Quad Rant

In my neck of the woods they always lay down their donuts in the apex of blind corners. The UTV crowd likes to drive on the wrong side of the road, it’s like they want me to die.

Its a HUGE pet peeve of mine of people who spin donuts in parking lots/intersections to make them rough as hell. I mean, we ALL have to drive across it including the dildo who did the donut. Its like standing at the urinal and intentionally missing but you find out you just ricocheted piss all over your shoes. Sure, the restroom floor has your scent trail but so does your Doc Martins.

3 girls lost their lives in the last couple seasons at OW. Those are just the publicized ones I heard about, who knows how many others. One story hit particularly hard. A teenage girl on a dirtbike saw a group of them coming so she pulled off the side of the trail to let them by. One of them couldn't see from all the dust I guess and pulled out of the cloud and took her out. Boom, dead. The Mom posted their family has ridden out there for years and the girl grew up on bikes, had full gear, played by all the rules, looked ahead, saw them coming, got completely off the trail and the kook hit her anyway and kept going. It makes me sick thinking about it. My wife rides, my son and daughter both grew up camping and riding out there. Now my grand daughters are getting to PW50 age, my daughter wants them to have the same experiences and memories she got as a kid, I have a pw in the garage waiting for them, but it scares the living shit out of me. I actually want to find a new spot because of those things. There's an Ocotillo Wells facebook page I'm on. 90% of the posts are from new SxS owners who want to know where to go and where to camp and where the cool stuff is, and like clockwork there's always some brainiac who posts the gps coordinates of every cool thing and trail out there, like by doing that they're showing everyone how cool and experienced they are or whatever I don't effing know. Whatever happened to keeping your mouth shut ?  They're all about getting more people to come out there, and here's where the cool shit is, no exploration, no discovering something unexpected, just instant access to the stuff that used to be hard to find. Freaking kooks. I could go on a 3 page rant. Crusty Demons of Dirt was the first nail in the coffin, the place was off the radar before that video. Then the internet and SxS influx has made it unrecognizable from what it was.  I know, "Old guy talking about the old days" yada yada. But it really is a different climate out there now, and not in a good way unfortunately.

Man, I agree. All my kids were practically raised at OW. My kids knew that place like the back of their hand.  Last time I was there Pumpkin Patch was like the freeway. It used to be single track. Now there's 50 frigging off shoots because people don't want to follow the trail. And forget shell reef.  It really bums me out. I moved to TN, so unfortunately don't get to ride there anymore.

Quads aren't so bad in my area because we only have deserts around here for off road. There are very few single track trails and the ones that are left are so steep and difficult that quads don't even try.

... but SXS are ruining the safety out there. They are big and don't care about blasting across bigger trails because hitting someone on a bike or quad will be just find for the people inside the SXS. I ride with a lot more awareness of crossing all sizes of trails now.

Playing the other side; if it wasn't for SXS many dealerships would have gone under. In Oklahoma, there are many SXS specific parks and seems the big crowds stick to those.

There are some serious quad Mx/ GNCC guys that haul ass & are serious about their sport….but…they ruin Mx tracks…nothing like having to decide what quad rut you want to be in around the entire track…

I’d trade less dealerships, for more public land riding areas any day…I’d drive an extra hour or two to the nearest dealer (rather than 20-30 minutes) every other year to buy a bike, if that meant some of my favorite San Rafael Swell (among others) trails were still open…

I like SxS models. For someone like my wife, who can't hang onto a motorcycle and doesn't want to ride an ATV, it's a way for her to get out with my family instead of sitting at camp all weekend. We're going to pick up a 4-seater someday so my family of 4 can drive around (slowly) at night.

I agree that the Darwin Award knuckleheads need to go.

Motorcycle guys get it. It's the newbies who are perfectly safe and have no situational awareness or "desert etiquette"  don't fly around blind corners, dust out camps, slow down at intersections, they don't know the basic stuff riders have to know to stay safe.   There's no concern for anyone else. (Not ALL of them but enough to make it sketchy if you're not surrounded by a cage.

Lately my wife follows behind our camper in the TRD. We'll cruise that at night or take the non riding folks around in that.  Having a plate makes everywhere accessible which opens up a lot of areas. (Out where we usually go)

When the SxS's hit the market strong about 10 to 15 years I assumed they would be a fad and eliminate themselves, doesn't seem to be the case. They could be the end of us all, surprised we've survived the current aministration.

Quads are the dirt version of sit-down jet skis - because it's hard to ride a dirt bike or stand-up ski when you're hammered.

They allow the low-effort, sit-down-and-drink-beer-while-I'm-riding crowd to commit genocide on everyone and everything near them... and call it "having fun".

Before bikes became popular in my neighborhood we had (and still do, but it’s DESTROYED) motocross track built in the woods, huge triples, giant doubles, whoops, and now the tabletops are all just giant bowls for mud from quads landing weird and taking out huge chunks during muddy days. Ruttings out corners, they even blasted through a nice berm, that had developed amazingly over 40 years, with a banshee, straight into a tree, drunk.

Last weekend a bare ass bro, on a dirt bike in only boots and a ski mask rode a slow wheelie right through our camp. Had a couple families with young kids with us. Another one was wide open everywhere in the dusty ass parking area. Ran the wide open parking lot hero down and had a good chat about being a real dirt biker. We have plenty of Ass hats destroying trails on dirt bikes too. We all gotta call them on it.

Etiquette aside... I am looking to stay as far away from all these trail destroying UTV's and quad people everytime I ride. I am not a fan and wish they'd get TTR or stay fully in the dunes.

