Landed on Somebody

Yesterday Evening I experienced every riders worst nightmare, landing on somebody. I went up to the jump he rolled and I jumped My Back tire ended up landing on his front fender/handlebar area and I fell of the front end, and saw the ground and that’s all I remeber. 15-30minutes later I “woke up” with tools in my hand and a small headache. I fixed my bike and went back out for another 3 motos and felt great with how I was riding. I tried to figure out what happened During that 15-30minute time frame that I don’t  remember anything, my friends said that Came back in the golf cart with my helmet off and front number plate in hand and pissed off and all I said was that I landed on somebody. My friend gave me his tools and I started taking my bike apart and that where my memory turned on and starts again. The drive back home sucked my head ache got worst but I think that’s because I went ran out of water my first moto and hadn’t had anything to eat in like 7 hours, just dehydrated and hungry I went to the ER and they confirmed I  had a concussion. The Bell moto-10 saved me. However I was looking at it today and the visor isn’t broken, no chipped carbon or damaged shell, I looked at the EPS Linear and none of it is compressed or cracked, I think It’s still good. I think the sperical system took the impact and rotated and that was it, no Eps or linear was crushed or cracked, and no big marks anywhere on the helmet. Just thought I get this out here, sorry if it is long. Just a scary crash and some stuff that doesn’t add up

Holy smokes! . Weird dat for sure. Similar thing i experienced about 5 years ago. Smacked my noggin on practice in a small crash. Raced 6 motos and barely remembered a thing. I threw the helmet away.

Bro. As someone who has been landed on why did you send it if he rolled? Shit happens quick out there I get it but damn

Glad you’re mostly alright. Concussions are no joke. Is the other dude banged up?

Out for half an hour and you went back out for 3 more motos? Dude, you're risking your life. Take a few weeks off and get a new helmet. At the very least, have Bell inspect it for you.

Definitely get rid of the helmet. It is hard to judge the damage to the polystyrene. A visual check usually isn't enough.

He crossed over from what I can remeber to set himself up for the outside of the next turn. It looked like he was gonna jump it, he just slammed on his brakes at like the top of the face

Yea dude.

Never ever ever do that again.

If you get knocked like that, don’t go back out.  Seems like nothing but it is extremely dangerous. Some deaths have happened because of similar decisions when it comes to concussions.

Take it easy. Don’t underestimate the neck trauma you got, start those neck excercises and stretches immediately

Yea you really, really shouldn't have gone back out on track after blacking out for 30 minutes...and you shouldn't have driven yourself home either. You're putting yourself and others at serious risk by doing so

What kind of friends do you have, that let you ride again after such a crash?!
Most reasonable people would have taken you straight to the hospital! Good thing it ends like this, you're lucky

Glad you are OK other than a bruised noodle. I have a couple things. What was the fate of the other rider? If you hit the ground that hard your lid is smoked. The liner has multiple layers of varying density that get compressed to save your bean.

Pretty sure every riders worst nightmare is getting landed on. How was the other rider?

Not to keep echoing it but several very poor, dangerous decisions by you and those around you who should be looking out for you

This is insane. Go to the hospital if you haven’t already.

If the helmet is ok and you got a concussion, it seems like it didnt do it’s job of absorbing the impact. You know you landed on someone, but you never found out how that person is doing?

The helmet might saved him from a skull fracture. They don't prevent head injury, they reduce the risk of or severity of a head injury.

If the impact is that hard, shouldn’t it have deformed/cracked to dissipate injury? A lot of impact seemed to make it through.

I think you are right with the skull fracture thing, as the chin bar or the helmet i’m pretty sure smacked the shit out of my chest which is cut up and bruised from it I belive. The other guy ended up being alright. I’m shipping the helmet to bell today for them to inspect it.

That's a good idea.

The thing is, it might have been a whiplash that caused you to black out/concuss, so the helmet might be OK. You'd think there would be some visible sign on the outside if it was a large impact.

All that said, I watched a guy "RE-blackout" on one of the biggest jumps on our night track after he'd gotten up from crashing on the biggest one. EMS tried to get him to talk to them, but he took off. Half a lap later he went nighty night on the triple and the landing was really bad. Fortunately, he didn't take anyone else out with him. Can't say that for the fence though.

The most shocking element of this story is that someone from vital participated in a race!

I was riding the C class open ride last weekend (normally a vet but wanted to ride with my kid who's just starting) and someone jumped over me on a HUGE tabletop and flat-landed right next to me...his tires couldn't have missed my head by more than a few inches. I've been around a while, I know to hold my line on jumps and it probably saved me a hospital trip or worse. I was so pissed...he was a good rider but the kid had no business riding in the C class. I rode over to his pit afterward and asked him why he's sandbagging the C class instead of riding A/B where he belongs. He said he's been off the bike with an injury (shocking) and didn't feel like his fitness was where it needs to be for A/B.  IT'S AN OPEN RIDE, DUDE, NOT A RACE!  I tried to explain to him that the C class is full of riders who get squirrely on jump faces and landings and that if he's going to ride that class, he really needs to chill on the Axel Hodges jump stuff. He replied "or those guys should learn how to ride".  I asked what year he was born and he said 2003.  I just rode away...you can't fix some people.

I’m guessing you weren’t thinking clearly with the concussion, hence the decision to go back out. If your friends didn’t know you were knockied out they might not have known to stop you from riding again. A perfect storm for bad decisions - glad you’re ok

None of them knew I was blacked out until the day after when I told them, they all thought I was fine because I came back and just started working on my bike according to them.

That’s what I figured. It’s not that they are bad friends - they just didn’t realize what happened.
