Update: It has been 5 weeks since the accident, and Jake remains in the rehabilitation inpatient program at Baylor University. With just 10 days left in the hospital, the medical team is preparing to transition him to an outpatient care program. Encouragingly, Jake is actively participating in a medical study, and recently both the nurse and doctor noted some movement in his knee and calf. While these movements may be subtle and Jake may not feel them significantly, they brought a huge smile to my face and made my last month. Witnessing his progress and toughness over this past month has been truly heartwarming as I myself had a TBI(some hospital time) a couple of years ago and how upbeat and positive Jake has been while being in the hospital over a month is truly inspiring.

Despite the challenges, Jake, an avid cyclist, stands out as one of the few in rehabilitation who consistently utilizes the therapy bike. In a recent milestone, he completed a 30-minute session with it registered him pedaling for a full minute. Moreover, his legs have started to exhibit occasional twitches.

Hopefully I can hook him up with an awesome experience during the Smx race at Texas Motor Speedway. Waiting for my July bonus to come through and hopefully they still have some available.

Thankyou everyone for sharing your story and experience’s. I’ve been passing everything along to Jake! He’s not really a phone person and not active on social media but More that welcome to shoot him a email as he does use/check his email actively. jake113w@gmail.com

Hey everyone,

I just wanted to give you an update on Jake. It's been about a month since he finished outpatient rehab, and he's been hitting the therapy gym a couple of times a week. He's slowly but surely making progress, gaining a little more movement each time. Oh, and the big news is that our dad installed hand controls in Jake's truck, so now he can drive! He's really enjoying the freedom of being able to drive himself around. His favorite thing so far has been hitting up Quick Trip, getting them to pump his gas, and grabbing a drink - it's the little things, right?

But here's the thing: Jake has started a GoFundMe account to raise money for stem cell therapy. His insurance doesn't cover these treatments or the therapy gym, and they're pretty pricey. It's tough for him to ask for help, but he doesn't know what else to do. If you could share the link or contribute, we'd be extremely grateful.

On a lighter note, I'm hoping to get Jake a free ticket for Dallas Supercross. If anyone has any tips or can help out in any way, it would mean the world to us.

Thanks to everyone who has been reaching out and keeping Jake in their thoughts and prayers. Your support means everything to us.

I extremely appreciate it. Thankyou all.

Would anyone know how to go about getting a wheelchair accessible ticket at Texas motor speedway?

Not sure if this link will work or not, but if you go to ticketmaster you can zoom in on the seating and see the wheelchair accessible tickets.

Don’t forget he has a few Moto brethren who have been through it as well. Tell him to reach out if he feels the need or has questions

Little Update on Jake

I wanted to share a quick update on Jake's journey over the past couple of weeks. He recently completed an 8-week exoskeleton clinical trial at Craig Hospital in Denver, and it was an incredibly positive experience for him. He made some significant progress during the trial!

Jake has now transitioned to outpatient therapy at Baylor Dallas, where he’s attending sessions twice a week, and he's also started going to a therapy gym. He remains interested in pursuing stem cell therapy and hopes to explore that option before the end of the year.

If anyone has suggestions or recommendations for additional therapies, please feel free to reach out—I’d greatly appreciate any insights.

I've always heard that adversity builds character, and while that may be up for debate, I can confidently say that it reveals true character. I couldn’t be prouder of how Jake has faced these challenges head-on.

Thank you all for your continued support!

- As for me, I’ve been struggling to find motivation to engage in the sport I love. With Jake’s injury and the loss of my boss's son not to long after Jake’s injury, it’s been really difficult for me to get out there and put in some laps. I went riding a little over a month ago, and honestly, it didn’t go well—I just didn’t feel comfortable at all. I’m hoping to rediscover my passion for it soon, but right now, it’s a challenge.

Happy Thanksgiving to you all and well wishes! IMG 1570 1

A few things-

Keep up with the rt300 stim bike that was pictured maintaining circulation and lower extremity muscle is important.

Water therapy gets the person out of the chair and allows the therapist to assist in active/passive range of motion.

Get up into standing frame daily if possible. Weight bearing on lower extremity is good.

Continue strengthening and stretching at gym.

Best wishes to Jake. I used to ride at River Valley before moving away. When we lived in the DFW  area, my girlfriend (now wife) got an SCI from an MTB crash and spent the first month at Baylor, and has worked for recovery ever since (T-11 complete, 11 yrs). I see a lot of parallels with Jake, and echo what jmc2 recommended above.

Regarding the current science for treatments, I highly recommend following Unite to Fight Paralysis. Their mission is to unite and empower the international spinal cord injury community to cure paralysis through advocacy, education, and support for research. Through this network, my wife had an epidural stimulator implanted this year, outside of a clinical trial, and insurance covered it. I’m not advocating for one treatment or another, but if Jake is doing his homework I would start with U2FP.

I'm grateful for these updates. I dont know your brother, but my son and I ride at RV so this hits home.

I have an acquaintance with an SCI. He is paralyzed from the waist down. He went to a place called https://veritaneuro.com/ in Mexico to get a spinal cord stimulator implanted. Cost him $100 grand. He said it has not been a magic cure-all, and it requires dedication,  but he has recovered some movement in his legs. Not full movement or coordination, but improvement. He said that he met a quadriplegic that had this therapy and was really dedicated to it who had extraordinary progress. The spinal cord stimulators are well documented and understood for use in chronic pain, but motor recovery is an off label use.

It's definitely not step 1 and you should do your research, but I'm just passing it along.

Reach out to the High Fives Foundation based in Truckee, CA (highfivesfoundation.org). It’s an amazing foundation that helps athletes that sustain life changing injuries get the resources they need to not only adapt to their new lives, but also gets them back in the saddle when the time is right. They’re also an amazing network of the most inspirational human beings I’ve ever come across in my life and their attitudes and approach to recovery and life, in general, is nothing short of amazing! Hope the best for for your brother during his recovery and beyond. ❤️

No bitching, no complaining, no why me’s. At the gym (ATF in Carrollton) by 7:30am, 45 minute drive from his place, 5 days a week. Goes to Baylor in downtown Dallas - PT twice a week, and another therapy gym on Fridays. Drives himself everywhere. Takes his wheelchair apart piece by piece from the drivers seat, and puts it in the passenger seat, then puts it all back together when he gets to where he’s going. Carrollton gym is closed for the holidays until 1/2 - owner told Jake - tell me what time you want to be here and I’ll have it open for you. Jake told him see you at 7:30am every day…

From what I’m told, Craig is phenomenal for rehabbing any and all spinal injuries. One of my college roommates spent a lot of time there and they were instrumental in getting his workers comp insurance to continue covering rehab past the 18 month mark. He hasn’t been able to walk on his own, but he’s made some strides every year until he got sick 3 or 4 years ago and those small advances have made a huge impact on his life. Through his foundation he built a terrain park at Craig to help people who need a chair adapt to the ‘outside world’ just a little easier.

Hopefully in 6 months we’ll be reading about your brother being able to walk for a few hours at a time, then more updates on good progress after that. I’ll be praying for him.

Merry Christmas to you all and Godbless yall and all your families. I can’t wait for the day to post that he took his first unassisted steps. I just know it’s going to happen. Kids got that dog in him. We are just a small Moto/wrestling family and means the world how many of yall have reached out and put your busy life’s aside to send a small prayer out for Jake.

Gonna load up the bike after a couple hours at work this morning and put some laps in for the first time for quite a few months as Jake’s been giving me shit for not riding lol
