Ducati 450 front fender wing question..

2/9/2024 11:16am

I think its just made to look similar to other bikes they make.   But who knows. All these years that Ronne Mac has been slicing up his fenders I thought it was just for looks.  But maybe that is what allows him to do the great air wheelies  he can do? That extra scoop effect from cutting the tips off.

How long until a factory rider is complaining about their aero package?  " we just didn't have the right fender on the bike today"  " I came up a little short on that quad, we should have run the version 3 fender instead of the V2."

When I took a streetbike for a ride with my MX helmet. I could feel the visor push my head around. Something that never happens on trails ( a fast dirt road maybe) or a MX track. To me anyway.  Maybe with the right conditions it might have some sort of impact. But I would say its shape is 99.999% branding and looks.

The amount of mud it collects and that extra weight will have more of an impact than the aero. But I would love to be wrong and it be some sort of new evolution in performance.

If any semi-pro would be able to feel something don't you think Cairoli and Lupino would feel it, and tell someone?

Of course the CRs could not compete, they were to busy doing front flips the whole race because of the front number plate. Didn't help that the 81 RM125x is one of the best ever production 125s Wink

Last and best bike I owned! Rider ran out of talent and paid one heck of a price! My fault not her fault...

I had a pair of 1982 RM250z That bike was a unfair advantage it was so fast and the full floater was so far ahead of the other brands. Rode mine from 1982 to 1985 they were so good. When the 86 CR250 came out that one made finally made me upgrade. Didnt Doug Dubach ride his stroked 1980 125x for 4 or 5 years cleaning up in socal night races.

Wouldn't surprise me if its some kind of ram air induction that only opens up on big straights where if can get some proper air in.. has anyone seen the bike in person? Could there be space around the headstock injection to facilitate this?

Testing with cars you had to see well over 100 for any real 'ram air' effect with a very deliberate hardware setup... Even then it didn't do much at all for power, however on some faster runs some cars were showing a little lean on the AFR log, and it turned out they were actually just about making positive pressure (something akin to boost on a turbo engine) and the ECU was making incorrect calculations from the MAP sensor value not being correct (sorted simply by fitting a higher threshold sensor) 😂

Obviously neither of those things comes into play at 50mph.

Did you ever read about how Suzuki infringed on the Full-Floater patent and ended up paying the guy a bunch of money. They eventually redesigned it after a few years to avoid paying him.

The engine is gonna rev to the moon but no way a fender makes a difference unless they're at Talladega or Daytona with the NASCAR boys

Maybe I didn't state it correctly. I mean maybe its enough to feel it in the air but it feels possibly more stable? Almost as if it could act like a wing or even a wind brake if needed.

Nothing wrong with being young and dumb but don't advertise it on Vital everyday. So you are in Minnesota shouldn't you be marching in a George Floyd demonstration.

Aprilia introduced those type reinforced fenders over a decade ago on their GP bikes and didn’t hear any negative feedback from their riders and you know the Euros ride in more mud than the US riders could imagine

Alright, imagine you're playing with a toy airplane, and you decide to tape a big paper fin on the front of it. When you throw it into the air, you notice it flies differently than before. This is kind of like what Ducati did with their new motocross bike; they changed the shape of the front part, which we call a fender.

Just like your toy airplane, the way the bike moves through the air can change based on how this front fender is shaped. If the fender is big, small, wide, or narrow, it can make the air move around the bike differently. This can make the bike go faster or slower, and even change how easy it is to control when it's jumping and flying through the air for a little bit.

Ducati probably spent a lot of time thinking and testing how to make their fender just right so that the bike performs better when it's racing, especially in the air. It's a bit like science magic – they use computers to test how air moves around different shapes to find the best one.

So, just like your airplane experiment, changing the shape of something can make it fly through the air in a new and possibly better way. Ducati is hoping their new fender helps their bike do just that!

Same with the air tunnel front plate on the 81 YZ125. We put on a mesh/vented plate over that monstrosity Cool I have seen a couple of those on ebay that were pulled off when new and they went for big $$$ on ebay. Wink

To me, studying the pictures and looking at the fender's contours in relation to the radiators, it looks like they are simply splitting the air headed toward the front number plate, and directing it toward the radiators.

This.

Ducati is always about max hp first. Then they think, hey how do I get this power to the ground, how do I make this bike turn and holy smoke why am I baking here?

They get so much power out of their engines that they need to shed a lot of calories, maximizing cooling is a concern. Aero isn't just about top speed.

Back on the subject, I think it would help keep the front end down on the starts and save all the weight and complexity of a holeshot device.

And I’m not joking a bit😃
