If you tend to pinch tubes. Inflate a little apply baby powder to the tube, remove valve core and install

It's not that hard.

Put the bead in the valley on the opposite side, don't push the tool too far. It ain't hard.

Brick and mortar shops are struggling due to online sales.  They have to try to make money on the places where they know you can't go online (new bike setup fees, tire changes, etc).   They hate when people buy tires online cheap and then expect a hookup putting it on.  If you plan to be in moto any length of time, it's best to change your own tires.

This. ^^. I’ve be riding motor scooters for over 50 years and can count on my fingers how many times I’ve paid to have my tires changed and I think most of those would be at races by the Dunlop guy. I think my niehbor and me changed the first one on my MR50, then I learned how to force them on like a bicycle tire. Then one year at Ponca City Mouse McCoys dad Mike taught me how to use drop center when he caught me trying to mount a 5.10 on my YZ100 at the local motel I just bought at some rinky dink local Ponca street bike shop. I was so green I didn’t know I could probably have gotten one at the track or even what size to get. There’s no better feeling than changing your own piston, and mounting a new tire then going out and yanking a monster holie.

Easy peasy. Someone should post a video on you tube how to change a tire, that would be cool

I’m late to the party so flame away:

why the fuck are you paying someone to change your tire for what a set or 2 of tire irons and some baby powder would cost?

Jay got me convinced to start doing my own tires. Pinched my first tube, but getting better. I’ve started double tubing my stuff like Jay does too. Very helpful videos.

Love it... people in this thread complain about online retailers but I'm sure order on Amazon all the time.

For the guys saying buy the tire from the shop and have them mount, what if he is saving $40-50 on the tire, and only getting a $10 discount to mount? some people like saving $20-30 on simple things like this.

Now what's gonna happen? The shop will get $0 from here on out. Why? Invest in a tire stand and good tire irons. Change them yourself. It's incredibly easy, takes no time and you won't have an apprentice scratching your rim up.

Oh and my favorite thing. APPRENTICES! Defend the shops because apparently it's a crime to order online (to save money), meanwhile they have apprentices doing 80% of the dirty work on your bike to SAVE MONEY. Comical

Standard, I'm sure their labor rate was at least $100.00 a hour, you got charged less than a half hour.  Been working in dealerships for over 30 years. Buy the tire from the dealership and price would have been cheaper. You say you bought the bike there, why not the tire? Oh its cheaper on line. Not really.  Next time talk to your dealer, they will work with you on the price of tire and labor.  LOTS of dealers will not mount mailer order tires. When an If you have a issue with your mail order tire, guess what, you'll have to pay again to get it taken of the wheel to send back. Do you go to the grocery store an buy a steak and take it to the restaurant and ask them to cook it for you? Support your local dealer , you won't get the bad vibe YOU created.

Local dealers shouldn't mark up shit so much.  Tires are usually 30-40% more at dealers.  The whole charging $500+ to assemble the bike is a joke also.  I worked at a dealership at 14 and assembled all the new bikes. It's a one hour job for an idiot with no other skills.

JMC mounts the tire for free if you buy it from them.

If you can afford it and it supports your local shop I see it as a win win. Only time I touch a tire is to put a tube in if I get a flat at the track. I am lucky that my shop charges $20 and I’m happy to support his local business. Owning a small business in ca, I can promise you that shop isn’t over charging you at all.

I dont like changing tires but I do them and not because of the cost but for the time. My friend has a shop not even 5 minutes away.

It takes me 2 minutes to dissasemble the wheel and between 10 to15 minutes to changed a tire with a mousse depending how new the mousse is....

Even if my friend does it for free, I have to take the wheel, bring it to him, wait there more time than it takes me to changed it, put it again in the car and back home. .. I see no advantage in taking it to the shop given that I know how to do it.

What I mean is, those of you who do it for convenience, you are waiting your time.... There are a lot of tutorials in YouTube, just pay attention and you will realize that it is all about technique... The only messy part is lubing the mousse... And if you are doing it with tubes, there is not messy part.

