Have you ever developed cracks around your nipples?

Spoke nipples that is. Noticed these today at the track. About 160 hours. Looks like an exploding wheel ready to happen. 3222255F-59DA-4EB8-8F31-04FF50BF8FCB

160 seems to be enough, especially if you are moderately fast. I would expect wheel bearings to have been replaced at least once by now too.

Definitely wouldn't ride on those again. Looks like time for new rims and spokes

Maybe a defect rim, or just worn out.

Only time that has happened for me on newer rims has been when holes turned out to no be drilled with correct angle.

That looks like crazing. This can happen to anodized aluminum from mechanical stress. I seriously doubt those “cracks” are any deeper than the anodized layer and I seriously doubt that wheel is at risk of exploding. At 160 hours those wheels have been through some serious stress from flexing. One of the many reasons to keep spokes properly torqued.

Wendy O Williams had this problem figured out back in the 70s. A little electrical tape on the nipples will prevent the cracking.

Is that your expert analysis? I know the difference between crazing and cracks. These are definitely cracks. There is separation and lift of the aluminum and can feel them with my nail. Some are quite bad. Rim is coming apart everywhere. Very apparent in person. Spokes have always been properly tightened.

Scratch them with a scribe or something to see how deep they go, they're likely toast anyways

Full depth cracks. Toast. New wheel already on the way.

It's crazy the rims are cracked, but there is hardly any tire scrub.

looks like a front. A lot less scrub happens up there.

I'm impressed you got 160 hours on a wheel set. I don't think I get more than 50 before they lose their shape lol

Cracked nipples and a rimjob. Thread seems borderline NSFW.

Time for new rims

i had a rear that had similar cracks, plus a good crack at the weld joint. Swapped out the rim and spokes, hung the old stuff on a hook in the shop. About a year later, I heard a noise from the shop, went out and found the rim had broken at the seam and jumped off the wall! About a 3 inch gap where the weld had been. I think rims are under a lot more stress than we think..

Some people use band-aids or tape to prevent nipple cracking I believe. Laughing

Seriously those rims are shot. Any chance the spokes were over-tightened causing added stress?  I've never threaded a rim before but I always watched my Dad do it and it was damn near surgical how meticulous you have to be going around adjusting those things to be just right and balanced.

Did you properly lube your nipples when you inserted them? Is so what lube did you use?

How tight do you torque the nipples to? I think the Yamaha manual specs ~25 in/lbs, which is a lot less than people think they need.

Yeah I know, first thought would be overtightened spokes, but they’re not. I’ve actually never seen a wheel cracked in that area before in all my years. Pretty crazy. I did have a couple really hard flat landings last week. My theory is they are just old and fatigued and that did them in. To be fair, the back wheel is pretty octagon. 🤣 Having a front wheel grenade on landing would be terrifying. That’s how Ross Maeda from Enzo got paralyzed. Bad deal.

I've seen nice nipples around my crack. Does that count?

Wendy 'O for the win here, I personally got a facefull of her nipple in the mosh pit at a Plasmatics show Boulder theatre 1980? Not one crack to be found, Richie Stotts the guitar player wore a mini skirt and a blue mohawk now thats a crackpot.
