ADAC Masters/German championship bans tear offs

Yet another series in Europe has banned the use of tear offs. Well, technically you can still use tear offs, but they are not allowed to leave your goggles, which basically means using the strap on the side of the goggles or roll-offs.

Personally, I think it's only a matter of time that this same rule is implemented in the MXGP as well, and I'm actually in favour of it for obvious reasons.

Has there been any limitations or bans on tear offs in the U.S. and what do you guys think about it?wmx2024 dmsb abreisser.jpg?VersionId=qgVKhI tO51Kn1y9VzZzZh5T8OZRXbo

... sure tiny, clear plastic tear offs are the problem, when there are mountains of cardboard Amazon boxes overflowing in the city streets in America??

Italy banned tear offs, and yet Rome and Naples are strewn with garbage and food waste. Perfect

Politicians anywhere pick low hanging fruit to score points with wealthy environmental extremists.  they dont get much resistance from the dirt biking community, so they call it a "victory for the enviromnent" or somethin similar.

I've had my fill of paper drinking straws that disintegrate before I finish my drink.

...they can pry my Scott laminates from my cold, dead hands...

National Enduros have banned them. Can't blame them if you look at the start of a test at the end of the day.

The National Enduro series banned them this year, granted its enduro and roost isn't as much of a problem as motocross so not as big of a deal.

Some races have 800 guys so if everyone uses 5 tear offs that's a lot of shiny trash that seems to never get buried they always sit on top of the dirt.

I love riding but even I wouldnt want thousands of tear offs on my property every year.

I buy nearly 2 million pounds of plastic a month.  Even I would like to reduce the amount of single use plastic waste that we end up with.

I've always wondered what a track like Glen Helen must end up with as far as tear offs go, but I guess it only rains a couple times a year when the track is operating?

Is it mostly the government banning tear offs or private land owners?

What’s the 1st track/riding facility that you’d heard didn’t allow tear-offs…ever…the 1st one you’d ever heard of?

Me? The Stewart Compound. Big James don’t mess around. He don’t like the mess…AT ALL. 🤣

So Germany, Belgium and Holland are all shit hot on stuff like this, you have to have environmental mats under bikes, you cant power wash in the pit area or use non approved cleaners.

Most places in the UK are tear off free now, none allowed at Hawkstone at the weekend.

I wouldn't throw a ziplock bag or plastic wrapper on the ground and think it was okay.  I know it's part of moto, but it is still plastic trash just being thrown on the ground.  I can see the logic and reasoning in trying to limit that.  Especially on national forest or public/gov lands.  On private land I have no problems with an owner saying no to them.

Used to walk the tracks and pick up used ones, clean them, then reuse them back in the day. Not sure many do that anymore.

Now that’s a good idea! Makes sense to re-use anything we can.

I thought only pros use tear offs. They’re so damn expensive who can afford them.

If I had a track I'd ban tear offs.
I like traditional tear offs the best but there are decent alternatives riders could use.
I've tried biodegradeable tear offs and they work OK. I've tried the Gogglezone wipe lens and it works good until it becomes scratched. Roll offs work well.

They're banned in French racing also since this year.

Tear-offs have been banned in Australia since 2017, it's not an issue, everybody uses roll-offs.

I usually have tear offs on to keep my lens from scratching especially riding woods hitting limbs all the time, if im just doing practice loops and need to pull one ill just pull if off and shove it down my waist band until I get back to the truck.

I do the same. Just toss them in your boot.

I've always regretted using tearoffs. Never so much that I tried rolloffs, but I limit my goggles to two, and I usually don't pull them unless my vision is hugely messed up. Most of the time, I pull a tearoff when rolling back to the pit and dump it in a trash can.

So was it the government that made this ban or the series promoter?

I could be wrong but I don't think ADAC Masters has the authority to ban private jets or superyachts in Germany.

I'm all for environmental causes, but I do think it's funny that they say you can't let them fall on the ground. After the race what happens to them? They go in the rubbish bin to be taken to a dump, which doesn't really seem better other than optics...

So by your line of thinking we should all just throw our trash on the ground wherever we want instead of throwing it in a garbage can so it can go to the dump?

Same in Sweden and has been for over 20 years. A club is not allowed to host a race without a washing place with a oil separator etc, same as the GP’s.

I think the matts became mandatory around 04 or something like that.

And tear off’s has been banned for a couple of years now.

Do you take your trash out, or just let it pile up in your house?

I think he was quite broad in his scope of view. I agree i dont think tear off are that big of a deal. When i had my personal track i never had a problem walking around and cleaning everyones tear off up from the day or week. But that's just me. Some tracks pay the flaggers to clean them up as the day goes even.

Also just never been a fan of roll offs. Ive had more roll off issues lead to tossed goggles then tear offs.

Yup... This right here^^^. I never wear my goggles without a tear off protecting the lens. I also never put my goggles back into the case without a tear off, and then the goggle bag, before placing into the storage case. I will not use a lens that has a scratch.

It is different. You may wanna read up on waste management in Europe, specifically Germany. Only a small % of waste ends up in landfills
