Hey all, just dropping in to say hello. I just bought a 98’ xr100r for my son. He also has a 24’ crf125. My 8 year old daughter races in Midwestxc on a 24’ crf50f. Looking at a top end rebuild, probably a 120 kit. I’m mechanically inclined as I’ve worked on many different pieces of equipment, tractors, buses, light and heavy duty auto. Hell, I’ve never raced bikes before but if he doesn’t want to ride it, I might try to find a mad dog race to try my luck at. I’ve heard these are fun bikes to toy around and practice on anyways.
Anyone from indiana on here?
If this should be posted elsewhere please move it to the proper thread.

"He'll, I've never raced dirtbikes before..."
..welcome Noob.
STFU Noob!
Oh shit!!!
This is a dirtbike forum???
Thanks and stfu right back at everyone. Shit..I must be in the wrong place, huh? Dirtbikes?
Does anyone have any advice on which way to go with this bike; besides sell it and get a bigger bike?
The 98 XR? Sure, the big bore is fine. I would also replace the valves and cam chain, pay attention how the cam chain tensioner work's as it's spring loaded and the lock is what you release last. Enjoy riding with your kids
I’m looking at replacing the head, jug, internals and cam holder too. Thanks for the heads up on the chain tensioner spring. Probably a little overkill.

That's a big carb with a really bad air filter, but otherwise good. The tensioner pulls down to load (I've known NASA engineers that couldn't figure it out). Don't go for max power, just have fun on the thing and when he can wring it's neck everywhere start to look for a race bike!
Appreciate it. I was thinking of saving money with the stocker and rejetting it but wanted to throw it out there.
Pit Row
Add a tooth to the rear sprocket…
Seriously, welcome.
I thought that commi, Guy B had outlawed that. You might wanna reply whit a testing 123 to see if you're still good.
But I still concur. Welcome, and STFU noob!
I just did a BBR 120 kit on a late 90's XR100. Added some power, but still isn't anywhere near a modern 85 race bike.
The XR is what it is - a playbike, or a good pit bike to race in a pitbike race. It is a GREAT beginner bike, because race bike tends to scare beginners. If your son gets serious, and can ride the XR for all its worth, your gonna have to save that money for a real race bike.
Oh, and STFU NOOB! :-)
Welcome! When your STFU Noob probationary period is over, please give us your opinions on the following questions:
-Does seat bouncing actually do anything?
-When you jump and your rear tire goes to the right, are you "whipping" to the left or right?
-Is a single to table a triple?
No, I'm just kidding. Don't do that!
I live and die by my XR 100's but have never had any luck with more than an exhaust. I did the BBR kit and it wasn't worth the coin for what it did. Like said above, Let him twist the grip off of it how it is and when he's ready, 85 time. Oh and STFU Noob, Welcome aboard.
And please don't copy/paste photos, articles etc. every few minutes like ILovemoto dork. He's the most annoying poster on here. 🙄
If you're interested in having someone wash your boots for you, then you've come to the right place.
As far as the XR, big bore pit bikes are a blast. Do it and have a great time. When your kids are ready for something faster then you can still use it as a pit bike for you...and I promise they will still want to ride it for messing around off the track.
This ^^^^
This guy knows a thing or 3 about XR100's...lol. I've seen it.
I have to split the case to replace the kick start shaft. While I’m in there, should I put a new crank and all in or replace the shaft, any worn parts, jug, piston, head etc.? Then hopefully enjoy it for many years as I’ll never get my money back out of it.
Stock OEM is always the most reliable and plenty of fun with the power they have.
He posts some kickass photos. I think that’s cool.
