AMA Grand National Motocross Championship

Then they would have a history of past champions and it wouldn't be like how WSX claims RC is aa past champ. Maybe Wrangler would be up for being the title sponsor again.  That was what they called the  person with the most overall points back when they gave out a title for it right? It was a little before my time, but I remember seeing it in old magazines and MXA keeping it alive for years after it was no longer an AMA thing.

I Like it or SMX Finals . Play offs sound like the sport is trying too hard.  I know nothing about Football, or any of the sports that are played with a ball. But they seem much more involved and harder to understand than a race that the winner is the person with the most points collected from 2 motos. Or that the winner of the Main event wins that nights race. It seems like there should be no need to dumb it down at all. Should be pretty easy to understand after watching a race or 2.    And then after years of dumbing things down to cater to the new fans, we have  the "play Offs"   that  have had to be explained  over and over in multiple threads. And this is the new approach to bringing new fans in.

I think like with F1 and the show that brought people into it. Highlighting all the great things the hardcore fans love about the sport and getting those things in front of new fans would be a great way of bringing in fresh viewers. Most of us love Motocross because its not other sports. Why keep trying to change things to make it more like those things? All of that aside, I think that SMX is great for the sport. It is getting a bunch of money into the hands of more riders and I think that SMX also helped the Nationals end with riders coming back in to the series after sitting out most of it. I think that if not for the SMX races and the money , some of those riders may have just sat out and got a head start on SX prep.   I hope that they stick around for years. Its good to have both SX and MX working together .

all i know is “play offs” is retarded because we don’t play MX SX or SMX… it’s a motorsport not a team stick and ball sport or crapcar!

Grand National Championship is the only thing that makes sense.

Grand National Championship.

It has history as a part of the sport and represents the combination of the two disciplines.

I'll never understand why they didn't just do that in the first place. Super Motocross sounds like something a 4 year old would come up with.

The AMA still owns the trademark...

I agree, but if they are going to market SMX as a world championship they can't really put "national championship" in the title.

I don’t care what it’s called.  I just want to watch racing on TV and hang out on social media and talk a bit it.

When motocross decided to go indoors, I wonder what the discussion was like when coming up with what to call it.

Was Supercross the only option or was there other names being talked about?

Then after settling on Supercross, was it well received?

Also, where did the "cross" part of the name come from? Motor/Moto makes sense but why add cross?

For the record, I am more than happy with motocross and Supercross and couldn't imagine it being called anything different.

It was called the Superbowl of Motocross - obviously continuing to call it the Superbowl was a big no-no, and I believe MXA coined the term SuperCross (dropping the "bowl of moto" and keeping the "Super" "Cross")

I've always heard the Cross stood for Cross Country.

Yeah cross refers to racing cross country which essentially means racing on anything but a road.

Oh I got it.

Since it's a wild couple of rounds between racers. Why not "Race War" or "Race Riot"?

Or since it is a race series to decide the proper ranking of riders who are exclusively men "Male Order Rides"
