The brothers both brought g Flags on the podium when they first podiumed together, doesn’t bother me.
Deegan bringing a flag on the podium at Redbud because it was Fourth of July, doesn’t bother me.

What bothers me, is foreigners coming here to make a great living, and whining about how we act, when literally every country in the world acts the same way at a sporting event.

How dumb do you have to be to think that a kid talking shit on the podium is going to bring some kind of hatred towards two of the most popular riders because they’re Ozzys?

I don’t listen to Pulp, but I do listen to most of Steve’s other pods, and that rant he had during the Shougal review show was pathetic at best.

You would think that a country built by immegrants should have a better understanding on what Steve trying to say.

all non-us followers understod what he ment with it and english is not our native language, but it’s almost like 80% of the people in here trying to misunderstand what he said and ment.

and no, no other country in the world is as extreme when it comes to ”national pride” and bringing flags to their own national series.

but shunting usa when a no american rider goes on the podium is just a act of bad taste.

Enlighten me on what he is saying then, because in your eyes, i clearly missed his point.

If you don’t think other countries are as bad, I’d say you haven’t traveled much. But personally, I don’t see anything wrong with it.

I agree 100% with the last sentence, it’s disrespectful.

I have been in more or less every country in europe, rode enduro world championship rounds but still i have not been around much…

i have been at plenty MXGP’s, MXDN’s and speedway GP’s and seen the mutual respect for each rider. Patriotism in the rest of the world is nothing near what it is in the US, for good or bad..

The thing here is that typical redneck mentallity ”HE SHOULD NOT TELL US THAT WE CANT ROOT FOR OUR COUNTRY” instead of have some thought about how it CAN look and sound for people that comes from other countrys.

And i don’t know when the Deegan family got the saint stamp in here, but Brian has always been the one to start controversy where ever he went, just look at the Mulisha vs Pastrana crap that he did? Why do people think that he raises Haiden to do anything less?.

Go back to the claimgate thing, Haiden and his friends rode around on a golf cart shouting at Brennan, and now the Honda guys confirms that he does the same thing against Hunter.

Don’t come here with the ”he’s just 17” crap, Travis never did things like that at 17, neither did Jett or JS. It’s all about how you are raised.

Haiden has been raised with a camera pointed to his face his whole life, has better media training than any other of the guys out there. He knows EXACTLY what he is doing and starting whit this.

I could not care less about what country you come from, we have two Swedes out on the track now but i root way more for Jett than them, i just stick with the riders i like, not where the are from..

So for me it’s hard to understand why people shout ”usa” on the podium cermony since for me, it’s just riders, not nations…

I think Matthes was too far left on his take. Us American's are sick of hearing people sh*t on American's being patriotic, while also LIVING IN THE COUNTRY you are disrepecting. Since when did this become a thing? When was it a problem to root for your home country on the podium? Jett Lawrence was waving the Australian flag on the same podium 40 mins after Deegan and we didn't hear any problems with that. So clearly Matthes needs to get himself in check, because both incidents were the same thing. One was free speech, and the other was freedom of expression . Literally neither one was worse than the other, nor do American's care if you're waving your own country flag on our country's podium. We welcome riders from all around the globe to race here. That's why everyone wants to come to the US. To race against the best from all around the world.

No, they want to race where the money is. Big difference.

So the kid went out and waived and American flag, who cares and I am sure because of all this drama he is just going to be doing it when he wins. But I do say that in the MXGPs, they do play the national anthem for that riders country when they win, isn't that kinda throwing it at the other riders. But no one seems to care.

So the French waving their nation’s flag and cheering for the French racers on the side of a mountain during the Tour de France?  They’re rednecks?  I’ve only been on the side of the mountains of the Giro d’Italia.  The Italians with theirs flags didn’t come across as rednecks.

I think this is playing head games. Deegan doesnt need anymore fans he's got most of them. The lines at the Star trailer prove that. I'm not sure it would be my approach but I didn't think Deegan's should or could be in the Pro class this year either.

