It's a traction control device used in the mud, planted by the Feld, to make the series more exciting.

I always kind of giggle when so much emphasis gets placed on traction control. On a motocross bike, the front and rear wheel travel the same speed so little, it would blow people's minds. A rear tire that can spin is a huge part of how we steer and manipulate the bikes. I had the opportunity to test a power management style setup a while back, based on how most OEMs have a production traction control...based on RPM spikes, except it was more invasive and interrupted more. It was completely awful to ride.
It's a start-based RPM gauge, KTM has used it on and off for years.
So basically a little digital LED tachometer? Is it getting a wireless signal from the spark plug? Like a wireless version of those trail tech computers.
Bobby Piazza should put one on his bike and charge by the rpm.

Its not that serious, just shows the RPMs can be done with a wire wrapped around the spark plug wire but I'm sure they are reading theirs direct from the ECU. They've probably done a ton of practice starts and found what RPM range hooks up/doesnt wheelie best. Okay Justin rev till you the light is at the 9 or whatever then hold it there.

You can't just measure the speed of the rear wheel. You gave to compare it to something. The front wheel is a great option (if imperfect). If the rear wheel is spinning faster than the front, there is a good chance that the back is spinning.
The rear wheel always spins faster. Imagine driving the bike slowly, with little throttle in first gear, with no spin.. The rpm's from the rear wheel will be faster than the rpm's from the front wheel. The front wheel is a greater diameter than the rear. In the same distance it will have less rpm's.
Very true, but easy for the CPU to factor in the diameter difference.
As mentioned - the difference (from tarmac applications) is that we are often sliding/spinning wheels on a dirt bike.
Potentially, a good system might make a powerful bike faster in a straight line, especially on sketchy surface*, but could make the bike horrible to ride, and slower everywhere else. Potentially good for the start straight.
* it could be altering the power much faster than a human could - eg retarding/advancing ignition many times a second.

Word on the streets is its an RPM monitor, he has to have one to monitor his engine speed since he’s been placed under “ track arrest “.
Basically it alerts the AMA and all the other teams when he gets outside the track boundaries and logs engine RPM, that way they can make sure he doesn’t accelerate and gain an advantage every time he goes off track.
or, it’s just a boring tachometer to help him launch at a predictable RPM, you decide…

Traction control works off of the engine RPM rate of change not wheel speed.
The only time you'll see wheel speed sensors on the rear wheel are when the teams are collecting data to understand wheel velocity at certain RPMs (also looking at gear selected, throttle % open, clutch use etc). The above data helps them develop the algorithm that is used for the traction control adjustments.

Seems like you have to know both to understand the change if you've lost traction or
clutch is slipping.
JGR was using these almost 10 years ago.
Interesting thought. That unit has power. Front wheel speed like on a bicycle only needs a magnet and sensor. No power necessary.
I see a lot of people on here disregard TC. You need that front wheel data in order to write a "real" TC calibration strategy tune. Yes, we know the front tire isn't always on the ground, but that will be factored in the calibration. The fact is, it has been done before, it resulted in net gains, and that's why the AMA banned front tire sensors.
Their ecu's may even have further imbedded telemetry data like G-load, altitude, pitch, roll, yaw. Couple that with front wheel data, 2 weeks of testing, and you could dial in masterpiece TC tune. (Ok, I'm just getting carried away here for fun. Haha)
However, I do predict production bikes will continue to evolve with these advancements. For example, a newbie will be able to set the roll axis limit so the bike will hold the perfect wheelie!
