A friend of mine visited a Fsntic dealership yesterday, then later on told me that “Fantic/Minarelli actually make the YZ range for Yamaha, rather than Yamaha make them for Fantic.”
Not sure I’m convinced..
Anyone have anything on this??
That is interesting.... I guess someone working at a dealer must have access to the bikes origin?
Not much weirder than Yamaha, Kawi, or Honda outsourcing their kids / play bikes I guess.
Would Manarelli have the production capability? I've got no clue on their capabilities or the numbers of YZ's they shift these days.
Just nope. Fantic gets YZ frames and engines and make them Fantic. Minarelli used to be owned by Yamaha but was sold to Fantic. They produce the 300 cc enduro injected engine ans some 50 stuffs.
Not closely related (but two wheels), I think some of the Xmax series of Yamahas scooters are built in either Italy or France, not by Yamaha, can't remember which. Could have changed over the years also.
Much like Triumphs, both are obviously KTMs. A child can see by the placement of the seat, wheels, engine, and handlebars they are all made by KTM.

No, Fantic buy Yamahas direct from Japan and then assemble them in Italy
Over the years I have learned that a lot of the dealership guys don't really know as much as we think they do. Hell, we all tend to know more than they do.
Lots of manufacturers outsource some of their bikes to other companies. Yamaha makes the YZs, however. I wouldn't be surprised if the TT-R50 was made by a different factory, though.
You may be surprised to hear that Yamaha builds lots of engines for Toyota.
I think the V8 in the Volvo XC90 years ago was a Yamaha built engine.
2zzge engine in Celica, Mr2 and Lotus elise was Yamaha.
Fantic just makes Yz's better.
The original Taurus SHO had a Yamaha built engine
Pretty sure it was just the heads where Yamaha on the SHO
Not the first time I've been wrong LOL that was a long time ago LOL
Yamaha's V10 had more horsepower!
There was talk Yamaha could use Minarelli Direct Injection 2-Stroke engine when its ready for production.
They should maybe wait a little longer. Engine is not ready to take the world by storm yet. My test of the bike :
"Virile" That word features prominently in that video - at least with my translator setting.
Seems it's set up for EWC /XC (GNCC - WORCs - Sprint) hard chargers ( a reflection, I'd say, on the 2 main Fantic Factory testers, both of which are ex MXGP and EWC riders). So, somewhat aggressive, and stiff with the YZ alloy frame and stiffer suspension than the Beta.
About what I expected / suspected.
I'd love to see that engine, and it's further developments, become a new generation of Yamaha 2 strokes.
I wonder if Fantic / Marelli will turn their attention to the (relatively new) 125 engine? Do they use on their 'own' 125, the new (from 2022) engine?
With that largely Italian made engine, and the parts from Japan ( and elsewhere), it's an 'International' bike, like So Very Many Bikes are nowadays. It's how it is, and I'd put the differences between the 300 Fantic and the 250 Yamaha, More pronounced, I reckon, than the KTMs / KTHuskies and KTGGs.
I've also often wondered it the Fantic Frames are shipped welded , or in component parts to Italy. I'm told they are supplied completed, but especially with the 2 stroke frames, with it having so few component parts ( in the teens, from my dim recollection of articles when it came out in 2005), it might represent a shipping cost saving to do the welding in Italy??? Though, the 'normalization' time of the weldments that fabrication then shipping from Japan to Italy gives , could be a saving in and of itself over local final fabrication.

Virile is indeed a good way to describe the engine. That's okay for XC type stuffs, not for enduro/hard enduro like we do it in France. It also vibrates quite a lot for a modern bike. Chassis and suspensions are OK. As for the rest, i don't know.
In this 300...Is it possible that the lower end of the engine (central cases, gears...) is Yamaha and the rest is Minarelli?
I can tell you one thing for sure, the parts manager at our local Yamaha/KTM shop is a total dipshit! I bet he has never even sat on an MX bike, yet he tries to make everyone feel stupid when they stop in to buy parts. Only thing I will get from them is oil nowadays. Im friends with the owner, but i'd love it if he would fire that guy. He quoted me 1800 to refresh a top end on my YZ250F, lol. Got it done with parts for 425 by a professional MX mechanic last year.
Can I get that mechanics number?
The last 4 stroke top end I did it was over $300 just for the piston.
Not sure 100%. I'll have to check.
True, also designed by yamaha based on their v6 outboard engine.
You gonna come to NC to get the work done? Lol. It was Kyle Travis , Dax Bennick former mechanic before he signed with Star. I used Wiseco Racer Elite Piston kit. Forgot i had to buy a timing chain and gasket kit myself, so that was extra.
That was built by Engine Developments at Rugby UK, they were next door to us at Mitsubishi WRC
Why does anybody think dealers ever have inside info of any sorts? Dealers never know what’s going on. Not sure why people listen to a word they say.
They have access to bulletins that you also have access to by simply going on manufacturer websites.
You think gas station attendants know about who’s formulating the newest prime drinks? Or foot locker employees know where Adidas is sourcing their latest runners?
Yamaha OEM piston, rings, and wrist pin is like $160, what manufacturer did you rebuild?
What valves did you use?
He didnt change the valves, just adjusted them. It has stock valves though.
