Whats everyones thoughts pros and cons of having the finals series after nearly 2 full seasons. The length of the season is ridiculously long,we are seeing riders coming and going in and out of the series, riders opting out of mxdn.  Would it be possible to secure more money for the regular season races and skip the finals?

No, we want more racing. More is better, plus its a different format which I like.

I enjoyed the SMX playoffs last season, but the fact that Jordon Smith was in position to win the 250 class on the final night at one point kind of makes it a bit of a gimmick IMO, the results throughout the rest of the season are kind of irrelevant.

There’s too many races IMO, especially in SX. Many sports at the moment are falling into the trap of seeing revenues go up, trying to cram as much into the schedule as possible, which inevitably leads to overworked athletes and a reduction in quality of the product. Moto is in danger of falling into the same trap, it shouldn’t need 31 events to make money

These 3 SMX rounds are completely pointless along with the title of "SMX Champion". Give back the 12th MX Round. Cut these 3 lame races out. And let these guys have their time off to recover, vacation, holidays, training before January. 9 months of racing is long as hell for these guys. Just crown the SMX Champion from the SX and MX Championship finishes. Treat them like 2 moto scores to determine the winner. Pretty simple concept.
Chase got 3rd overall in SX, and 1st in MX = Moto scores as 3-1.....he wins the SMX Title.

Probably get crucified with you but I agree.  And I like your idea.  Average it out and pay down to 20 the same as you would with SMX. I understand everyone wants more racing but I can’t imagine the young guns won’t retire early (think villo and dunge) because of the grind.

I appreciate SMX in that someone is trying to do more, but a little three race thing will never have any meaning for me as being worthy of a "championship". The words "SMX Champion" are irritating.

You think the powers that be are going to decline the NBC money? Wild take . . .

9 months a year, I work 12 months a year and get 5 weeks off for vacation. If these guys are soooo overworked why do they do WSX, King of Paris, Ausi-X, etc. Racers love to race. Eli came back to race, and is coming back for another full season to race SX/MX/SMX. He's doing all of WSX because he wants to pre-race before racing AMA SX. Its a sport they love and want to do.

Its 3 more races to do, to collect huge checks and get bragging rights. I don't think they're complaining.

These guys aren't out there for the title they're out there for the payout, and without the "playoff" there is no extra payout.

Wasn't the " Play offs"  an idea that NBC had? And a part of why they are paying more for the broadcast rights?

It is a little gimmicky , but  I think they structured it this way so that it was still be exciting  and close racing . And harder to have a runaway with the champ rolling around in 9th place in the final moto/main event.

If not for SMX, I doubt we would have Tomac coming back maybe since he was thinking about the MXON. But  Kenny and Cooper Webb would most likely not be doing any nationals. So it has helped bring some guys back out after injury instead of just getting ready for the next  thing.

I know its been overly compared to it, but just think of it like any other stick and ball sport with playoffs. Do you think football fans felt the same way about the first few superbowls as they do now? Over time, if it hangs on, it'll gain more prestige if the riders value it more, if they get paid more for it. It'll become THE race to win. Right now, of course we value the SX title more, as do the riders, but give it some time before you call it a failure. Yes, its a gimmick, but everything is made up and started out as a gimmick.

Gotta get rid of the escalating points thing to be taken seriously beyond just being about making money. I also feel like truly hybrid tracks would be more interesting. Supercross without whoops is just supercross without whoops, which isn't great.

Funny thing is, none of them were contracted to race the series last year but they all fought to get in. Webb even raced outdoors, then switched teams early so he could race his YZ in SMX.

The riders wanted more money, the series adds 2 additional races with a VERY large payout. What else can we complain about?

Maybe they should make the SMX starting points be based on your results for both SX and MX individually, not combined. I.e.

Sexton would start with 45 points since he got 3rd in SX and 1st in MX instead of just 25 points. Jett would have 38 points since he got 1st in SX and 9th in MX . This way there is a little more emphasis on first 2 series. It would also make the total possible points 200 for SMX instead of 175.

I guarantee if you told these guys would you rather race 3 extra races and make a shit ton more money or stop racing and go home with what you got they would all race them.

I think the triple points thing actually worked out great last year, nobody wants to buy a $200 ticket for the finals to watch the points leader roll around in 5th and everyone else that's locked into their position do the same.

100%..  3 races doesn't constitute a championship in a market like ours.  SMX was developed as a panic, knee jerk reaction to WSX.  All for riders making more $.  Just pay it out in SX and MX and crown a Grand National Champ.  In hindsight WSX wasn't a threat.

If you really want a fall series, run a Trans AM style one with best MXGP vs best AMA outdoors.  Red Bud/High Point/Unadilla/Glen Helen.  Majority of our guys need more wok outddors

SMX makes more riders want to do MX to get a chance at winning the SMX finals money so it’s a great ending series imo.

Yep.  The first Super Bowl wasn't even a sellout.

its a double edge sword for me & reason why is tht SMX as a whole i dont hold as valuable ( title wise ) as i do with SX & MX  but in tht same token i appreciate SMX for wht is cause it also have these guys coming back from injury to still be able & motivated to race outdoors cause normally like others stated , Kenny , Eli , coop  , RJ , the heartbreak kid Jett we wouldn’t see them boiiss till the next season at A1 or the 1st east coast rd

It's only one more race, and completed a few weeks earlier, if you consider that most of the 450 riders used to race the Monster Cup in mid-late October.

Personally I think they should drop maybe 1 outdoor and 1 sx race and increase SMX to 5 rounds

I like the finals. I just don't like the term "playoffs."

If there's truly too much racing on the schedule, then we should cut out 3 Supercross rounds and alternate the cities that get a Supercross race every season.

EDIT: I dislike the term "playoffs" because of, you guessed it, grammar reasons. You don't "play" a race. You race it. Let's call the final races "finals" or "raceoffs."

Not a bad idea. 15 SX, 10 MX then 5 SMX rounds, maybe do 1 national (the one they drop from the MX series, 1 full blown SX, then 3 SMX hybrid tracks.

25 points to 1st O/A in SX, 22, 20, etc.

25 points for 1st O/A in MX, 22, 20, etc.

Then do 25 points per race the first 3 rounds, 50 points for O/A win at round 4 and 75 points at round 5. Did that to come up with 250 possible points. The other option would be for the SMX races just do 25 points except for the final round which could be double points and the total possible points would be 200.

Do some of you people wonder why you are referred to as "Vitards"?

No one is prepared to give up the money NBC is paying for the SMX playoffs. They are not getting rid of them while NBC is putting up big bucks so just shut it already. Do any of you dorks that are against them think that Eli or Cooper Webb would come back for the last couple MX rounds if there was no SMX? Not only is it better that we get more races to watch with SMX but the MX season has improved because of it.

Agreed....I hate the "playoff" term being used.
