RJ is super friendly now. Not sure about in the 80s, but he is an absolute class act today.

Reed was one of the nicest guys i met. Back in 03 i seen him in the pits after the race. i was only a young pup so i was super excited. Gave me his goggles, let me sit on his bike for a photo with him and then showed me around the Yamaha Semi. Core memory for myself

Usually the guys at the track that are just on the cusp of local pro but aren't quite fast enough to get around everyone cleanly on a practice day.

RJ was a great guy to idolize as a kid.  He always seemed to try hard to be an example for the kids.  Strong Christian......Nice guy when i met him at Red Bud in 1988.  I was a yound kid and he took the time to talk to me.  He is the opposite of what we are looking for with this thread.

Huge RJ fan!

It's not really fair to judge a racer off of 1 quick interaction. Imagine trying to just get dinner or run in and out of a store quickly and having people constantly wanting to talk with you and asking for stuff.  Now imagine that while also under the stress of being in a title fight, or racing for a contract, riding injured, etc.

I'm sure there are some racers that are not nice. But overall I think most of the top guys are decent people.  It sucks that most people only get a few minutes of time when they meet a rider. If even that long. Hard to really get a feel for how somebody is that quick.

Hahaha... yes, the ones that are trying to win practice and aren't good enough to get around a novice without taking themselves out.

Had one of these guys revving the shit out of his bike at me right after McGrath blew the doors off me on a straightaway at Cahuilla, as if I were holding him up from keeping up with the king 😭😭😭

Jeff Ward was friendly when I attended races in the late '80s.  Brad Lackey was super cool when I had a chance to talk to him while he was setting up his t-shirt sales stand at an endurocross here in Denver a decade or more ago. I would not add them to the list.

My dad caught RJ trying to slip out the gates at the Seattle Kingdome to avoid all the crowds back in 88, it was right around my birthday in February, I was 7. He asked RJ to get a pic with me, he was literally my hero at the time. RJ did it, with a smile, and was an awesome dude to my dad and I.

So I can't put him on this list. Jeff Ward was the only dude that was ever straight up rude to me.

Larry Ward, on the other hand, is the coolest dude I've ever talked to in the pits. Always gave me stuff. Tires, goggles, gloves, grips  anything he had on hand. Lol.

gotta disagree about Hannah... Arrogant? Yes... Asshole...nah...

In '84 or '85, Hannah's last year racing, I went to the Gatorback National. After the races, we were getting autographs and this really hot chick wanted Bob to sign her shirt. He asked where, she said anywhere... Bob grabbed a handful of tit (they were big 'uns) and signed right across it...I'm 12-13 years old and thought he was a god...lol. He was absolutely the coolest cat in the pits... 2nd was the Dogger... The golden days of American MX!

They’re all good guys away from the track lol, but they’re salty when it comes to racing. We can all talk about the nice guys, but there’s also the other guys. 😎

Not exactly MXers, but I've known a few mini dads who were definitely a-holey.

Funny thing about Reed is I've heard as many people mother efff him for being rude as I've heard that he's had beers with. I think Matthes is the one who said Reed has got drunk with more fans than any other racer.

Bottom line these guys are working when fans want their time and some of them need to have their game faces on. Remember MC would have probably had a perfect season if he would not of let so many people have access to him in St. Louis.

I was at mammoth in 88, Hondas had rear disc for only two years and i didn’t understand brake fade. He let Brian Lunniss help me out and I thought that was pretty cool. So not in my a-hole category, could have told me to F off but was really nice.

My guess by saying Ping is it's a blatant suck up or that the poster is polar opposite from Ping in politics and my guess is he has never talked to him in his life.

It's hard to know . Cause when you meet them ,maybe they are having a bad day . I've been lucky to meet loads and loads of GP guys . RC, JS ,RV and a few other US riders . The only riders that were dicks were Ben Townley. Met him twice was an A hole both times . But I've heard loads say he is sound . And Billy Mckenzie complete A hole . I know so many local riders that are so arrogant, cause they win the local A race . Then you meet ie. RV  and he is dead sound .MX is great that way imo.

Wasn't Bradshaw really cool to the fans? Yeah he's ran into his competitors and threw rocks at the media but fuck them lol.
