Im 55. I watch a ton of old moto. I wanna go back in time with my 300sx and race . Im reasonably quick . I ride and race with the dude who won the 45 expert class at the world's last November in Glen Helen. He s typically 3 seconds a lap faster. How far back in time do I need to travel to finish top 5 at an ama national. Im thinkin 1976.
Nailed the thread title!
My thoughts exactly 🤣🤣
There's no math formula for that problem...
Do you have a time machine?

You're not beating these guys!
You need to go FURTHER back...
What you talkin about Willis?
I thought the stupid question part was already covered?
Of course he does; why else would he be asking?

Holy mid life crisis
But...He playfully admits it's a stupid question. The Deegan and Jett thread starters don't admit to theirs...
Thanks for posting., As soon as I read the OPs thread, I thought of uncle Rico.
If you could take the 300SX back in time with you…. You will crush those guys on their vintage play dough bikes…. Brilliant…. Can I come with you? I”m sure I would find a way to hurt my knee”s…we can bring Professional 125 for expert coaching advice…
I think it’s a funny question. To answer it and assuming you would have your modern bike, I am guessing early 70’s. Once the long travel came into play the mid-late 70’s Hannah, Smith and crew would be lapping you 10 minutes into the moto. Funny question…not stupid 👍
Sounds like he has been smoking weed like the 70's.
You guys laugh but there is proof of time travel in the iconic pictures thread. The van in the background clearly says motodude.com
I noticed it when I zoomed in on the chick. Safe travels Mr. Willis
Pit Row
Well that pic looks familiar...
You beat me to it
There are no Stupid Questions, only Stupid answers. but this is Very! interesting and I've thought of this same question. At my age and based on my current riding ability and the fact that the Older I get, the Faster I Wuzz! and if I was riding my current 2023 Honda CRF450RWE, I've calculated that I would have to go back to 1977 and I would have shown Marty Smith and the rest of the field on their crummy old Factory bikes of that time a wheel and Won! the 1977 AMA 500cc Championship, based solely on my Superior! motocross bike alone and not having to rely on my mediocre skills to take me to the Checkered flag consistently. Based on the information you provided and the fact that I don't believe you are as good or fast as I am and that you're on a 300 2 stroke, with my Calculations, I believe you'd have to go all the way back to 1972 to be competitive for the title, but Brad Lackey was pretty tough, so that would be hard to calculate.
Thanks guys! I forgot the 40 min plus 2 lap motos. I just did a studded tire off road race today. We did 2 motos. 3 laps each about 38 min total per moto. I was pretty gassed at the end of second moto. Only 1 hr break as well.I know its ridiculous but yes I will be taking my 300 back in time. Tech inspection will be tricky. Efi. Electric start. Disc brakes etc. Im pretty sure a 79 hannah would be 10 seconds a lap faster then me. I dont think the younger generation realizes how fast they were. They watch a min or 2 and say they look like b riders. Watch Darrel Schultz 82 Daytona. He was flying . But a super old school style. Then watch Hansen or Bailey. Very modern. Maybe I should not think out loud? Keep it to myself. Haha
We got this guy “Not Sure”
So that’s who had the keys to millsaps locker
This is not a stupid question.
I watched a video of Farleigh Castle 500 Grand Prix for the early 70's last week, up the famous steps , and honestly , all of those guys looked all over the place, on a track that looked brutal.
Fast forward to now, i have sent a 35 year old 125 up there, as a 56 year old, to double up it when you still had to go for it ( the last 3 years its been easy) to make it from one level to another.
I know the old track was way worse, but even so, LOL
I have seen fat kids on 150 Honda's clear jumps in the Valley at Foxhills that only the Worlds best could manage.
But i will add you this.
When i was 21 and fit(ish) and fast( ish) i got smoked by a kid on an 80 who went on to win GP's
So you were never as fast as you though you were, and that then morphs into being slower than you think you are.
But if you manage to go back, bring some hot chicks, and a load of Radial heads back.
"You were never as fast as you think you were"
Heh heh.... I never thought I was that fast to begin with.
I have. Stupid question. What is a Radial Head? Broken bone above the elbow?
Let's put it this way. How much faster do you think Hannah would be on a 300SX vs his OW? How about 10 seconds faster a lap...hypothetically.
Comparing to an amateur, I'd guess he's 30 seconds faster a lap than you ( or like amateur) on the 300SX.
That puts him 20 seconds a lap faster on his OW vs you on your 300SX.
Might have to go back another decade (the 60's) to run the "pace".
This is solid info. And very analytical. You may be right.
Post a reply to: Really stupid question.
