Forgive my ignorance on this but can lappers get any sort of fine or penalty for not moving over when the leaders come up behind them?
I realize the rider that held up Chase in that second moto is a rookie but there were blue flags flying right in front of him for two corners in a row and he stayed in the main line.
If there aren’t penalties, should there be? Would fines or some sort of slap on the wrist make any difference?
Pretty sure chad reed was penalised when he held up dungey in sx , a few corners is a bit different tho
Lappers are not supposed to move out of the way they are supposed to hold their line until the leaders pass.
Agreed, but at the same time as a lapper it’s probably best when the blue flags are waving to STAY OUT OF THE MAIN RACING LINE. That was absolutely frustrating to watch.
I don’t race but I ride a lot of open practice days. I have always been told by my friends who do race and are a hell of a lot faster then my to just hold my line and faster people will pass me. I know it only practice but I would think it would be the same in a race. The one time a 8 year old kid decided he would try to get out of my way I ended up with 4 screws and a plate holding my tibia together.

I agree. I think it's safer to just hold your line. Changing your line abruptly to get out of the way could be dangerous.
I hope you healed up well!
But it’s also possible to get out of the way without abruptly changing the line, but that will of course take some awareness of the situation and surrounding.
Too many riders on track, no need for 25 guys 5-10 seconds off per lap.
As annoying as it is when they’re in the main line, the alternative is worse. Having lappers moving all over the place would be disastrous.
Same shit happened to Chase @ Unadilla. Not sure what these clowns are thinking but GTFO of the way. Kudo's to the riders making an effort to not effect the race between the leaders.
Bro he was moving all over the track and staying on the gas in the racing line for way too long after he just got passed by the leader. Much easier to get off the gas for a second or two. A lot safer than getting bonzied if you ask me. I am sure the ninnies won't agree.
It looked to me that chase cut the track intentionally to get by that lapper in the second moto
If you are racing for position of riding PRACTICE. I wonder if they feel the same way when they are racing for a win and a lapper screws them. I doubt it.
NPC's are part and parcel to the game of life be it Motocross or a Social Media Page, they be everywhere. If their programed to hold their line or wonder or to make inane comments they exist

Well they could penalize him with a minute and he'd still be in second
Rider was Bryce Shelly #434, not that much of a "rookie" finished 20th in 2nd moto, he saw Jett come by, he see's blue flags, he totally held Chase up, this has become a major issue in the sport. Don't know the answer moving forward however it seems those whom make the rules should be proposing a fix. I suggest collaborating with Teams and Riders will be key.
Part of the problem is the flaggers are waving the blue flag at them constantly once the leader gets within about ten seconds or so. For the rest of the race. So even if you’ve been lapped and second or third is another 20-30 seconds back, you’re getting blue flags every section. Which means when they do come around, the rider might not know they’re actually there.
I think that largely depends on how early they see the blue flags. They are in races themselves, and if the mainline is the fast line, I'd want to use it as much as possible. Lappers are moving obstacles, and in my opinion, add to the racing. Part of being the best is the ability to navigate around them, anticipate where they're going, and use them to block your competitors.

"Hey, they paid an entry fee, too."
I understand your point, but what if the lapper is in the points, in 20th place for the first time ever, he sees the blue flag and gets out of the way, then the guy in 21st stays in the main line and passes him?
As much as we're all glued to the race at the front, MX isn't a one on one sport. Everyone's battling (or should battling) for position the entire 30+2.
I think it also makes the racing more exciting. I'd rather see the rule "hold your line', than "get the F out of the way".
What bothers me more than seeing the top riders held up, is for a lapper to slow to a crawl, and get completely off the track.
The exception for me is the last race of the year, and the points are super close. I've seen in the past where even super fast guys who weren't in the chase were getting out of the way. I thought that was super respectful.
In the words of the GOAT " The blue flag means there is a race going on and you ain't in it".
Then the riders are not respecting the blue flag by being self aware.
Hahahaha. Yeah, was that Hannah that said that? I remember that back when. I was cracking up.
Not sure how so many got on this lappers get out of the way. Doesn’t matter what kind of racing, you hold your line.
I think it’s the broadcast perhaps. I always remember Langston being frustrated that lappers weren’t respecting the blue flag but I guess I am misunderstanding the rule.
Seems ridiculous to type this but just to clarify; yes I know Langston is no longer part of the broadcast 😂
Does anyone know if vohland ended up getting penalized for his track cutting/retaliation attempt thing he pulled?
That move left Weege absolutely speechless 😂
I would say anybody who is racing to win a pro mx feels the same way. Obvious to me something the poster has no experience with.
I used to race locally but blue flags were never a thing. Always would hold my line if someone faster than me was coming up behind but wasn’t sure if blue flags meant get out of the main line.
At the end of the day, lappers are not to blame for Jett’s perfect season…