With that said, I do not see expensive to pay 20€ that charges my friend, given spain where live cost of life is cheaper than in the states... for a shop to change my tire if I buy it there. My friend seems to not be getting rich charging those prices so it might be the right price so he can make an honest living

This seems to be one of those things being overlooked by the guys saying “just buy the tire at the shop”

If I can get the tire from RM or Motosport for $100 to my doorstep and the local shop charges $125 for that same tire, why wouldn’t I buy it online? Not only is the tire $25 more, but it’s going to take me an hour round trip of driving across town and back, plus the 5-10 minutes of buying process and that’s not including the time for them to change it if I decide to have them do it. That $25 difference in just the tire price quickly turns into much more when you factor in gas and time as well.

Umm, hanging out at the moto shop are some of my best memories.  You're doing it wrong haha!

Also your local shop can just drop ship a tire straight to you like the big online guys do if you don't want to drive there.

I agree. Hanging out in the shop created great memories when I was younger. Problem is here you don’t really get that experience anymore.

And ya, I can get the shop to drop ship the tire to me, but that tires is still going cost me more money from them.

If I ran a dealership, I’d to tires cheaper if they bought them in on the bike…use it as a loss leader and up-sell on anything else I can find wrong/worn/broken on their bike.

“hey…we noticed your brake pads, bearings, grips, levers, plastics, chain/sprockets, clutch, levers, spokes, rims, fork seals, whatever else I could find need to be replaced…while we’ve got it here we can take care of that for you for a 10% discount.  Want us to hook you up?”

And the guy replies “thanks, it’s ok I can replace the brake pads and bits myself.”

and you e made a loss.. brilliant business.

First, I didn’t say I’d do them at a loss…just cheaper if they brought them in on the bike than if they brought in the wheel…but even doing them at a small loss I wouldn’t sweat it…

and I’m sure some will decline any additional work…No doubt about that…some might do it themselves but buy the pads while they are there…some will buy the pads and have us install them.

Cant sell anything if you can’t get people in the door…if cheap tire changes get people in the door, all the better.  It increases the chances they’ll buy something else while they are here.

Costco sells their rotisserie chickens at a loss to get people on the store…true, not everyone that comes in buys anything else, and  true, they do lose money on those customers…but enough people come in buy a chicken and other things to make it worth their while to sell the chickens at a loss.  It’s the same proven business principal.

Your words : “I’d use it as a loss-leader”

Are you mis-understanding what ‘loss-leader’ means?

I just dropped $550 on suspension service. No valving,  no springs, just basic oil and seals along with shock service. I am kind of errked but I guess that's the going retail rate.

I haven’t worked at a shop since 2012 or so but it at the time the standard was usually buy the tire from the shop and they’ll mount for free. Seemed to work about the same money wise for the customer and the shops got to sell tires and do other maintenance if necessary.

If you don’t like the tire shops tire price, then don’t use them. Buy tires online and change yourself.

but you can’t buy a tire online and complain of the tire shops rate to put it on for you. Because if your initiative is to “save $20-$30” then why are you paying a shop to install, cost extra money doesn’t it? That makes zero sense as this guy did lmao.

Fork seals, oil, and bushings are super easy (Almost as easy as tire changes) and you don’t have to invest very much in tools. Great skill to have and you don’t have to wait around on someone to do it for you. I’d love to get my own nitrogen tank, I’ve done everything on a shock except charge it with nitrogen.

When my oldest was a pup, I was teaching him profanity while changing a tire.  He's just quiet until he pops off "it looks like you need three arms."

You guys act like the only time you leave the house would be to get a tire changed.  Maybe you are out running other errands and getting things done and swing by then.  No lost time with a little prep.

I've never paid a shop to install a tire. My point is the guy is giving money to both online retailers AND his local shop. He could just not give any money to his local shop like I recommended and do it himself. People like to save money, as proven with local shops getting first term apprentices to do your rebuilds on $12k bike... lol

I'm an advocate of not letting others touch your bike. Do all work yourself. Because shops don't give 2 fucks about your belongings.
