I'm glad GH is gone. I've gone just about every year since the 90's and every time I go I tell myself to never come back. The track is cool...it's just the kind of people that show up....total trash and a bunch of drunk A-hole "bros". We (message board geeks) are the only ones that really get into it and enjoy the "racing" part of it. To the rest it's just another excuse to get shit faced and start fights. I do enjoy the hot chicks though....that I will miss.
welcome to any large public sporting/concert event in Southern California.

Bros will always be in attendance.. maybe even bring their blacked out '97 cr250 with cut outs with them just in case..

And the ho's will always be flourishing.. and GH is the best because it's so damn hot!

Sorry, I was away from my computer last night....

There's no way around it: change is never easy. Glen Helen's decision to cancel their 2010 national over the length of their new contract is as surprising as it is disappointing. It leaves us no choice but to move forward and find a new facility in Southern California.

I feel bad for the fans of Glen Helen, as well as the ones who have already made travels plans for Memorial Day weekend. I promise everyone that we will do our best to find a suitable replacement, though the date will now likely be the second weekend in September.

I hope that what MX Sports and the rest of the promoters have managed to do in the last year to raise the quality of the events, the exposure of the series on television and online, to satisfy the riders and their teams, as well as their sponsors and their fans, is not forgotten in this moment of change. This was a business decision made by a longtime promoter, and I respect Mr. Feldkamp's decision not to continue with the series.

MX Sports has a vision of what AMA Pro Motocross should be, and most in the industry seem to agree with what we've done so far. But we have a lot more work to do, and you can count on us to do it.

Don't piss off Bud is the goal for making pro mx thrive or survive? Bud's unilateral demands are okay?
+1.

MX Sports agenda is to grow the sport. Glen Helen's is to protect Glen Helen.

I do agree this is probably the biggest story of the year. Its a big event with a long tradition, longer than James and Chad's careers.

Its even more of a story because so much of the MX press has a vested stake in the outcome. It would be nice to see someone without bias, like Vital, tackle it objectively. Something stinks here.

I think Trip has a valid point. There's no journalism present in MX, even TFS who we all know ruffed some feathers said he wasn't really a journalist, more of a PR kind of guy for everybody (cant remember what he actually said)?

The point is that there's a lot of drama going that would make this place gloom like a nuclear plant if the real shit hit the surface. If Tonay Alessi can became 10 pages, imagine the behind the scenes real crap about Bubba would do? But because this world is so damn small, and there's not enough cash and every body have the their hands in the same pocket we will have this Mickey Mouse journalism. This is an issue in Europe as well.

If I would work in the biz I would probably to became as biased or pretend this GH was no story as well because of the need to pay for the rent next issue. Everybody is getting "bribed" at some point in their lives...

How many doctors isn't making stuff up after being paid by the pharmacy companies?

This is not news I hope, thought this was old shit?

And, to be clear, no other location would be as good as GH. Great track to watch a race. As a spectator, other than the nightmare getting in and out, only Washougal comes close. But the sanctioning org has to look at a larger picture. If one of the tracks had a different vision, after one or two tries they would be gone.

I have to wonder: have people lost perspective on the guy? He grows up doing grunt work to put on events, in the family PROMOTER business. Races, and does fairly well. Starts a magazine on a shoestring and turns it into a major, quality magazine. Works on the side with the GNCC series, extended family does some enduro stuff I think. Puts on the most core race (Loretta Lynns) in the sport, makes it a business without spectators. On the side, does some TV announcing. Puts in a weekly insider column. Still answers his email more promptly than most customer service departments. Has an encyclopedic knowledge of MX history, can tell year, bike, rider, results from a photo. Is a skilled businessman, and steers outdoor MX away from Live Nation and Youthstream, literally because he knows they have only self-interest. Still works a rake at his national. But he has no regard for the sport?

i didnt read all of this but PALA? are you guys serious? that place sucks..and i know for a fact that i can stand in the parking lot and throw a rock over the track, side to side..PALA is an ok place to go practice when the fast guys go there, But that place is far from national caliber....a tilled up COMP Edge would be a way better choice...Fact is there are no other national caliber tracks in So cal...move it to a state with some dirt

my .02

No matter how you look at it, being MX Sports, GH, the traditions... etc. It's a loss

I like what MX Sports is doing and I like GH as a MX track. It's what MX is all about along with all the other MX tracks on the National Circuit and MX Sports has a big role in the future of the sport. Me personally, I would rather go to an outdoor National then a SX. But I grew up racing outdoors from a kid to an adult. SX is fun, but MX is where the sport roots are.

Who knows what happened and why it went poof... hopefully they will sit down, figure out the differences from a business sense, personal, etc... and make it happen in So Cal.

