Was just watching a replay of MXoN and realised any time Kenny gets out front the commentators (in particularly JT) bang on about his "fast twitch" muscles.
I hate to start a thread over this and no I'm not trying to farm downvotes (and they will come), but when he says this I always face palm...and enough for the very rare occasion I actually start a thread.
No JT, fast twitch muscles (if Kenny actually has an abundance of these), have nothing to do with Ken's early moto speed.
An abundance of either type is genetic and fast twitch abundance is only advantageous in situations requiring short term explosive power, eg sprinting, power lifting etc.
Ken's sprints go a lot longer than any fast twitch advantage would give...what he has is skill.
/dumgeon.
Fast twitch muscles can work in any sport. For Mx you only use them in spurts. It’s the biggest advantage there is. Retired Packer players hv a warehouse where they retrain the muscles of rich kids. To get an advantage in sports to get a scholarship. I was born with extreme twitch muscles. I think being beaten, kicked & especially forced to grab a weed burning electric fence really improved it. The fence has a billionth of a sec that it’s not skin burning. 11-18 I,ll be 57 & still super quick.
I’m pretty sure JT uses it as an analogy 🤷♂️

My old lady says I have a fast twitch muscle.
Imagine if his legs were also a tiny bit longer, for leverage, he'd be unbeatable.
har!
Finally, someone that understands how fast twitch muscles work. Fast twitch muscles don’t help you sprint on a motorcycle, they help Tyreek Hill come off the line in a foot race.
Kenny has good sprint speed because of early race intensity, and his brains ability to process information quickly, early in the race.
Ok, got it! Thanks for this.
I gotta say I think the same when he says that and someone should fill him in. If he means it as an analogy, then he could just say Kenny has good sprint speed.
I've developed a nervous twitch reading this thread.
Hopefully it's a fast one.
Not that I know anything about Ken,s physic but I would say his fast twitch muscles hv something to do with extremely quick moves in technical sections. I don’t think his brain is operating 400% faster. Ride a gear or 2 higher wo. Your body reacts to super quick situations . I think it’s cool that JT brings the fast twitch up. It’s good for the sport & good for the rider. Remember they always said Jeff Ward could squat 500 lbs and easily lift a piano. Then you watch him race & think wow look how strong he is. Everyone wanted to get stronger. What if quickness was the big rage instead of toes in talk. Nobody going Mach 5 is thinking toes in & there body position. If you didn’t hv the correct body position you would’ve crashed already.
You are a wild dude Pro, I never have any idea when you're joking or serious, but you crack me up and I've always got respect the CR 125 enthusiasm, have a good one 👍
Jt you can always count on Vital for a good “learning lesson” as RC would say
I believe that the same type of fast twitch muscle movement that allows a sprinter to explode off the starting line is the same stuff that provides very quick micro movements on a motorcycle, such as making a dirt bike change direction or the micro movements that keep a bike tracking around a rut. It's basically what separates young people from old people. Kenny probably does focused training for this stuff to retain what he naturally had when he was a teenager.
I believe it's also why a frail looking skinny kid can go blindingly fast on a dirt bike....reflexes, which are mostly fast twitch muscles.
So, in my opinion, JT is absolutely right.
You say a lot of crazy stuff, but you pretty much nailed this one.
I just used some fast twitch muscles dropping the kids in the pool. Entertaining read.
100% correct. My nephew ran cross country the next yr he signed up for 100m and a relay team. His 100m time was 10 sec off. He went to the x packers speed training co. They focus on creating fast twitch muscles. He made the team it works. I haven’t done anything in 20 yrs. Bored I would go to an indoor batting cage with 80-90 mph pitches. Swing late & try to connect. In summer an out door cage . With moisture on the balls the pitches r all ovr. A old European guy at the y was standing in front of a mirror. And raising his arms fast & snapping his fingers closed. I was stretching for 20 min & kinda watching. I laughed & said what you doing trying to snap invisible flies out of the air ? He said I had a stroke & couldn’t move my left side. He was getting his left side firing. So I think it’s possible for anyone to improve quickness .
Pit Row
I also kinda scratched my head at the fast twitch thing, even if it was just an analogy. Ken's first lap speed simply shows how he's one of the most talented riders in the world, shame he never had the best fitness in the world to go along with it.
A fast twitch body is for quick explosions. You hv to hold back monitor how many times you squeeze the trigger. Or you’re out of amo. Cold windy weather like here. The body tightens up real bad. You get more muscle injuries too. 90-112 and muggy is perfect . Think about the hottest race ever 97 Troy,Ohio. 6,1 135 lb Damon Huffman beat RC when no one could. And Damon Lives in a dry dessert state. Troy a busy jumpy track.
So let's identify talent. What exactly is that? What is exactly is skill? Its too easy to just say no that's not what's happening, the guy is just talented. Talent is a combination of certain traits, whether it is racing a dirt bike or playing a piano.
I think when start trying to identify what causes what it becomes more clear.
Every time you react to a situation with force in a milliseconds time, you are using fast twitch muscles, i.e. when you see a downed racer in front of you or someone takes the line you wanted and you have to switch your path on pure reflexive instinct, or when the gate drops and you go from a dead stop to WF,O. The question is how advantageous is it to have better fast twitch muscles, and at what point of the race would this be most beneficial? Those questions are subjective on who you are and your experiences. The benefits of fast twitch muscles at the start is a no-brainer. Imo, having good decision-making skills, quick reflexes, AND fast twitch muscles produces someone like KR; not only with his starts but with his first few laps as well.

Fast twitch muscles are absolutely a thing and many in here are spewing off without actual knowledge of the subject. The fast twitch muscles are simply the little muscles that support the larger muscle. If you ever go to a gym and see a guy working out on machines vs free weights you may understand the concept better.
Foundation training is excellent in this area and it enables your body to work properly instead of muscles working overtime to over correct another weak muscle source. The more you work the little muscles that support your large mass the faster reactions you will have. They also fatigue quicker and rely on the larger muscle groups after a period of time. Jason Thomas who has trained his entire life professionally knows what he is talking about.
Oh man almost forgot I started this thread.
And yeah I have a hangover.
Anytime I hear that phrase Burr plays in my head immediately
Gotta love when people on Vital get bothered whenever somebody is wordy and tries to explain a thought that they have in good detail.
