I'm curious to know if there is an agreed upon best 250 2-stroke racer from the 90s or 00s, particularly with good form and technique. Would like to watch some old footage and see what good riding looks like when these were the top bikes.
Would also be interested in modern bikes/racers too, if any come to mind with plenty of video.
Have you seen the footage of Bubba on that KX250?
RC comes to mind…
Pichon was good!
McGrath
Carmichael
Reed
McGrath, hands down.

Stew
Rc
The rest
He said good form and technique, Everts, Pourcel, Picton, Reed.
Bubba didn't have good technique?
Rc won every outdoor title when he lined up in one , and was the last sx champ on one too
Then that would be JMB.
I would still say:
Stew
RC
The Rest
Good form and techniques are relative. If we are talking modern era, then Stew by a long shot. Considering what he went up against is even more of a consideration.
RC won a shit ton on them. But his riding style was atrocious 😆
Bubba was an animal but MC and Reed had excellent technique. I’m too young to comment on Bayle but from the one video I did see he was solid. Windham also.
The OP is casting bait. But since we’re biting, I’ll throw Stanton’s name into the mix.
The "best" form and technique is subjective. Is there any lab tests that show the most ideal position for moto? In F1, moto gp, etc they do tests to find the most efficient rider position. As far as I'm aware, nobody has done that in MX. Riders with "bad" technique have won tons of races, and riders with "good" technique have also won tons of races. But RC didn't have textbook technique and won a lot more than KDub, who did.
I think Bubba is grouped in with RC as being this wild rider just hanging off the bike. I think his technique is overlooked because of all his get-offs. He had great technique. Until he didn't if you know what I mean lmao
One of the best technique riders especially in the ladder half of his career. And crashing doesn't have much to do with technique at that level, look at Sexton.
Musquin
1) McGrath
2) Bubba
3) Reed
4) TP199
5) RC4
Ezra Lusk I always thought had amazing style on the 2 stroke.
little too young to keep going back to the OG's of our sport. But I'm sure them older riders prior to the 90's had some amazing rides that you would of had to see in person to appreciate
I'm not dissin Stew, but he rode flat footed.
Carmichael.
Championships:
00 MX, 01 SX, 01 MX, 02 SX, 02 MX, 03 SX, 03 MX, 05 SX.
Pit Row
perfect season on a 250, hard to top that.
Nah, not baiting.
When I think bulldogging types of racers, I think Carmichael, Villopoto, and Tomac. All ride great but have a riding style that maybe isn’t the most proper (“best”).
When I think graceful, smooth, efficient I think about Windham, Dungey, Sexton, and now Lawrence.
All of these bros are 4 stroke racers. I want to see some smooth, efficient, skilled 2-stroke racers.
100% agree. Didn’t meant that as a knock to bubbas technique. He was too talented to tell people to take notes from what he did. I couldn’t fathom the things he did on the bike sometime. However watching guys like MC Reed and Windham. That’s something you can show someone and be like that’s how your ride a dirt bike (within reason) lol
JMB
Those 3 won the majority of races and championships they participated in. Makes you question this “proper” technique thing. But Jett, Chase, etc make it work. Maybe the best technique is the one that works for the rider!
1 Mc, 2 Everts,3 Emig, 4 Huffman much better technique than JMB. 5 Bradshaw, 6 Larry Ward unbeatable in Bercy, 2nd to MC in 95 sx on a shoe string budget stock bike , beat Stew on a stock 250f with a pipe in his 18 th yr as a pro. 7 Alex Puzar a 250 champ but watch the last race of 95 125 series. That’s how you win a race when you hv to. Perfect form entering & cornering.
He said himself that he just let it hang out.
Form and technique? As in sweet skills?
I always thought Pourcel was just poetic. Also K-Dub, JMB, Hanny, Christian Craig et. al. though those are not all specifically 250 two stroke.
As you can see, there is no "agreed upon" but as the discussion continues, you will start to see some names more than others. Then just start searching YouChoob.
McGrath gets my vote.
I'd say Bayle .
Not sure if he was the best 2 stroke rider ever but when JS7 was chasing 4 strokes that was pretty good to watch.
Technically speaking I agree.
But if you watch RC riding a rough track, some of the downhills at Glen Helen stick in my mind, it certainly worked for him.
You can watch the bike swapping left and right and kicking horribly and Ricky just don't care... he just lets it come back to him and does it lap after lap at warp speed.
I appreciate from a text book / technical standpoint he wasn't perfect, especially in the current era and with the benefit of hindsight, but everyone is different and he always did what got the job done.
Also, Pichon was definitely impressive on that RM at the end and Windham is always a pleasure to watch.
