Cross Jumping & Bad Attitude at Local Practice? Tell Me This is Still Uncommon.

So last week one of my favorite local tracks re-opened here in western Washington.  The conditions were a bit slick and I was pussy-footing around with my recently reconstructed knee on my mind.  About the 3rd moto of the day this other fella cross-jumped me and I went down.

My front brake lever snapped off in the air and my leg was pretty numb, so I cut the moto short.

After I fixed up my bike for the next moto, I found this guy and asked him why he did it.

He said "...you were going slow..." and basically had no justification or care for the situation, then he told me to get lost.  I was looking for an apology and perhaps some explanation of why it happened, like "I got cross-rutted" or "I lost traction and got shot left toward you".  I understand that shit happens and we all get squirrely at some time or another and I would be bummed, but not pissed off if that were the case.  The "I don't care, just walk away" attitude this fella gave me still has me pissed off.  I told him to steer clear of me in the future and went back to hang out with my friends.

Plenty of people told me they would have thrown down over this.  I'm curious what you guys think about this kind of riding, if anything like this has been done to you and how you would have handle the situation.

Yeah that’s pretty inexcusable. I wouldn’t have thrown hands, because it’s probably not worth it. But that guys a dick and I would have let him know.

He's an ass.  There is nothing you can say or do that will dissuade this douche nozzle from his bad behavior.  Take the high road and let it go.  You'll be happier in the long run if you don't let dickwads like this get to you. Guys like him are hellbent on being national practice champions. He's a loser and not worth your time.

I don't do social media (except an occasional Youtube vid), but I don't really want to blame a sponsor for the attitude of a local rider.  He did that all on his own.

Burnt Ridge MX.
It was also called Trulsen or Trulson MX when I first rode it in the late 1990's.

It's a really fun track that can be treacherous at times due to slick and/or hard clay.

I've had a lot of fun riding and racing there in the past.
It's the dream on a 125, but I'm certainly not the level of rider I was a few years ago.

The practice day hero is real. The cross jump may not have warranted a tune up but the attitude after sounds like it did.

Maybe the 80s and 90s were different.

You might get your ass kicked.

Yeah, that was total BS and there was no excuse for it.   I was at Mountain View this past weekend and saw something similar and the guy who crossed over was mad at everyone even though he caused the crash.  I like riding Oldtimers MX and or Vet practice because of that stuff.   I do wish the tracks would police their vet practice classes though because I keep seeing young kids in the class.

You missed the point. Let his sponsors know how he represents their products…

I'm over 40 and many of my buddies are 30+ to 60+ age range...
I see and hear about younger fellas poaching the Vet practice all the time.  They don't see the issue, but the mind of a young man works differently than the older crowd.  We're mostly all idiots when we're in our 20's.

I've had my ass kicked before, but it probably hurts worse in my 40's.
Still, I'd rather have my ass kicked by a 20-something punk than by the legal system over some "assault and battery" charges.

Society has changed in those decades and stepping over that line today can hurt a guy a lot worse than an ass-kicking.

I’m not going to say it’s common or uncommon, but I will say it’s becoming more common. For some reason some of the a holes think they own the track and everyone needs to move out of their way. Like slowing down for 25 seconds is going to ruin their day of practice. Impatient assholes…

Vet class practice, what's that?  Here in SoCal it's everyone for themselves.  Minis to 450s, beginners to Pros, 5 years old to 80, all on the track at the same time.  I'm 66 and have long lost my speed, but I still like to practice the track that's scheduled for the next Vet only races. So down here there's no choice but to keep one eye behind you and one in front.  And stay way clear of the race line if any fast guys are coming through or you WILL be "rubbed" if not deliberately ran over.

This is not a new thing, it's been the same for the past 10 years or more.  Local promotors and track owners simply don't want to hear the fast guys complain about waiting for us "slow guys" to finish putting around.  Nor do they want to make the effort to enforce any class/age rules.

A long time ago when I was passing people (instead of the other way around), I would always give the slower rider the "ride away" and if needed, go off the race line myself to pass.  I guess the new kids don't have any respect for older/slower guys these days.  Even the mini riders will run it in on you.

Just got to be super careful and pull off before a pack of these crazy guys get's behind you.  You'd think it was a National and everyone thinks they're the next RC or something.  Sad indeed.

I would have asked like you did.  I sure hope I would have had the restraint to walk away as you did but I don’t think I would have. That dude needs his ass beat if the move was on purpose.

That's what Crescent wrenches are for.Evil  Ask Rex Staten.

Seriously, I would have to find a turn to take him VERY wide on.  That looks like a track with unforgiving off track excursions.

Real fast guys just sweep out around you. Maybe he thought he had you cleared, but he didn't need that line and should have just stayed wide. I would have at least said I was sorry and offered you a drink or something. Good job not giving in to your emotions.

That was gnarly, I think the look-over and the body-english is a pretty good sign of what he was thinking.

It seems like your line in the corner was fine and you were trying to leave room, but clearly he didn't think you left enough.

Good on you man.  I'm a crusty old Marine, but I try real hard to clean it up around the kids.
There was this sign the track crew posted up at Washougal a few years back...

"Be the best you can be every day because there's a kid here watching and he wants to be just like you someday."

I'm sure It's not a direct quote, but you fellas get it.

That was straight dirty and I’d be hot. You were as far left as you could go. Kudos for your restraint because that’d been tough to do. If I was a track owner and saw that video that guy would never put a wheel on my track again.