When you live by the sword you can die from it as well. I'm hoping for some great clean racing. So far its been a great season.

Not sure why people are caught up on the flag waving thing? That was only part of it. If that was all Haiden did, no one would care. It’s the words that go with it.

After reading these threads over the past couple days I’m realizing a lot of people already have their mind made up, and their side of the argument locked and loaded without really listening to, or remembering, what was said to begin with. Goes for both sides of this debate. Welp, we fucked!

The entire deegan family is proud they are Americans and are big time conservatives. This whole country is a laughing stock right now. The kid is proud and so what. If hunter wins and says he’s proud to put the Aussie on top and waves a flag who the fuck cares. He’s proud as he should be! Problem in todays society everyone is so scared to say or do anything. This country has turned into a big pile of pussies. They are trying to ban this and ban that and for God sakes if you have an American flag you’re a racist. Let everyone up there wave their flag,

OK, Let's review -

A. It is OK and great to support your country, your riders, and your flag and what it represents.

B. It is OK and great to disagree and have a different point of view or a different take on a subject.

C. It is NOT okay to slander, degrade, put down, label, or name call others to support your point of view.  When you do that, no one will EVER take your opinion seriously and you look like a child - not just on this message board, but in your life in the real world as well.

When you start calling other folks names, it shows you have already lost the debate, and everyone knows it.

Go Haiden Deegan and all the USA racers!

when did I name call anyone a name? You mean when I said this country has turned into a bunch of pussies? Like I said before,if Hunter did it I would have zero problem with it. They’re two racers on the top of their class and what’s alittle rivalry between one another. Back in the day, chicken and Bradshaw would basically tell each other that they were going to take them out and hurt the other guy! Those two hated each other. I agree with others on here saying what’s the big deal. I always told my kid if you want to play 3rd base, well then you need to put in the work and take it from the kid that’s playing it now. You need to earn it because nothing is ever given to you. Haiden worked hard and he was the best at washogal that weekend. Let him represent his country if he wants and let’s see who’s the best kid the following weekend.

It's really awesome that Lawrence's are here putting on a clinic for us, Steve's right, they are the embodiment of the American Dream. At the same time, the brothers are on top and the USA vs Australia thing was bound to come up in some form when someone stepped up to challenge them. I think the 1-2 punch of the 2 of them dominating US MX is what sets their situation apart from Roczen or Musquin.

I was skeptical of Deegans ability but you can't deny he's got it and his Washougal race was a good time on a bike. Personally I don't think Haiden needs to act like a walking youtube thumbnail.

The American dream should involve becoming an American.  Have the Lawrence’s naturalized?  Has Matthes?  Part of becoming an American requires allegiance.  Will the Lawrence’s or any foreign born-rider represent America at MXoN?

I can see Steves point of view on this . If you listen to some of the interviews with Bryan about how he built up the rivalry between he and TP . How it was all FAKE and just for publicity.  I could  see him doing the same thing with Hunter,Shimoda and Viallee being his main competitors . And it being an easy way to build a rivalry.  If not for what Bryan did with the Mulisha stuff , and there being so many riders from other Country's.  I would not think that what Haiden is doing was a big deal. I can see why Steve would think that this was where they were trying to go with things.

The USA thing at Red Budd seemed like it was just what it looked like.  An american happy to win on the 4th weekend. If it was just that then I would think Steve was overreacting. And if its not something they are doing to create a similar rivalry to what Bryan and TP had , then I think its great for them to be proud to be american. I just do not think that people should use being American as a way to divide people. In my opinion it goes against what I feel like America is. The United States . If he wants to  get some rivalry going then work another angle .  If he really is just proud to be an american then great.  I really do not know what they are trying to do. Maybe its more of an angle to get on the MXON team. In that case then go for it, great.  Knowing how smart Bryan is about promotion and getting publicity , I can see why Steve would worry that it was just some  Metal Mulisha stuff .

