Do they have all the parts you need in stock?  I know KTM has had some serious parts shortages, but not sure if Gas Gas is affected as well.

To be fair if a 4 stroke motor let go like the OP's did it would be more expensive to repair.

That was an unusually catastrophic failure. I've had cranks go before but never with that much collateral damage. And a four stroke would still be more; cylinder head 4stroke $ >> two stroke cylinder head.

I’m sure a lot of us have been rebuilding it in our mind. I’ve already looked up parts here and there 😎

I've never seen a 2 stroke do anything, even remotely close to looking like that.  My expert opinion is that you had a mud dauber nest in the exhaust and you tried drift starting it by jumping it off your house.   How else could that happen? That is crazy.

It was scary hahaha, happened in the air right when I went to rev it before I hit the ground, it made the gnarliest sound ever, sounded like every bolt in my bike just exploded out

Best thing I’ve read in this thread…

Stoked that you’re OK.

I'm bummed for your explosion.

I've stayed out of this because it could be many things in my estimation.

Like a wrist bearing going and it stacks rollers or something. I burned a bunch of 125's, seen weird things. Yours wins. Congratulations.

Like Manny said, I'm happy you can talk about it.

Don't you still have all the original 250 parts from that bike to use on this blown up bike?

No we do not, we put the 300 after I blew that bike up (not near as bad) but we needed new cylinder and all that so we just got the 300 kit

I do the NGPC series and honestly for the type of racing it is I’m not really a fan of it, it’s cool for moto so that’s why I made it my practice bike but I think when we get it fixed it’ll stay a 250.

We’re also pretty disappointed with GasGas not helping us at all so we’re kinda ready to get back to Yamaha 🤣

Does anyone seriously think it would be any different with a Yamaha?   You think they would help anyone out on a blown up 2 yr old YZ250 with over 100 hrs?

I’m really close with a dealer that’s the only reason I’d get some help 😂

I have been around dirt bikes for 50 years and I have never seen a catastrophic failure like this before on a Yamaha, Honda, Kawasaki, or Suzuki. If anyone else has, please post pics.

If you have any problems getting parts for a good deal, let me know via pm.

I had a very hard time finding aftermarket engine parts for that thing. OEM are hard to find also and way too expensive.

With two catastrophic metallurgical failures, I would not rebuild with OEM. It would almost be worth it to put a YZ engine in it.

How many base gaskets are you running to get the proper squish clearance when you replaced the top end? Clearance Looks pretty tight

average squish on ktms are over 1.5mm. Average base gasket to get correct deck height at 0-.1mm is 0.5-0.6mm. Even if he ran no base gasket from a setup that needed 0.6, he'd still be left with almost 1mm of clearance and he would have detonation that he would of noticed first wot pull on the track. I don't think it has anything to do with a clearance issue.

Yeah a YZ ain't gonna blow like that. Even if it did, parts are plentiful and reliable.

I wonder if they pushed the bore offset towards the front of the engine?

I would say most likely the metallurgy is not up to Japanese standards but I can't prove it.

I've seen carb 2022 ktm 250sx do this so I don't know if this problem was isolated to just the last year carb 250s or if it's just odd luck. On tbi bikes I've just seen piston failures that wipe out cylinder but I heard that was a bad batch of vertex pistons that had slag in the ring groove on early 23's not so much on ktm itself. Haven't heard any 24's with issues like that.

That being said I had a buddy with a 22 yz250 2t have the cylinder Crack right down the side with less then 20 hours Yamaha didn't do squat.

This pic was on a 22 250 sx had that didn't have much time on it. However it was jetted lean, was running race gas and not motorex oil so when ktm learns this kinda stuff it's hard for them to cover it. Ktm did make good on it to a point and covered some stuff. Still kudos that they did something at least for a year old bike at the time. Hope u get situated. Sometimes it comes down to dealing with a good local dealer that has good communication with the mfg and willingness to help as much as they can. In closing, as my dad says if it has tits or wheels it's gonna give you problems 😂

Plug wasnt super white but looked lean enough when we took it out. As for crank bearings they looked burnt too one more so then the other, think the bushing one ? I'll see if I can find those in my pics.