My big question is what are the series sponsors are saying? For example...Lucas Oil is based 30 miles away from GH and they had a big presence in the paddock last year (and at all the Nationals) They also play a big part in the TV package... hopefully they will stick it out and don't say F*CK IT.... will sponsor something else. That would be a BIGGER LOSS since they are behind the sport 100% and are cross promoting the sport within the Lucas Oil empire.

I think people all people are acknowledging he's a lover of our sport, very talented as a mag owner, in general drifty and at the same time manages to be one of us little guys. No one newer doubted DC in that department? I think the critique is about he's being both the major player, owner of a large chunk of the media. Anyone sober should see the dilemma in this? Or you see racer X doing a story about how GH got violated? Smile

I didn't read all of the posts but I plan to when I have a few hours. semi sarcastic.

I find it unbelievable that the track that stepped in at the drop of a hat to save face for America during the Des Nations debacle is the same track that "due to promoter decisions" doesn't care to participate in our nationals.

Is that not logical reasoning?

I think your points are true, and I cannot deny the fact that he has several roles in this. But, relative to others in the sport and industry, he is a role model. There are some who don't like the guy, but I think all of them will tell you he puts the sport ahead of everything else.

Glen Helen is a great event for spectators, and losing it sucks. But there is no villain in this. I am 1000% sure that DC would prefer GH purely from the entertainment perspective. They ditched GH because of a standoff in terms, not to set up some other venue for gain. Sometimes in negotiations, you have to accept certain consequences to maintain an overall vision. MX Sports likely had a list of things they needed to get better TV, advertising, etc. GH said no. Both parties will suffer, fans will too. Sucks. But there is no conspiracy. Hell, if both parties are careful, it can probably work out. I doubt MX Sports wants to go to Piru, or that GH wants to lose a National.

Trip does have a point about the media in this sport . I doubt we will ever find out any more about this situation than what we know now . RacerX is owned by one side and MXA is very involved with the other , so that leaves both of them out . The others are obviously going to play it safe as they normally do , so that will leave the message board fans to thier speculation . At least it will be entertaining . LOL .

GuyB , do you really think this is not a big story ? Cmon ... nobody is buying that .

Just for the record , I dont blame you for playing it safe .

Not in this case he didn't,
Your replies are valid, but the result here is clearly at odds with your statement,
a little bit more information should be forthcoming as to how this was the only possible alternative from someone who made/forced the decision.
If only to clear up what from the information given, reads like a White House/Publicist's briefing.

Ok heres my take on the situation and Ive said it before, as a Sport that wants and needs to grow we need better structure... Davey has come up with HIS best way and evaluated it to the best of his knowledge. IF we all were so smart we ALL would be doing this. Believe me this isnt Daveys first Rodeo!! While my year in Europe I noticed all the respect taken into account for not only the racers but the fans as a whole, permanent structures like; Showers, running water, proper flushing toilets and in some cases a HOTEL... If we ever want to be taken serious by Corporate America and the Companies that we see on a daily basis then we NEED to appeal to them as ALL other MAJOR sporting events do. You think Baseball and Football started with Billion Dollar stadiums?? We all know MX may really never be as big as those sports mentioned but I can assure you that it can be damn close!! The reason SX is appealing is the clean side of things ( I know some of you are going to say have you been in one of those bathrooms.. Yes I have), but when you show these races to Corporate they fall in love with Concrete, pavement and suites, just as they did with NASCAR! I know we will not get to that extreme but we need to take a few pages out of the good old FIM's book of appearance at the races, I know most of you mach, chest pumping Americans will disagree but until you have actually been to one then you really dont know. There you have it folks... Oh and by the way it does suck that GH is gone...for now but whose to say its like that forever?

People on these Boards are what make are sport look dumb. You bicker over stupid shit. You guys should be THANKFUL that we have a Professional MX series still, and that DC and MXSports stepped up to run it. Otherwise the only thing that we might have is the typical cookie cutter SX series going. For christ sake give Credit for him trying to take the Outdoor Nationals to the next level.

A story? Sure. A BIG story? Not really. A normal lifespan for any hot topic (anything Alessi is in a different category all together) is about three days. We'll see how long this one lives.

Doesn't make any of them bad people.

There are undoubtably some things about progress that are negative or painful but in the end it betters the sport.

More sponsors and more TV exposure = Being able to make a living racing MX/SX for more riders and teams.

Every sport goes through it and comes out the other side.

What exactly are these changes that the other tracks have that Glen Helen does not?

You can't tell me that "Chicken Licks" track down in Texas is a better and more well attended than Glen Helen?