I finally made it though one of your entire posts, and happy I did. Reasonable stance. Look, no one is super butt hurt over what Deegan is doing, including Steve, and we get it’s not that bad, we just prefer how classier riders like James and Ricky handled the same situation.

I think Steve just doesn't want to see people dislike anybody just because they are not from the US. And I can agree with that.  I really do not think that Steve or anybody  would have a problem with  Deeghan just waving the flag and being patriotic. I think the problem people have with it is the potential that they are using the flag and being patriotic  as a way of putting another person down. And that to me is very unpatriotic and unclassy.  It might not be what they are trying to do. And I hope its not. There are plenty of other ways to create a good rivalry that are more classy. Haiden is fast enough that he doesn't need to do stuff like this to get attention.

I do like it when racers are more like Tomac and ride clean ,and can be friendly with other racers. I also liked how RV would talk a little trash. But not in a mean way. If Haiden wants to play the bad guy , I guess there are people who will eat it up. I think that the people who do not like what Haiden was doing are thinking  of the TP VS Mulisha stuff that went on, and see this as possible the beginning of something similar . And the people who think its great and not a big deal are not looking at with the hindsite of knowing about Bryan's  manufactured rivalry with him and TP. They are just looking at it as an isolated event , not potentially part of a bigger plan.

Those same people who are pumped up that Haiden loves his country , should be fired up if he is just using the flag as a prop to help build up a rivalry similar to the TP VS Mulisha.   I really hope that he's just trying to point out he is the fastest US rider in the 250 class , and trying to get on the MXON team.  And that he is Not just trying to build up some US against THEM sort of rivalry.

The people that are saying others are overreacting should listen to some of Bryans interviews  about how he built his brand up. I think its a logical conclusion to come to , or think is a possibility.  I think that right now, Haiden should be the 250 guy for the MXON. He  has impressed me with his ability to learn how to go faster , so fast.

Exactly, someone just spouting off, probably not knowing the history of the confederate flag.

I just made the comment to try and be funny, sometimes my humor gets lost in translation.

Reading up to page 4 now, I can clearly see a whole shitload of guys that apparently have never watched a single MXGP race.  Sweet Jesus.. Heaven forbid folks (fans and athletes alike) have fun without worrying about hurting feelings, let alone, a kid.

Back to my point, go watch an MXGP race.  Don't throw the international/national argument, it would not matter if it was any different, the fans and racers would behave the same, and it is 100% acceptable, and 100% rad.

Look, no one is super butt hurt over what Deegan...

You hit the nail on the head with Brian, have you listened to his interview with Gypsy tales? Basically telling everyone exactly what his intentions are. Also the Gypsy tales interview with TP where he says Brian was the real sellout. The metal militia was basically formed for that exact reason, for branding and to create a rivalry between them and TP.

Bryan did it with TP , made people dislike him for what I'm not really sure. But there were some intense fans on both sides.  And TP was pretty popular back then too. From a marketing point of view , it makes perfect sense . Place yourself as the rival to the most popular rider or riders. It's like the new kid who shows up and fights the biggest kid on the first day of school.

I'm not saying that is what the Deegan's are trying to do. But it is not crazy to think that could be what they are trying to do. Go listen to the Gypsy Tale's Bryan did for the first time. Listen to that and then I think You'll see why people are thinking that could be what they are doing  now.

Bryan is a very smart person when it comes to marketing. And I think it would be uninformed to NOT think that it was possible to be part of a bigger plan.

Yes I have listened to them. I think that most people might understand Steves concerns if they listened to it too.   If I had not heard  those interviews I too might have thought it was over reacting to say what Steve and others have said.  I would rather not have SX/MX turn into the WWE.

I don't have a problem with it as I've mentioned before a good bit of drama makes things interesting lol...but if anyone actually believes this is about patriotism rather than just shit stirring has got to be kidding themselves... And at the end of the day Hunters moving up to the 450's next year and Deegan won't have to worry about getting beat by the Aussies Cool