Agree  with every quad rant in this thread.

As a former mt bike DH trailbuilder/rider/racer, keeping sport quads off of our trails, in a specific ohv area set aside for us, was a neverending battle.

(The early days up on Windrock mt Tennessee)

I live near a very popular lake for bass fishing.

(Watts bar lake)

Infinite amount of coves.

The fishermen loathe jet skis for the very same reason.

Ripping along shorelines, into every cove, ruining the fishing for hours.

IMO,  sport quads and jet skis allow every non skilled inbred with a credit rating to purchase a vehicle that allows them access to areas the have no business being in.

If you want to fish in peace and tranquility in a secluded cove, do so at daybreak or soon after. I’m unloading my Pro 785, two stroke, triple piped, buoy carver by 11! If I see someone in a cove fishing, I’ll respect about a 100 yard distance but that’s it. Some of these bass guys think an entire 3,000 acre lake is private for their use only.

Hell, Even regular sport quad riders, who are an endangered species, hate those infernal SXS heaps.

SXS idiots and their stupid little cars have destroyed every trail on the east coast as far as i can tell, widening them to interstate width and rutting them three feet down. SXS machines are just idiot boxes.

I feel sorry for the finance companies who are going to end up owning all these sXs's when they go repo.

Yes we hate them and yes they've ruined a lot of good trails.  On top of that, they regularly blast into corners with zero situational awareness; the equivalent of crossing the center line on a country road.  It's a major safety hazard.  I don't ride on anything wider than a 50" trail if at all possible.  Even then, you occasionally get some drunk yahoo who tries to fit his 64" machine down a 50" trail.  Hell, a 50" SXS really doesn't fit down a 50" trail.

There's quad riders who act like idiots too, but they're the ones trying to emulate SXS culture (lighted whips, mud tires, blaring terrible music).  Not only are they annoying, but they purposely tear up muddy/wet areas and/or go off trail.  It's lead to a lot of trail closures.  On top of it all, those mud quads are nauseatingly slow yet get annoyed when you pass them.

We call SXS the "cockroaches" of the desert.

the idiot drivers fly across road crossing with no regard for others , drive down privet roads , and destroy everything in their path  all the while leaving a trail of budlight cans.

SXS will slowly cause the full closure of the desert and open lands.

I was at a OHV in South Carolina last weekend, the trails are all one way and I still almost hit two four wheelers head on with no helmets. The craziest thing about this is they have STOP and WRONG WAY signs on the trails to keep you from going the wrong way they are literally DOT signs that they use on the interstate they are huge signs so they must be great car drivers as well.

But at every hare scramble I race there are plenty of people riding through the parking lot at 40mph between cars I've almost been clobbered by so there is idiots everywhere unfortunately.

Enoree sounds like. lol

Yep, the sit down to ski, sit down to pee riders have done a number on the watercraft industry. Stand up game is still pretty strong though, surprisingly even here in Oregon.

Man I am always wondering this, I dont even know how to get a dirtbike to sound like that. Its like the exhaust is really big diameter but hollow or something its so ear piercing.

Ironically enough the big utility mud tire quads are almost always way more quite even after they put all kinds of bullshit mods on them.

Not exactly.  The motors are actually down on power considerably compared to a CR or YZ.  That's one of the best ways to gain power - drop in an entire YZ or CR motor.  You can keep it stock and gain power.  It was really popular to swap in KX cams for the Kawasaki 450 quad to gain power.  They are detuned due to there being much more load on the motor when used in a quad - more weight and wayyy more tire on the ground.  As far as the loud pipes - I hate them also.  I take that into consideration when upgrading a pipe, some are simply obnoxious, and I won't buy them.

Wonder what the SxS riders hate? Trophy trucks? Dakar Transport races?

Hikers hate MTB, MTBers hate moto, Moto hates quads (well, every one hates quads..) Quads hate helmets and mufflers..

Somewhere there’s a group of barefoot hikers that hate on the shod hikers cause they’re using foot covering technology to ruin OUR trails with unnatural shoe prints, destroying the experience with constant reminders of the industrial world we all live in..

Lotta broad brush gatekeeping here today, and I kinda get it. After 50 years of BMX/MTB/Moto, I recently bought a SxS so the family can do stuff together. We play nice with other users, stay off the small trails and just enjoy being outside together. SXSs have kept a bunch of lifelong moto people out in the dez as we age out of moto for various reasons, and I’m not apologizing for that.

You’re not wrong about a lot of SxS drivers, it’s the new thing that’s brought new people out into the desert. But having tangled with bikes and quads over the years, I’ll go with the “don’t hit ANY other riders” mentality, it can be deadly no matter who you tangle with.

There’s been plenty of new riders, on whatever kind of equipment, doing stupid stuff over my lifetime. The common denominator is “New Riders”, we were all probably aggressive and dangerous in the beginning.

Last Saturday I was out in the SxS and saw a glimpse of something a couple turns ahead, so I pulled completely off the trail and had 3 really fast guys on bikes fly by with no hope of avoiding me had I stayed on trail. Since I spent a couple of decades riding kinda like that, I just waved at them and laughed when visible fear flashed in their riding and eyes. That’s how we learn..

Just remember it takes ALL the skill of sitting on a toilet to "pilot" a quad or steer a sxs

Here in the dirty jerzz we give em a roost bukkake...I really miss my old 500 2t, right tool for the tools...

We also have the sit to pee "watercraft" here, too bad they have some reverse n brakes now, Darwin awards were taking quite a few and scaring most away, now tech keeps them breathing
