Monday I looped out the 450 in front of the wife and kids. When I went to pick the bike up I knew something was wrong. Long story short and very bumpy ambulance ride later I was diagnosed with a T11 compression fracture. They’re telling me I’ll have to wear a brace for 6 weeks and I’ll be good to go after that.
As I sit here at the hospital bored out of mind I began to wonder what type of recovery time you fellas with the same injury may have had?
I’m 30 and this is the first bone I’ve broken. I was up walking around 8 hours after the accident so I can’t help but think it’s possible to recover quicker.
I had a compression fractured T12 years ago. Had 6 weeks in a back brace but left it a few months after that till I rode again. Unfortunately cracked and compression fractured my T3,4,5 a few years later that took longer to heal. Do not rush back riding, your back is no joke and i'd give it a good few months until you ride again unless you are pro.
I compression fractured my L2 in 2017, and had to get surgery to fuse together L1 to L3 to hold it all in place. I was back on the bike approximately 8 months later. Seeing as you don’t need surgery, your recovery process should be even quicker. For me it wasn’t so much a pain thing, but it was finding confidence while riding again, and dealing with lingering thoughts of getting injured again. Don’t rush your comeback until you are feeling 100% and your body and mind are back to feeling normal. This sport requires a ton of focus, so you want to make sure you’re feeling good before getting on the bike prematurely.
Best of wishes during your recovery, this is just a bump in the road!
Feel better fast!
As for the loopout, were you showing off for the family after a couple cold ones?
In 1981 T4 and T5 for me and I was in a brace for 6 months. Take your time and let it heal and you will be fine.

Take your time, make sure you are completely healed. You are 30 now, you want to make sure you can get around without a walker when you are 60. I had a teardrop fracture of my C2 last year, C6 and first rib as well. Luckily no surgery but was in a hard neck brace for 4 months. Back to 100% now but took at least 8 months before I forgot that it happened in my day-to-day life.
T4 and T5 here. Ice is your friend.
I did T5, T6 and T7 after getting t-boned on a holeshot. Didn't find out until a month later when i went to get an x-ray on what i thought might have been a few broken ribs. My ribs were fine, but by back was not. Didn't hurt bad then, but I feel it every day now
Oh, to be 20 again
I compression fractured T10, T11 and T12 in 2008. Was walking around for a few hours before I realized my back was hurt. Where I landed on my ass hurt more than back. I crashed in morning practice and stayed to let my son race that day. I went in motorhome and laid face down on bed and when I went to get up using my back muscles, I knew it was bad. Wife came with MIL and let my son race and the MIL took me to hospital. Wore a brace for 8-10 weeks (?) and healed up. Like a previous comment, I feel it everyday.
Compressed T3-T6 road racing with T6 taking the brunt and lost about 1/2" of height a few years ago when I was 45.
Back brace and alligator rolls for about 10 weeks. About two weeks later (around Thanksgiving), had an oncoming car pull a left in front of me while going 55mph and t-boned him really good. Got whiplash in my neck but nothing else was damaged. My neck bothers bothers me more than my back
Started riding in the late spring / early summer. Take it slow, do recovery, gain the strength back, focus on your posture, etc and you will be fine.
Another one here, I’ve compression fractured my T3-6&8 in a bad MTB crash and also my L1/2 in an automobile crash. No surgeries, just time away from any type of strenuous activities. Listen to your body and take at least a couple months to let it heal.
My neck is my issue, bulging discs between 4/5/6 causing excruciating nerve pain in my neck and shoulders. I’m desperately trying to avoid fusion, I know too many that have had multiple surgeries trying to relieve the pain by fusing the neck.
Try and keep the pain pill thing to a minimum, it’s easy to get an unwanted addiction to them.
Thank you and I may have been showing off a bit but I never drink and ride lol
My kid did his T10 (I think) sometime ago, it's hard to recover from because everything feel ok, but one wrong move can have you back on the couch in pain pretty easily. Don't rush it, find a good physio and slowly work up, just because you can walk around it doesn't mean it's good to go.
My kid did this about 4 years ago (also T11 20% crushed- overjumped then looped out when he bounced). He didn't really think much of it as it hurt but nothing terrible, especially considering the crash. He tried riding a few weeks later, thinking he was fine, but then had to stop due to pain. Finally went to the doctor about 3 months later when he still had some nagging pain and that's when he found out about the fracture. It was mostly healed by then so they really couldn't do anything for it. He's seems fine now, though when he was working as a lifeguard his back would bug him a bit after standing all day. He's done school now and no longer lifeguarding so it's been a quite a while since I've heard him complain about it.
This is almost my exact story, except I crashed during a cross country race to fracture my T5,6,7. Didn't find out until a month later when I finally got x-rays because I thought I had broken ribs. 34 years later it is a major source of daily pain.
1974 in Germany riding a CZ 400, when I chopped the throttle the Cable jumped out of the Jikov Carb and went to 1/3rd throttle instantly and the handlebars drove by skinny arse into the ground!! Bent those effen CZ Bars like a pretzel.
Needless to say my back was effed up! I went to military doc and he prescribed Tylenol and sent me packing. I was a walking wreck. A few painful weeks passed and I approached a 6 ft plus friend and asked him to grab me around my chest with my arms up and drop me ever so Slightly!
Damn it worked - Though I momentarily passed out and scared the crap out of my friend.
I’ve been pretty lucky all these years, some pain in the back, until last Sunday night. I woke up with a locked Cervical! Fk this is a pain in the neck as the neck is locked with no rotation. The chiro says it will take a few days to a week. It is ever slowly abating as I can hear little pops last night and today.
Had to cancel out of the NW Vet Nationals (Old Timers) at Washougal this weekend, and I had just got my Triumph sorted. (Rekluce and Suspension)
It is what it is
Take care of your back (Spinal Cord)
Take your time and let it heal properly. I did T5&6 about 24 years ago and it’s still a PITA sometimes. I looped out at a private track and was the only person there riding that day. Crawled back to my truck and called for help. Track owner loaded my bike up and I drove home. Hospital missed diagnosed and didn’t know about the fracture until 3 years later after going to a back specialist. Don’t ride alone and give it some time to heal.
The neck is worse than the back. Not that a back injury is nothing because it’s brutal. All my disk in my neck r ruptured. I broke a few vertebrae in my lower back and ruptured the disk against the nerves. Some bone chips got stuck in my nerves. I was in the hospital a few hrs. Feeling in my legs started coming back. So I went back to work on the hhg rig. I rode and raced to on the 3 1/2 days off . When I flew home. I don’t suggest that because you do more damage. I hv a freakish high pain tolerance so I got by. You,ll hv arthritis when you get older real bad.
I’m not sure how to take your post… If you’re just trolling and burning time messing with people or if you are delusional ?
I’ve never noticed so many extraordinary posts from you in one day, you’re on a roll, carry on…….. 🧌
Thanks for all the input fellas. I was measured for my brace this evening so I’ll have it tomorrow and then I’ll be able to be discharged from this hospital. Fortunately today I found out my short term disability plan will carry me for up to two years so I’ll have all the time I need to get healed up properly.
When I was 18 I worked with an older guy who once told me “son, you better take good care of your back because you’ll never get a job using your head” 😂
