Could Eli Tomac top MC's 72 wins?

All comes down to longevity, but If he races 3 more SX seasons, I think he can do it. When asked the question whether the injury had prolonged his career another year or 2 at the pre-season press conference he had a bit of a grin and mentioned that there is potention for that.

Since 2017 he has averaged 7 wins a season. He is 21 back of MC right now.

Everyone is talking about Jett, but not a mention of the Alien.

Poll

If he races 3 more seasons does he get it done?

I would love to see him make a run at it and without last years injury it was probably possible but not now. He won’t race past this season or maybe next tops and even so, 7 wins a season in this field seems unlikely. I would love to be wrong though.

I think Jett got "72 wins" mixed up with that myth about "72 virgins"....

No, even if he races through 2026 it's too much to ask in this field and at his age.

It's definitely within reach.  I've been saying this for a while. I hope he goes after it!

He definitely can; will he want to try? I don't think so and in my uninformed opinion don't think that drives him. I think that someone that knows better (Uptite?) said that he has to figure out what he wants to do. He's in an enviable position to be one of the best racers in the world and I guess he has to figure out what "after" looks like and when he wants to pull that trigger.

Unfortunately, no. He would have to race at least 4 more seasons. Not happening.

As a big time Tomac fan I say no. If he gets 60 I will be shocked and pumped...I believe this is his last year though.

I would love to see him do it. I think it's possible. But will only get harder as Jett gets better and Chase figures out how to stop tucking the front.  Hard to say with the little bit so far. But it looks like he's still good for some more wins.  You just never know when Jett or Chase will figure it out and go on a streak like RC in 01.

Would be cool to see Eli get 73 and tie in the FMF sponsorship with some special edition.

And give Jett and Chase a bigger # to chase. Wonder who else will end up being in there in the next 3 or 4 years.    Imagine when the Deegan brothers are both out there racing. If You guys think we hear alot about the Lawrences , just wait.

It's his 12th year in the class, so he's averaging 4.6 wins/year.

I can't believe this is even a topic. If the fluke injury didn't happen to Tomac last year he would have had another SX championship and we probably would not see him this season. He probably would have retired. HIS WORDS. Last year left a bad taste in his mouth. He's one of the highest paid in the sport. That doesn't' matter to him. He has a lot of titles, wins and podiums. That's not what fuels him. And he certainly is not in it for fame or attention. He wants to go out on his own terms. Win or lose. Very admirable. So, after a period of thought he decided to come back for one more SX season. I think as a fan base we are so lucky to see him one more year. Hopefully he can win a few more of these events this year and if things really go well, he can win the title and pray he does the Nationals. But he's not going to break Jeremy's record. I don't think we will see that broken. Not with the 4 strokes and so many more competitive teams/riders and the attrition needed today and going forward. Tomac is in the conversation as one the best our sport has seen and, on some occasions, he might have been the fastest man on the planet with that insane beast mode WFO!! And did it with pure class.

I'm sure he enjoys the accomplishments.  It's within reach, and it might add another $10 million to his bank account in the process.

So, let's wait and see.  I think that as long as he's competitive AND having fun, he'll continue.

Plus, the closer he gets to 73, the more of a motivation that'll be.

I agree he doesn't mind the money and is motivated by the wins but if you think he's motivated to hang around to try and get the record, you haven't been following this or him. Let's be realistic here!!  We are talking 22 wins. 22 more wins in this current period of the sport. With this field and the way the sport is it's a long shot. Especially for a guy who's said he's about done. I'm a huge Tomac fan. love everything about him. Maybe he will win 10 events this year and win the title and come back next year to repeat for big money and win 7 events and another title and then come back to get the record!!! LOL.

Sign me up. I'd love to see it. But it's not happening and this is a foolish topic. If wins a few more events, awesome!!! And if not, I'm still glad he came back from one more. Let's just enjoy it all

Winners don't care about others accomplishments, numbers, or money. Their primary competitor is themselves, that is what makes them champions. No doubt Tomac is comfortable where he is in the patheon of his niche sport, and has respect for his current competitors and past champs. Never at any point in his career did he mention past champs deeds as his goals, nor did Distefano, Bradshaw, Johnson, Ward, MC, or RC, James, or Reed. It didn't matter to them, they paddled their own canoes.

Throw MC out of the window, I'd like to see if anyone else tops Eli's win total. Breaking 50 wins is a tough shot for anyone that's out there today or coming up from the 250's..

First thing that I thought of with the Jett hoopla and 72, how about getting in the same win zip code as the current guys out there racing against you first.

This kind of thing is an insult to MC.

Tomac is definitely one of the greats, but it’s not gonna happen.  And Jet isn’t going to match Tomacs win record.

Are triple crown wins considered 3 separate wins or just 1 for the overall?

Also I don't think Tomac or likely anyone will touch the record honestly. The level of competition has grown exponentially. Back then it was some semi fit dudes cruising around a track having a good old time. Today it's 20 fit dudes with bikes that are way too fast racing at least 10 other dudes that could win on any night. Different league today IMO

How do you know, do you have a crystal ball, are you from the future, are you leading the fantasy league?

Eli Tomac competes for himself. When he’s satisfied, he’ll walk away. He really does not care to have a record in my opinion.

I'm leading the fantasy league and I approve of his comment ha ha (sorry, had to do it while I can).  But seriously, no one knows.  I'm a huge Tomac fan and I don't think he'll do it.   Too much competition currently.  I don't think Tomac will race that long.  He doesn't unleash beast mode as often rather choosing the slow (figuratively) and steady approach.  No idea with Jett, but usually the future doesn't unfold exactly like you think it will.

I’ll tell you how I know, first the field is deeper with more racers that take their craft more serious than the majority of riders during MC’s days.  Second, I hope I’m wrong, but I personally feel we are seeing a crack in the armor of Jet and he’s going to self destruct, and that is why he will not match or even beat Tomacs record.

Good job on the fantasy points lead!  The leader should get a red plate!
