Not the fox kit, is there a thread on here of general factory badassery?

A car forum I used to go on occasionally had a motorsport parts thread as a sticky, reserved for legit and 'proper' factory or top professional level motorsport parts and pieces.

It only saw occasional posts, which was good and it was, by design, kind of selective to keep it to the real trick and rare or unobtainable stuff.

If someone could point me in that direction or if anyone better placed to kick one off wants to fire one up in the relevant sub-forum, it could be cool? 🤷

Talking proper GP, AMA MX and SX stuff, genuine HRC, KHI, Yamaha, good old days Suzuki factory stuff, Ti, Magnesium, Carbon and Kevlar, bespoke or limited run or prototype stuff, etc. Moreso parts than bikes, to keep on topic, but link to a bike thread if you like, it's just kinda cool to spotlight parts and stuff gets attention in its own right that people may otherwise gloss over.

The kickass two stroke thread in the HOF should have a lot of what you’re looking for.

The early 80’s were pure gold for trick stuff.

I was watching the teams prep bikes on a friday prior to a national in 1980. Nearly every part on those bikes was some unique hand made item. The rear suspensions, Uni-Trak, Full Floater, and Pro Link weren’t in production yet (Kawi maybe?) but all the factory bikes had them. Water cooling was new. All the plastics were different for the factory bikes.

Yeah man, good call and that is a badass thread 👍

Kind of like that but more focused / detailed.

I guess bikes are more accessible / easier to see what's what whole looking at the bike as a whole Vs looking at a car with panels and stuff in the way so it may not be worthwhile, the Two Stroke thread and Tokyo Tiddlers thread and socials for folks like DocWob and Stormworks Garage and individuals like Chuck Davies have some real cool stuff around.

The last true works bike in the US was 1985...

image-20231004225641-1

The production rule was introduced in 1986, the only other full works bike was Doug Henry's YZ400F, every other bike has been production based

There were some full works bikes in Europe, but they disappeared in the 1990's when most teams shifted to production or pre-production based bikes.

The only remaining place for full works bikes is Japan, where they race pre-production bikes before they are raced in Europe.

@Tokyo Tiddler is building a 2000 Honda RC250M, which has some interesting parts...

Real, honest-to-gawd Honda factory bikes in the 80's were the coolest...and most beautiful bikes ever! Back then, Honda had the money to buy the trickest equipment...and the best riders.

Trick you can’t leave the 04 cr125 DBP out of the talk.  Carting choice engine was the 04 cr125 for many yrs.  Unique stuff like it has its own air boot to handle the double boost explosion of intake air pressure.  Manuly precision adjustable then 24 bit computer controlled pv system. Frame up grades with a beefier swingarm. 1st yr of inner honed forks like the works bikes.

Everything on the 1985 RC250M was unique, nothing was production based, the 04 CR125 DBP has some trick parts, but it is a modified production bike.

That would have been awesome,

I remember Cycle News had an in depth colour artical on Mike Bell OW. I read that article a hundred times

One of the very few present day works bikes - but won't see an MX track:

A few other "recent" ones come to mind:

Evgeny Bobryshev's 2012 Honda 450, this engine with right side exhaust port, left side header and dual air boot never saw production:

web2012 Honda 3 800-648x411

This KX450 was raced in Japan with a non-perimeter, backbone style frame. I heard it worked great but broke?

You wouldn't need a GPS map to navigate an MX track!

That RM is awesome Mav 👍

Mxav8r, nice work man, you've got some time in that bad boy! I need to find myself some anodized alloy banjo bolts, always a proper cool little touch.

Great Honda content too, can't argue with the might of HRC 💪

Another trick Honda is the RC250MA Honda raced in Japan in 1991, automatic gearbox, it's on display at the Honda Collection Hall, in Motegi, Japan, next to Jeremy McGrath's 1996 CR250...

A few parts I’ve collected

JGR adjustable link with rear holeshot device and titanium bolt

IMG 2644 4

KYB extra wide billet fork lugs and axle

IMG 2156.jpeg?VersionId=KuwlH.F8JSS271d

this isn’t a factory part but I think it’s pretty slick. This is a ktm master cylinder with map switch on my YZ. I wired it to take place of the bulky yellow selector switch for a vortex ignition.
