Didn't the AMA hire Wardy recently to basically be the go between?

What do the the Outdoor Nationals have to do with this thread?

The only obstacle involved in Reed's injury was a corner and a guy on a blue bike.

Well, lets not get get carried away with the pitchforks, lets look at the facts:

Stewart - stupid move got himself injured
Reed - just an accident
Grant - just an accident
Short - debatable, standard triple but with a tricky run up to it
Millsaps - who knows

Langston - avoidable
Villopoto - avoidable
Tedesco - avoidable

But yeah, since the Alessi incident at Red Bud last year rider safety has been an obvious gap. No it wont prevent all injuries in SX, but if it can save the career of one rider then that should be enough motivation.

I'm not saying Reed's injury was from the tracks. I'm just saying that keeping riders healthy should be the first priority if they want the sport to attract heavy investment. There's already enough danger (example Reed's injury), and when a team gets stacked like Kawasaki did, it sucks that both of their riders got injured.

A sponsor wont care why neither rider came away with the championship. When Monster funded 2 of the top 3 pre-season favorites and comes away with nothing, it can not be good motivation for further investment.

I just watched the 450 race and it showed them working on the landing after Reed said something at the end of his heat.

Am I missing something cause by what I saw on TV, they did listen and tried to fix the landing?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not on the AMA's side and always support the riders but seems like they were trying to do the right thing......

I was not there but I have seen the tracks changed because of rider input.
When J Button was injured going into the whoops directly after a start, Stephan Roncada talked to the track crew and refused to ride until the first 4 whoops were modified.
They listened and changed the whoops.
Later when the tracks had other issues that looked to be questionable, Stephane again talked to the builder and changes were made to allow better safer racing. After that the Dirtwurx guys had Stephane talk to them after each track walk for any ideas to make it better and changes were made.
Another rider saw that changes were being made and decided to chime in but the changes he was asking for were for his benefit ( I will not give his name but he is one of the best in this sport) not necessarily for the benefit of all racers or the fans.
In the past changes were made for the better, not sure what changed that they would not listen now.

The Nationals now have two less top 450 riders. I would not like to watch riders drop right before the switch to my series and feel some of these injuries could have been prevented or are not necessary to still have an entertaining and competitive product. With them on the line I have a better product to promote.

It's more interesting with #2 and #9 racing instead of watching.

If I was Kawasaki, I would be beyond anger and into actions. Actions that would make the person or persons responsible for ignoring Reed's warning pay. He is one of the most experienced and successfull supercross riders of all time and went the extra mile to point out an obvious and extremely dangerous situation.

He was ignored. Two riders almost died because of it and the championship is now over with 3 rounds to go.

The fans lost, the sport lost, and Ryan Villopoto and Ivan Tedesco, two of our favorite and fastest riders lost huge.

Bobby, I hope that these "very inside" people take some VERY strong actions against those responsible for ignoring that warning and that they are made to pay.

Fucking big time.

And the next time the riders say JUMP on a safety issue, whoever the hell is in charge better say, "How high sir?!"

Solution seems pretty simple to me: 1) tame down the tracks 2) No retarded jumps (like that triple) 3) put some restrictor plates , or something, on the 450s to slow them down (at least for Supercross). That or go back to 250 two-strokes, which ain't gonna happen!

Dirt Werx have had to accommodate the tracks to the four-strokes by making the gaps bigger (Rich Winkler, RacerX interview). If you tame back the bikes, the tracks will be tamed back as well. Racers will be able to race their hardest, as fast as the bike will allow, and since the bikes will be de-tuned, hopefully the speeds will be within safer riding limits.

Sounds like a plug for the 350's?

No more no less.
But it's always the same call, as in no call at all.

