Absolutely gutted for Eli and what happened. I was trying to think back if there’s ever been a racer go out with a ruptured Achilles in the past. Definitely not a common injury in motocross. Anyone know of a racer with that injury?

Yes, I think it's possible he was injured before last night.
It's a bad injury . I know alot of pro rugby players it ended there careers. I am sure Tomac could come back from it for SX next year. Question is will he want to . Gutted for him
Shaun Palmer, in his comeback to go to the Olympics for snowboarder cross, tore his achilles-this was after his mountain bike era, moto era, and kinda of his last dream. That achilles broke him, never fully recovered and went on a gnarly bender that had him end up in the middle of the desert on.....well, I think you get the point.
Tomac on the other hand, more stable of a person will recover from this and have a happy life-will he race Pro SX/MX? who knows, but, if he doesn't we all are lucky to have witnessed one of the top 5 greatest motocross riders of all time do his thing.

He will be fine. His response to it was pretty calm last night. If it was bound to happen I wish it would have happened next weekend at least.
Justin Rodbell tore his Achilles, I believe his right, in mid November 2022 and has not raced any SX this year. I’m not sure if he is back on the bike yet or not.
It's certainly doable to recover. I was walking in a boot 2 weeks post repair and regular shoe in 4 weeks. Moto is kind of unique in that you have your ankle encased in a boot so it doesn't have to be a career ender like basketball or football where it's a whole different story
I completely severed mine around 15 years ago, I was 6 months off the bike and 12 month off playing football⚽. To a top class athlete like ET with the best and most upto date medical tech available I don't think it's as bad as many of the vital medical experts are claiming. There's some fucking drama queens around here.
Add to that…
He’s a Tomac.
If anyone can pull it off…he…they…can.
The Old man (father), tore his Achilles, playing badminton. He never completely recovered from that injury. Stopped all sports after that injury. Just happy to walk.
I feel Eli is going to have some of the best doctors in Colorado fixing and guiding him through the recovery process. Alpinestars makes him a special boot and he could probably be back for SMX if it was a goal for him. His wife made a post on IG that he would be back even stronger……
8 weeks to 6 months is what I read for recovery...
don’t know why you got a downvote (this forum needs some cleaning) but you make a sound point. it only makes sense imo that the injury occurred prior. it could have been in yesterday’s practice, Eli will tell us later, but agreed, unlikely it happened all in that one moment. could have, but unusual.
It's a very bad injury . But of course he could make a comeback. Big question is if he wants to ?
My dad ruptured his Achilles while riding Endurocross in 2009. Forceful drop of the ankle and snap. He said it felt like getting kicked in the back of the ankle extremely hard. He had surgery to pull it down and re-attach it. Was out for awhile, I think he got back on the dual sport the same year, but waited for winter to pass before getting back on the gnar.
Within two weeks I crashed and shattered my knee cap and did some damage, so we spent some time together healing up!
Didn’t Vince Friese have an Achilles injury as well?
I'm so bummed for Eli Tomac and this has gotten me thinking, I'm a little concerned about this injury, but nobody I know has ever had this happen, even though it seems like it would be an injury we'd see a lot more of in riding Dirtbikes. I use Fastway evo pegs and love them, but they had another model called Fastway AIR EXT Footpegs which looked like they'd prevent your heel from hyperextending and tearing your Achilles tendon, but decided against, because they looked like a gimmick, now I'm starting to wonder about those again. Anyone have any experience with these pegs
^beat me to it! Been thinking about these for awhile, they make complete sense, especially for us vet dudes. Let's face it, how many of us are stretching our achilles, or for that matter, anything before we ride?
Pit Row
I hope someone on here has tried them, because as much as I like my Fastway Air Evolution pegs, I'm willing to make the change if it prevents one of these awful Achilles injuries. I might just say the Hell with it and give um a try. They get great reviews

I but Eli will heal up and start getting the itch to race after 4-6 months or so.
That's not how Achilles injuries work. You know as soon as they snap that you're hurt.
Yep, most people feel like some punched them in the calf
My neighbor was coaching football, tripped over something on the sideline, snapped his achilles and fell flat on his face with his ankle bent at a bizarre angle. It's no joke. Took him a while to recover.
It’s a gnarly injury but it will feel a lot better once it stops hurting.
These are true words: it will feel a lot better once it stops hurting.
When mine went it sounded like a small gun went off. The strange thing is it sounded like it wasn't coming from my body. I actually looked up ... to see where that sound came from. Then my foot gave out and I fell to the ground. I turned around and looked at my calf and could see the tendon moving inside my leg.
It does take awhile to heal.
Sure it is. You are either a bad Dr. or clueless to witch you opine. It's called a non contact injury when it's previous injured and becomes disabling later. You can be mobile with a partial tear. When it ruptures it's game over.
Vitards flame away but his slump weeks earlier makes more sense and could be explained by such an occurrence. Why did nobody on the team or Eli seem surprised? Devastated, disappointed, yes. Surprised not so much.
When i tore mine, the pet clinic I went to did not recommend a repair at the time, this was back in 2007, first ride back from an ACL repair, was the weirdest feeling ever. I had a lump in the back of my calf where it rolled up and they were telling me it was approx. 90% torn. I was back on the bike in around 10-12 weeks with a brace on my ankle for stability. To this day it is still kinda weird feeling, but I manage just fine.
I partially tore mine running, ended up in a boot for 3 months. Tore it again while doing physical therapy for it. Boot for another 3 months. I keep stretching it and it has been ok.
What were you doing when it tore during physical therapy? Jumping, running, heel raises…….
