different to SX suspension, so it's not just an A/B decision and run it. That, coupled with the Wonderkid back on the gate, and the fragile confidence/ego is at risk.

I feel for Chase, as RC and Stew said on the Mashup pod, he's up against an all-timer. He's already surpassed Windham. The kid went toe to toe with an outdoor legend in Tomac in 2022.

The fact we hold him to such a high standard is proof of how good he is. 99.9% of riders would be applauded for what Chase has done, but his potential is so high, he's criticized for being beat by a legend and a phenom this past Saturday.

The competition is to good, to not be "perfect" on setup. Again, Jett and Hunter had to dig out last years fork to be able to reach that level. We are talking about Honda factory team, that had to, against their will, use last years setting to secur wins.

But with perfect, i dont mean 100%. The only one i have seen being 100% perfect so tar in last ~10 years, it Tomac 2015 outdoors on the Honda. I dont think Jett would have had a chance looking at with how much Tomac was ahead of field. If Jett tried to go there, my guess is he would find things in setup that needed to be fixed. He was for sure not going to hang with Tomac 2015 with early 2024 setup.

So i think setup matters more than we give it credit to.

I wonder if KTM has tried making the throttle twist farther on the handle bars?... I dont know if many people know this insider secret but that makes the bike go faster.

Chase is his own biggest competitor. Its not the bike or the setup.

Outside of his 2020 lites title, chase has never won a championship without the person in the points lead getting hurt. He was unhappy on the Honda, now he’s unhappy at KTM. Maybe it’s time to invest in a sports psychologist.

Jett had never even raced this bike before in his life lol, theres no chance in hell hes completely comfortable on a brand new bike hes only had 3 weeks on. If anyone should say theyre not there on the bike yet it would be jett.

It isn't that new. It's basically what the team was doing to the frame of the 24 according to all the mags that have tested the bike.

Back in the day a lot of folks accused Windham of just being happy with 2nd and making his million bucks a year. Never really pushing to find that edge. Now we have a guy that actually wants to challenge a sure-fire all timer and is throwing the kitchen sink at it and we’re like “just give it up. Ride the bike and be happy with 2nd”.

Weird

And yet Chase will be cashing a big check and showing up at Pala 2025 with the big #1 on his KTM.

He can’t be all that bad…

Nobody is saying just be happy with second, their saying stop searching for settings you may never find.

Remember last year when AP said he was happy with the bike set-up and he was just able to practice technique? He was comfortable with were the bike was and he could just work on his craft, practice cornering, searching for multiple lines, working on his speed. Maybe Chase should try that, even RC said once you know what the bike will do, ride it accordingly, and at least you know how the bike will react, always searching may slow your progress because you can't just log laps and get fully comfortable.

I know that they are chasing that bike when it’s setup for supercross, it doesn’t do a few things well, and turning is one of them.

With that said, I think the separation between them is between the ears, Jett is ridiculously confident, and Chase is a bit of a head case.

Guys working in the pits at last year’s Charlotte playoff no one could get the bikes set up to work everywhere on the track. Stiff SX suspension did not work. Softer National suspension did not work. In between didn't work either.

For these playoff races the rider has to figure out which part of the track he does not want it to work in and deal with it.

The turning problem can well be that Chase runs his forks so soft outdoors (look at how they dive under braking and cornering) that when he get on a SX prepped fork with a hard setting he misses that dive that make a bike corner better.

And that’s one of those things that maybe it’s time for him to adapt to or work around instead of banging his head against the wall. Learn to ride with stiffer forks and practice cornering instead.

I remember the Peter Park episode with Gypsy and he said that chase demand things out of the bike that they can’t get out of it but if they could he would be unstopable or something like that.

But how much time can you waste on searching for those things while the time is running away from you as a rider?.

I heard he's demanding KTM to keep the front wheel from tucking.

Weird

Remember last year when AP said he was happy with the bike set-up and he was just able to practice technique? He was comfortable with were the bike was and he could just work on his craft, practice cornering, searching for multiple lines, working on his speed. Maybe Chase should try that, even RC said once you know what the bike will do, ride it accordingly, and at least you know how the bike will react, always searching may slow your progress because you can't just log laps and get fully comfortable.

There was an interview with Jett last year or early this year when he was talking about testing new parts or settings.  He said he can only do a couple of laps then stop and give feedback.  Any more and he starts compensating for the adjustment in his riding and his feedback starts losing its value.

You can’t have a bike setup that’s perfect everywhere; you have to pick the things that are your non-negotiables and then learn to ride with the compromises.

Sexton still left Charlotte with the points lead.  With the SMX points system, Chase needs to be faster than Jett and Eli in Vegas.  No need to test your limits in Round 1, especially since your outdoor bonus check might not have cleared yet.

Yes - One friggin race and leaves with the points lead - complete failure, abandon ship Smile

Hunter was competitive all summer and got yarded by Jett and Eli too. Jett and Eli overperformed to expectations, so now there is a new level to get to for the field.

I don't know that Chase underperformed to his own capability. He just needs to step up if he can.