Shirts, hats, jackets, pretty official looking if you ask me, but that's all there is it seems.
Poor calls, poor rulings if even at all, & here again, nothing!
Was Reed right? Sure he was & is.
Racing's dangerous, that's a given.
When Champions speak you listen. If not get people who will.
No one, & I mean no one (track officials) walking around that track or others lately can really say anything . All they're supposed to do is listen, loud & clear. Why, you say! It's simple. If any on the sanctioning side or track building or promoting side can go bar to bar with say a Chad Reed, then ok then, but none are even in the same galaxy, in other words clearly not qualified to judge if a section or obstacle is dangerous or not.
Can the track builders always get it right? No.
Can the AMA/FIM crew always get it right? No.
Can the promoters always get it right? No.
Can they listen? Yes.
Should they listen? Yes.
To me, this is another example of bad everything.
No reason.
No excuse.
I blame all the blamable.
If I was an OEM, sending my highly paid guys out there to do battle in such conditions I'd be making some noise. Plenty of noise.
Mistakes are easy.
Problems do arise.
When such is noted & ignored, that's clearly a human thing, to ignore is human!
I'm bitter cause I know those guys, RV & Ivan. Even if I didn't their pain & suffering is on the hands of others.
They always seem to listen, fix, whatever after the fact.
Pro activeness is what, just a lost term!
Again, they were told.
Again, they were warned.
If these were kids, they'd be sent to their room without any dinner!
If these were my guys I'd be beyond angry & upset.
I hope all that had a hand in this are relaxing comfortably at home right now.
I hope all those that had a hand in skating the issues are thinking of RV & Ivan.
Time for some new blood.

Highlighted the above because it just shows how seriously rider safety is taken.

While it probably won't happen, Team Kawasaki should boycott the remainder of the SX season and concentrate on testing/prepping Reed for the Outdoor Nationals and any possible replacement being considered for RV. I wouldn't have Reed step on any SX track period for the remainder of the season since he made warning that were left to those with deaf ears and no concious to respond to a multi time champs safety concerns and didn't. .

I've been to enough rider meetings and heard complaints made after Press Days that continued still during Sat AM riders meetings that fell on deaf ears.

Although even top riders voiced concerns, nothing was done and subsequently, a top riders career ended one Sat afternoon during factory practice at the end of the '90s.

Best wishes on a speedy and perfect recovery to Villapoto and Tedesco.

Chad Reed tried, but the know it alls didn't want to listen. Kudos for trying CR22.

"Tim Ferry, pick up the white courtesy phone!" As you said, I don't think Kawi will skip the last 3, though Reeds baby may allow them to not drive to Seattle. The sponsors want and need the bikes on the track/podium etc.
It is a real shame that the side show has already put a damper on the outdoors!

no, AMA Pro Racing did. AMA Pro Racing doesn't sanction the supercross series (despite the fact that the awning on the truck that they drive to the races says "AMA Pro Racing" on it (!!). The AMA sanctions the supercross series.

Dude, would you stfu about restrictor plates on the 450's? Damn, your stupid! This isn't Nascar! These guys NEVER get about 50 mph. That is only on the start. The rest of the track you are looking at about 35mph in Rhythm sections and about 20 in the corners. That isn't super fast. If you want to be a girl, go ride a moped!

At the end of the day, though, Villo was way short on that jump. I don't know why, but even if they'd cut it down to 2' high, he wouldn't have cleared it cleanly. I don't know what actually happened to IT, but I heard he crashed in the corner.

Reed was absolutely right about that section, and kudos for speaking up. But shaving some off the top and improving the landing wouldn't help Villo.

What year was that the riders had a "strike" at the Vegas round? '93? I tried to find a link on Google (they must have been all deleted by the giant OEM 4-stroke consp........{bleep-sound of line being disconnected}....)

I do remember one line of their "position paper" that said something like "....and what is this 'new level' you want to go to, and how can we stop you from taking us there?"

It was Vegas 95, the year the lights went out... Jimmy Eickel's first form of revolt!

Anyone who thinks RV's bike wouldn't have handled that landing if the ramp was round hasn't been watching all the other factory guys case jumps...

RC even cased a triple a few years back and rode it out, cause the ramp was round enough to get away with it!!!

Weren't some of the tracks designed by riders last year (or the year before)
Maybe thats one way to keep the tracks safer. Have current 250 and 450 riders take turn helping with the design...

I disagree. First, I really doubt that he bails. That right there gives him a chance. And he's a great rider on a factory bike. Bounced around? Sure. Out of shape? Yep. Goes down anyway? Maybe. Out for the series with a busted leg? Doubt it.

My thoughts exactly, he was very very short on that jump, I cant say for sure but I doubt Reed wanted the landing lengthened and halved in height, that's about what it would have taken to save Villo from his get off. No idea how IT9 went down so can't really sit here and throw blame about his crash (anyone have a good source on what actually happened to IT9?).

They DID listen to Reed and they DID change the landing, it would not be fair to sit here with the advantage of hindsight and say they didn't change it enough.

There's an easy solution to all of this......NO MORE SUPERCROSS!! Mwahahahahaha!

Seriously though, I think the Euros have the right idea. SX is a sideshow if they want to do it.
